what i do is take the image i want to cut, and post it twice into imgur. then i look at the measurements of it. depending on whether you want to cut it vertically or horizontally, you have to look at either the width or the height. then divide whatever the measurement is by two. if, for example, your width is 400, dividing it by two would give you 200. then i go to "advanced" and click "crop." now, i type in 200 in the width box at the top. that'll give me the exact shape of it. just move it to the left or right side of the image, and voila. now do the same with the other image you posted earlier (remember, you posted two of the same image), but make sure you're cropping the opposite side this time. you can do the same thing with the height measurement, not just width.

and when you're done, take the two images and align them over top of or beside each other. i think you know how to do that part. <3

it's an overlay. the border part is basically an image and you overlay it on top of the avatar picture.

welcome to the (revised) white border avatar tutorial!
how to do it online for people like 2015 me

before we start make sure you have your 100x100 image and this template saved to your computer! also, open up either lunapic {link} or online image editor {link}, i'll be showing how to do it on both lunapic and online-image-editor, so either is fine.

we'll start off with lunapic first since,, it's the original right?
i'll be using this 100x100 for the tutorial!

o1. upload your 100x100 to lunapic! click the button that reads browse or you can upload an image from the url, at the bottom!

you'll get something that looks like this:
      Image

o2. hover over "edit" at the top, and click "paste from clipboard"

      which is right here:
      Image

o3. you'll get to a page that looks like this. when you're here, click "choose file" and find the template from before. {this one!} and upload it!

      Image

this page will come up, just click "continue on to paste this image"
      Image

o4. drag the overlay on top of your 100x100 and click "apply"! make sure it's centered!

      Image

o5. upload to an image hosting site like imgur and enjoy!

next is online-image-editor!
same as lunapic, you'll need your 100x100 and the white border template! i'll be using this 100x100 for this tutorial!

o1. upload your image to online-image-editor! use the default "upload" or the "from url"

you'll get a page that looks like this:
      Image

o2. now, go to the "wizards" tab and click "overlay image"

      Image

o3. upload the white border overlay.

on the left of the page, after you've clicked "overlay image", there will be something like this:
      Image
click "choose file" and find your white border

o4. the overlay will appear in the top left corner of the canvas! (the grid thing) drag it over on top of your 100x100 and click apply.

      Image

also a thing to remember! for some stupid reason, oie shifts the overlay right one pixel so try to lean the white border to the left.

o5. now, save your finished avatar to an image hosting site and enjoy!

here are the finished products :
Image...and...Image

i hope this tutorial helped you out!

even if these avatars aren't really trending right now whatever

The method shown above is the only one I know of, but it is compatible with GIFs. You would use the same method as with still images (for OIE, that is; I have never used the other program). May I ask in what way it is not working for you?
