Hardly anything could be heard over the sound of cats yowling and the crashing of thunder that the storm bought.
Sedgepaw strained to see around the corner of the den to find out what was going on in the camp, but she couldn’t see around the corner of the den.
She sighed and pulled her head back in. she could hear the sound of pawstep’s, thundering through the camp in all directions. Many cats were running around, not really helping at all. She heard one cat say:
“Calm down, it’s on FeatherClan territory!”
“But it can spread!” another cat called.
“I don’t think so. The swamp is too wet,” said the first voice.
The conversation broke off as cats continued yowling and running around like spooked rabbits. Sedgepaw could hear cats trying to calm down their clanmates, but not much could be heard over the sound of cats yowling, and the thunder that followed after another crash of lightning.
Finally, cats seemed to quiet down. She could hear Willowstars voice call to all of them.
“FallowClan!” she yowled. “We must remain calm. Panicking won’t help. I will send a patrol out to check on the fire, and the FeatherClan, to see if they are in trouble, or need help.” there was a pause in her voice. “I will lead it, and I would like Kinkjaw, Ashgaze, Mistclaw, and Daisyfur to go with me.”
Sedgepaw heard a few pawstep’s padding around. Probably the cats who had been called.
The pawstep’s of the six cats faded away, and the only sounds to be heard was thunder and rain.
Sedgepaw sighed and laid her head down on her paws. She wished she could be out there, with her littermates. But apparently, she couldn’t even leave her nest for the next quarter moon.
She turned back to the stone. Something wasn’t right. How could it have just wound up Kitefall's wound? She was sure there hadn’t been any other stones just lying on the floor, waiting for some cat to fall on it. And why did a loud boom go off at the exact moment Kitefall fell to the ground? And why was there a stone wedged in a tree? Something just didn’t add up.
The turned the stone over in her paws, shuffling it across the den floor. Then suddenly, it clicked. As if the final piece of the puzzle slid itself into place, and revealed the big picture.
Sedgepaw widened her eyes.
The creature! The creature the twoleg was holding. It spit’s out the stones, aiming for something. That’s why there was deer blood splattered on the tree trunk. A stone must have caught the deer. Maybe the creature made a mistake and the stone wound itself in a tree.
That’s the twolegs way to hunt! Sedgepaw drawed back a little as everything came into place. The twoleg hunts deer with the help of the creature. Kitefall was too small to be good prey, so the twoleg just left him. It’s the creature who was making the loud booms, and noises! Because the twoleg is hunting!
Sedgepaw sat bolt upright as the realization came to her. She needed to find some way to kill that creature. To save the clans.
Suddenly, a plan flicked into her mind. It was tough, hard to pull off, but if she could do it, the clans would be safe. But how will she do it alone? As if to answer that question, she heard pawsteps padding inside the medicine den. She heard the cats shake their fur out before turning the corner. The faces of Smallpaw and Applecloud revealed, and Sedgepaw smiled at them.
“Are you ok?” Smallpaw’s worried voice shook with each word.
Sedgepaw nodded.” I’m fine, but I have something really important to tell you.
Applecloud and Smallpaw leaned in as Sedgepaw told the two about her discovery, and the plan. With each sentence, their eyes got wider and wider. Finally, Sedgepaw stopped talking and stared at the two she-cats.
“I can’t believe it.” Applecloud muttered. Sedgepaw stared into her eyes, and saw shock replaced by determination.
“We’ll do it.” she said. Smallpaw nodded too.
Sedgepaw smiled. “Thanks,” she said.
“I’m going to get Mallowpaw.” she said. Applecloud nodded. “I’ll get Ashgaze.” the two turned to leave, but Sedgepaw called them back.
“What about Owlpaw?” she asked.
Smallpaw exchanged a glance with Applecloud. “He’s gone.” she finally said. “We can;t find him anywhere.
Sedgepaw dropped her eyes. I know where he is. Her thought’s roamed back to the night’s she had crept out and watched Rabbitpaw and Owlpaw together.
“Then forget him,” Sedgepaw growled, with a little more hostility in her voice than she had meant.
Smallpaw looked taken aback at Sedgepaw’s sudden harsh words, but nodded and left without a reply.
Silence filled the medicine den once for.
Sedgepaw listened, her ears pricked, but didn’t hear anything signaling the four cats left camp.
For what seemed like moons, Sedgepaw waited and waited. She knew not much time had passed, and her clanmates were probably still padding through the swamp, but she was restless. Nothing to occupy her.
Then suddenly, Sedgepaw made up her mind. She stood up, slowly, not applying pressure to her injured leg. She didn’t care that the medicine cat had said to sit still and lay down. She couldn’t just leave her friends to fight by themselves while she just laid there.
Sedgepaw padded out of the medicine den, trying to ignore the sharp, stabbing pain in her hind leg.
She needed to go after her clanmates.
