Prologue
The Girl Who Conquered Darkness
A heavy blizzard blew across the small village of Charlottetown, Prince Edward Island. Through the heavy snow, a single majestic bird glided, its wing tips alight with small flames to guide the way. It was an old bird, the red and gold feathers faded and worn. His beak was scarred and a crack ran down one side. His old eyes searched through the blinding white skies for some sort of sign where he could escape the cold talons of death. In his withered talons, the phoenix carried a small bundle wrapped in warm blankets. He narrowed his eyes and snow pelted his feathers and melted, sending small drops of water down to earth. He tucked the bundle closer to his warm belly to keep it from freezing. He searched through the thickening clouds and snow, but all seemed lost in the blizzard’s raging winds.
Suddenly, bright green sparks burst into life a few feet from his beak. He looked down and saw a bright flash of green and he leaned forwards, dropping into a dive. The cruel wind clawed at his feathers and made his eyes water but he refused to pull up. The cold turned into heat as he warmed his body and he gripped the bundle in his beak as the earth became more and more visible. He tensed his body and landed, stumbling slightly.
An old woman stood before him. Her silver hair was shaped to resemble wolf ears and her piercing green gaze scanned him. She wore a dark blue robe with silver cuffs, rim and collar, which were studded with black stars. She held a silver birch staff in her hand, which had a black star on the top of it.
“Professor Blare,” She greeted him with a nod, “Everything went well I presume? No trouble on the way?” She asked, her intense stare not leaving the phoenix’s face.
The bird nodded. “My work here is done.” He murmured. His feathers steamed before bursting into flames. A tall dark figure rose from the blaze and a long arm swept the flames away and they vanished into thin air.
A tall old man stood where the phoenix had once been, his chalk white hair on end like the bird’s head feathers. He wore a bright yellow robe with a dark purple four-pointed star in the middle with red cuffs, rim and collar studded with the same black stars.
He cradled the small package in one arm, his eyes on the woman. “Everything went according to plan, Professor Nocturne. The child is safe from harm.” He told her, indicating the blankets.
Professor Nocturne nodded, breathing a sigh of relief and her breath escaping her in a small cloud.
Blare frowned and his eyes darkened. “But where will she live? She has no family.” He pointed out, raising an eyebrow. The child would have no place to stay, she couldn’t stay outdoors all her life! What would become of her?
Nocturne grinned. “I planned ahead in case you asked. She will live with her godfather, Lee Crishwall. He will take good care of her.” She waved the question away as if she had known that this would happen since the child’s birth. She pointed with a hand half-hidden by her robes at a small dingy house that was completely unnoticeable and unmemorable.
Blare nodded and the two walked up to the house. Blare kneeled down at the front steps and placed the small girl on the doormat and placed a letter in her small hand.
The girl had scarlet hair, which grew in short curls. She was slightly dark in the skin and there was a something odd where her heart was.
Nocturne raised an eyebrow and moved the blanket to reveal what was hidden beneath it. She gasped in horror and Blare did too, for where her heart was her skin had been cleared to show her heart beating. It was a Posessor’s heart, just like the shape.
Blare took Nocturne by the arm. “We should wish her goodbye and then go before the humans wonder what’s going on.” He whispered, looking at the dark windows of other houses. He saw a light flicker on in one.
Nocturne nodded and kneeled down. “Stay safe, Nancy Winsk.” She wished, smiling at the small child. Blare smiled and walked over. “Same wishes from me, we will meet again later.” He promised her and then walked away with Professor Nocturne. He stood a little ways away from the house and snapped his fingers twice.
The doorbell rang and a light switched on. A man opened the door. He looked down and picked up the girl. He looked to see who had placed the child here but Blare and Nocturne had vanished into thin air. He closed the door, girl in hand and the light remained on, all through the night.
