Hector and Tatius had both been sitting uncomfortably at the edges of the cadets' den, exchanging a few grumbles and complaints as Disa and her pups, as well as Aedus, squirmed around in the center. Luminita had cleared up out the nursery to prepare for both Saskia's and Lapis' births, and that meant that the current pups that occupied the nursery had to be temporarily moved to the cadet's den. Tatius had protested at first, though the cadet's den had been the emptiest, after all. Only Tatius and Hector shared the den, and mainly only had to come in when night fell, but they had both been too uncomfortably crammed in their own den to be able to rest.

Around half of Disa's puppies had gone off to sleep, but Tatius was able to make out the figures of Neci, Maipe and Adair spinning around, trying to get ahold of their tails. Aedus was watching in the smallest amount of content, and Tatius has assumed that he had felt too old to engage in their playing. Aedus was going to end up in the cadet's den next moon, anyhow. Next moon! The thought trickled into Tatius' head, resulting in a breath of fear. Next moon, both Hector and Tatius would take their assessments to become combatants. They two may finally leave the cadet's den, but only if they don't horribly mess up their assessments. Tatius couldn't help but tremble anxiously for a moment, leaving him in a frown. Hector had glanced over at Tatius with a curious gaze.

"How come you're so clearly scared all of a sudden? Disa's pups aren't scaring you, are they?" Hector teased in a soft voice, and Tatius shook his head curtly. Hector yawned wearily, but shrugged. "What is it, then?"

"I -- it's our assessments. To becoming combatants! Next moon! You can't tell me that isn't a good reason to be terrified. It's another thing that's going to keep me up at night, which is exactly what I need, as you can tell." Tatius huffed, shifting his paws anxiously. He took a fleeting glance towards Hector, long enough to notice his smothered smile. "Oh, you can't tell me you aren't worried either! We either make a complete fool of ourselves or be able to finally serve the Malakit as full grown combatants!"

"I mean, I suppose I'm more excited than scared. In fact, you worry too much, Tatius. It likely won't get you too far if you keep on sticking your nose in the future, and in fact, I was just able to go to sleep before you made that weird face, and now I have to keep on hearing your rambles." Hector mockingly mimicked Tatius' huff, and continued. "Did you ever not worry? It's pretty tough to think of you as a carefree pup, actually. Ever since we joined, I kept on hearing your nervous and jittery thoughts, which doesn't take a good toll on me either. So spew all the thoughts you have if you want, but I don't want to listen to them longer." Hector snapped, and Tatius whimpered immediately afterwards.

"Hector! I don't mean it that way, I just --" Tatius cut himself off, and sighed. "I'm going to sleep." He made his way through Disa's pups, which all had fallen asleep by now, and onto the opposite side of the room, inching his way down to the shady corner.

Maybe he's right. Maybe I do worry too much. Tatius pondered sorrowfully. Maybe... maybe I should stop sticking my nose into the future, like he said. It doesn't help me in the long run. Does it? Tatius took a melancholic glimpse over Hector's direction. He had already curled up and began sleeping, the moonlight palely shining onto his fur. A wave of confusion began to sweep over him, squinting at the soft glow the moon has let off over the den. Moments before then, Hector and Tatius were absolutely fine buddies, but what had made him lash out? What did he do so terribly wrong? Tatius curled up like Hector had, and sighed. I'll prove him wrong ... one day.

The kennel shivered as they all sat on the frozen abandoned railroad tracks. Garland had talked things over with the Commanders and he called the kennel for a meeting. But instead of the alpha speaking to the kennel, he was no where to be seen. Kalta stood in front of the dogs and made the announcements. "Hush now. I know we are all cold in the open so I'll make this quick. The Commanders have all spoken and some slight changes will be made to the kennel. First off, I'll announce the rank changes. Stark has been granted access by the ancestors to move up and become a trainee. He will train under me. Come up here and receive your ivy." Stark proudly makes his way to the platform. All eyes were on him and even though he could feel the hateful glares of Felix and Draxx, his mood could not be soured. Stark proudly lifted both his paws as Kalta wrapped ivy around his forelegs. He was a bit messy and had some sticks caught in his fur. His beaming smile made up for the fact that he hadn't cleaned himself before the meeting. Kalta smiled back at him and he rejoined Stella in the crowd.
Kalta continued. "Bandit, who has been training with Ulysses for the past few moons has finally come of age to take his exam. He can choose to take it now or wait until spring where there will be more prey and partners for the exam." Bandit wags his tail excitedly and Ulysses wraps a loving paw around him.
"With Stark becoming a trainee, Stella can now take her place in the kennel as a hunter. Please come up here for your ivy change." Stella receives ivy around her middle and gives up the ivy around her heart.
"Finally, our first pairing of the kennel will be Laila and Brutus. They have both proven that they are exceptional in their fields and will make fine pups." Laila looks around sheepishly as she did not expect to be paired with anyone. She hardly knew Brutus and now she is expected to have pups with him?! The only good thing she could think of was that he was good with puppies from him training Draxx. And she also heard that him and Stark had arrived at the kennel together when Stark was a pup. But still, she felt very nervous about mating with Brutus.
"We will also be splitting the patrols into smaller parties. That way we can cover more ground in less time and maybe find some more dogs, whether they be friendly or not. That is all the announcements today."

