The library was bigger than Harper remembered. Perhaps it was because she was used to the quiet business that made the library home before, the movement of people, even if she tuned them out. It was eerie now, being in a nearly untouched library when the outside world was so damaged. It was almost like she could forget what was going on outside, like she could get lost in a good book... just like before.
But nothing was like before. She was reminded of that daily as she looked out of the second story window, looking at the ravaged streets below, observing some passing strangers. Or the undead. She was glad she at least had her books, but she was so caught up in her own safety that even the familiar characters on the pages could give her little comfort. She was too alone. Despite being an introvert, she wasn't used to being completely alone. Others would almost always be around her, and almost always be talking softly at one of the tables. She almost always had the passing smiles of friendly people who recognized her. And Harper missed the gentle librarian, and her kind smile. It was her that got Harper into reading in the first place, convincing her after she returned a book for a school project that she should pick up a fictional series. Where the librarian was now, she didn't know. Hopefully she was ok, but Harper had the feeling she didn't make it very far into this apocalypse.
Her thoughts were elsewhere, which was the worst place they could have been, as she searched outside for some supplies. Or some food. She got careless, and didn't hear the approaching footsteps until it was too late, an arm grabbing her from behind and capturing her.
"Don't move," a hoarse voice. Definitely a man. "If you give me that nice bow on your back, I will leave peacefully. Or I'll have to take it by force. You take your pick." His breath reeked of blood. It nearly made Harper gag, but she focused, steeling herself and letting her mind filter through all the self-defense training she had gone through. Or rather, the self-defense training she had read about.
As Harper was about to turn and bring the palm of her hand against the stranger's face, another younger voice sounded a short distance away, causing Harper to jump. "I wouldn't do that if I were you," he said calmly, just out of Harper's view. Was he talking to her, or the man holding her? She couldn't tell. Either way, she abandoned her plan of bashing this bad breath man's face. If he was talking to her, she was outnumbered. She knew better than to try fighting two people. One was already pushing it.
"What, are you going to stop me?" She could hear the bad breath man's sneer as he talked. At least the newcomer wasn't talking to her. That made things a bit easier.
A strange sound, something flying through the air, hitting a nearby tree with a soft thud. Harper watched as a very large rock dented the side of the tree trunk. "Well, yes, I had planned on stopping you. I'm not afraid of picking fights."
The bad breath man practically growled as his grip loosened on Harper. "Fine. I'll leave. Don't think I won't be back, and I'll bring some of my buddies so we can have a fair fight." One more sneer, and the older man turned his back and disappeared into the forest. Harper released air, not realizing she had been holding her breath.
"Thanks," she said, rubbing her neck and checking to make sure her bow was still securely on her back. "I'm glad you didn't throw those rocks though," she added, raising one eyebrow as she looked at the small handful the stranger had in his hands.
The stranger laughed, letting the rocks fall to the ground. "Me too, to be honest. I was probably going to miss him and hit you accidentally." He took a brief pause, appraising Harper with stunning eyes. One was brown, the other blue; unique. They mesmerized Harper for a few seconds, before she realized he was talking again. "I'm Uriah, by the way. Been travelling a while, hoping to find someone I know but... no hope now." He shrugged, gaining a far off look in his eyes before he smiled again. Harper liked the way it made his eyes crinkle. A true smile. "But I am glad I found you! Someone who isn't dead, or crazy like that guy that had you."
"I don't know about sane," Harper said, making herself look away from his eyes. She didn't want to get lost in them forever. "But I'm definitely not dead, if that helps?" The two near-strangers shared a quick laugh before Harper realized she hadn't introduced herself. "Harper, by the way." An internal battle raged inside of Harper, deciding if she should tell him that she lived nearby. In the end, loneliness won. "I made a home in an abandoned library. Maybe you want to rest there for a few days?" Or forever.
Uriah smiled again, his eyes crinkling even more. "That sound lovely."

As the pair walked back, sharing their experience in the apocalypse so far, another new face greeted them once they reached the library. The most beautiful cat Harper had ever seen - though she thought all cats were beautiful, this one took the cake. Sleek, her fur still smooth despite the chaos of the world, her eyes glowing in the sunlight. Breathtaking, almost like Uriah's eyes. Harper half expected the cat to run away when the humans reached the building, but instead she meowed, rubbing against Harper's legs and staring expectantly at the door.
"Is she... yours?" Uriah asked uncertainly, looking from Harper's surprised face back down to the cat. Slowly, Harper shook her head, leaning down to give the cat a pat before she realized who it was.
"Oh!" Harper exclaimed, scratching the cat behind the ears. "She isn't mine, but she came to this library a lot. I remember seeing her around, but too many people were always petting her for me to even think about getting close. She was the librarian's cat... she called her Topaz."
"Well, I guess you're gaining two new patrons for your library this evening," Uriah laughed, as Topaz moved to rub against his legs and meow again.
It had certainly been an eventful day.
