███ Heath chewed the mouthful of beans he had just scooped into his mouth. The popping of the fire gave him comfortable ambiance in the darkness of night in the desert. His bandana that usually covered his nose and mouth was bunched around his throat, allowing him to shovel spoonfuls of food down his throat. The little boy beside him mimicked his every move. However, the younger one finished first and he tossed the aluminum can at the fire. Heath kicked it away, and swatted his brother’s hand. “Hey!” He grunted, mouth still stuffed with beans “Don’ do that, Isaac, you know what it’ll do. I don’ want you gettin’ burned when you clean out the ashes tomorrow.” Isaac wiped his mouth with his sleeve and bowed his head. “Sorry,” He murmured “I thought we had enough water cans.” Heath chuckled, standing up and closing his can, tucking it into his pack. “Boy, out here, there ain’t no such thing as too much water.” The man shoved his hand into the sack and pulled out his blanket, dragging it over to the collection of fallen logs he had previously been sitting on. Isaac also unpacked his, and the brothers wrapped themselves in them, resting their heads on their packs. Heath heaved a sigh and rolled on his side. “G’night Isaac.” He yawned. But the boy did not share his exhaustion. Instead, the twelve year old stayed awake, looking up at the sky. “Hey Heath?” He whispered, earning a grunt from his brother. “D’ya think mom and dad are up there?” His eyes were glued to the bright pinpricks of white that dotted the darkness sprawling out above them. Heath remained with his back to his brother. “How many times do I have to tell ya?” He grumbled “When we die we don’ become the stars.” Isaac was persistent. “You know that’s not what I mean.” He countered, even more hushed. Heath rolled onto his back with another sigh, folding his hands on his large chest and moving his eyes to the stars. “Do I think they’re watchin’ us?” He asked, more to himself than to Isaac (even though he gave a little nod). Heath considered for a moment. “Yea, I guess. I mean, if they can I’m sure they do. Life’s different now. We ain’t on the ranch any more. I’d like to think they help us in any way hey can.” This answer seemed to satisfy the young boy, since he smiled up at the sky. “Now go to sleep. We have a long way to travel tomorrow.” Isaac obeyed, and he rolled himself over, quickly falling into the rhythmic cycle of sleep. Heath, however, was thinking about the past. What had led up to this point. And what would follow. His head turned and worked, but he still felt unsatisfied. The fire was only dying embers when he finally closed his eyes and drifted into sleep.

It was hot. Like, really hot. And Isaac wouldn’t let Heath forget it. “I swear,” Heath grumbled “If I hear those words outa your mouth one more time, I will use you instead of this stick.” The object in question was wrapped in a blanket, being pushed along the ground trying to make a safe track through the minefield they were crossing. Isaac swallowed. Heath sighed and tilted his head back, pushing the stick slowly forward to test the next few feet. “There’s more water in my bag.” He stopped and kneeled down carefully, allowing his brother to unzip the top and feel around for the canister. The feint clinking of cans was drowned buy a loud, choking gurgle. Heath grabbed Isaac’s hand and rose slowly to his feet, wrapping his brother in his arms for protection. The man’s eyes surveyed from under his cowboy hat and scanned the surrounding hills. A figure stumbled over the mound a few hundred feet away. Without having to look too hard, Heath could tell exactly what it was. Another individual appeared behind the first. Then another, and then another. Soon, there had to be at least ten undead monsters dragging themselves towards them. They were fast, and they were gaining ground quickly. Heath hastily swept more dust aside to make a path. 150 feet. More dust. 100 feet. More dust. 50 feet. More dust. Soon, they were incredibly close, and Heath decided to do something insane. “Ok, bud. Hold on tight.” He called to Isaac, and grabbed his wrist. Heath took a deep breath and started to sprint. They zigzagged through the field, not really caring where they stepped. Suddenly, Isaac tripped and the two tumbled a few steps. It wasn’t long until Heath’s brother let out a shriek. Heath peeked over his shoulder and saw a rotting hand gripping the boy’s ankle. Thinking hastily, Heath threw his bag, filled with metal and solid amenities. It hit the monster square in the face, allowing Heath to rip his brother from the beast and continue. Zombies were spilling into the valley now, more than Heath had ever seen, and they were closing in. it wouldn’t be long until they were fully encircled. The man was caught off guard by Isaac standing still. He turned and looked at him with wild eyes. Isaac just gave a small, sweet smile and looked down at his feet. There was a blinking red dot. Isaac was standing on an armed land mine and as soon as he stepped off, they would both be blown to bits. “Go on. You have to get out of here.” Isaac urged, pushing his brother forward. “You’re kiddin’ me!” Heath hissed “There’s no way I’m leavin’ you! I can’t let you die!” Isaac growled. “I’ll die, but I’ll take these idiots with me! Heath, please!” He couldn’t get out a response. Isaac pushed him a final time and one of the walkers jerked him off of the mine, setting it off. Heath grabbed the bandana around Isaac’s neck and was blown back, tumbling down the hill and into a ditch.

A soothing, wet motion along Heath’s cheek pulled him out of his sleep. But the soothing feeling lasted only for a split second. It was quickly replaced with burning, boiling pain. Heath let out a cry into the sand he was face-down in. He scrambled into a sitting position and clasped a hand to his face, which only caused more pain. He opened his eyes, but only one seemed to open. He tried with all his might to open his right eye, but it wouldn’t budge. He patted down his chest and took out the reflective metal necklace he always wore. Horror and disbelief stilled his heart. Half of his face was horribly scarred and burned, no skin left visible. The right eye was in fact open, but it was milky and blind. He swallowed and lowered the object, coping with what he had just seen. Heath raised his head and looked behind him. Isaac. He stumbled to his feet and climbed the hill as fast as he could. Once he got to the top, his breath was snatched from his chest. There was a large char mark spanning across the entire field. Nothing had survived. Heath brought his hand to his mouth. He realized that Isaac’s bandana was still clutched in his hand. Hot tears scorched his cheek and he collapsed to his knees. After a few moments, he felt something nudge him. The man jumped and fell down the hill. He got on all fours and looked up to see a happy, golden face in front of him. The dog licked Heath’s exposed forehead (his cowboy hat had fallen off during his tumble) and wagged his tail happily. Heath sat back and eyed the dog. The golden-furred canine looked healthy. He had heard stories about dogs who had been infected by the virus, but by the disposition of this guy, he seemed fine. The dog pushed his head into Heath’s chest. Heath let out a grunt and wrapped his arms around the dog’s body. The dog sat down, crushing Heath beneath his weight. “Okay, boy” He wheezed “c’mon lemme go.” He patted the dog gently and he moved, allowing Heath to get up. The man picked up his hat and pulled up the bandana over his nose, wincing slightly at the pain caused by his wound. He’d definitely have to use the medicine in his pocket. But for now, he needed to keep moving. Zombies moved in herds and there would no doubt be more of them. He looked at the dog and the dog looked at him. “Well, ya comin’?” Heath asked. The dog happily trotted over to him, tongue lolling and tail wagging. Heath got down on one knee and tied Isaac’s bandana around his new companion’s neck. “You and I are gunna be buds, okay? But you’ll need a name.” The man tilted his head in consideration, and the dog copied. A pang of sadness flowed through him, but Heath smiled. “How about Isaac?” The dog barked, showing his approval, and the pair started to walk. After a while of traveling, they came across a sign. Heath used the sleeve of his jacket to brush off the dirt collected on the plank of wood. “Valle Muerto.” He whispered, reading the words. Isaac barked and Heath turned his attention to a figure in the distance. “C’mon” He beckoned, and he and Isaac jogged along the trail that continued through the valley. There were mountains on either side of them, but there was a fair amount of flat space. The closer they got, the more confused Heath became. The eventually slowed, coming to the opening of...a town? “What’s this?” Heath murmured. He and Isaac made eye contact and he shrugged. Might as well check it out.