Garland returned from his absence and called Chi over to him. Chi sniffed his way to Garland and noticed a new scent beside him. Garland spoke. "It has come to my attention that you are having trouble getting around and gathering herbs. I have heard from a few concerned dogs that you may need a partner so I asked the ancestors for their decision and they have answered. This is Aurora, she will be training under you to become a healer. I assume that you will take good care of her and teach her all you know."
Chi had to keep his composure, as he thanked Garland for his generosity. "Thank you Garland, I will teach her all I know and won't let you down. It is a pleasure to meet you Aurora."
"Are you blind?"
The question took Chi by surprise. Garland whacked Aurora on the shoulder. "Child, you do not speak this way to your elders, never mind your superior! You will treat them with respect!"
"It's alright Garland. Better she know sooner than later. Yes I am blind, but that just means I'm better at smelling out herbs, especially the ones that look alike. You will have the advantage of knowing their scent and seeing their appearance one day."
"Wow, that's amazing! I can't wait to start."

the story of this pack begins with pain. it is stained with blood, it is full of remorse.
the story of this pack begins with a powerful dog, trained to kill and to show no mercy, that had killed more living beings than she could count. the fae's eyes always glimmered with rage, her claws always unsheathing in the ground, ready to tear apart skin, and her fangs, ready to take away life from other fighters.
the dog never let a dog close to her, nor twolegs, the ones that chose her fate and gave her no love. they only taught her how to find a dog's weakness and how to win by knowing it. she was known far and wide for her strength, and many twolegs traveled to see her fight, bringing dogs hat would inevitably lose against her blood thirst.
one day, a two leg brought a powerful dog, the only one known to have defeated her. but instead of taking her life, the brute fell in love with her, conquered by her eyes that never lost hope. she gave brith to just one pup, a wonderful creature that cracked the icy heart she had in her chest. she fought to keep it, and the twoleg let her, as long as the pup would follow his mother's fate. and it was in that moment, when the pup risked his life for the first time, that a truth dawned in the fae's heart: she could not let her pup become a bloodthirsty monster like her. with a terrible growl, the fae leaped forward, on her pup's rival, lacerating its throat. and with a swift move, she took the pup by the scruff of his neck and ran outside the hell she was born into, escaping a fate that was already written on her, and that was trying to be the same for her pup. but she would give him something better: freedom, and peace.

she found a refuge in an abandoned twoleg church, took over by nature itself. grass and bushes give plenty of places to rest, and the high roof give howls a particular... sound that the fae came to love. the backyard is a wonderful place to grow herbs; any shaman would wish for such a spacious garden. the front of the church wrapped by poisonous ivy, and in the bell tower resides the fae and her pup.

any dog is theoretically welcome in the pack, led by the fae's remorse. but in reality, she seeks for her pup's safety, and therefore only faithful, strong dogs are allowed to stay. those who betray the pack will be instantly killed, for the news of the surviving infamous she-dog cannot be spread. she is quite paranoid, and the only thing that keeps her mind in place is her pup, a joyful creature that is totally unaware of the tragic burden his mother is sustaining on her strong, yet now trembling shoulders. who will be able to win her trust, and be welcomed in a peaceful territory, full of peace and quietness?

the abandoned building didn't smell like twolegs, much to nemesis' satisfaction. the only scent came from the herbs that had grown everywhere in the building. fenrir was terribly tired; he was complaining about the long journey since when the sun set down behind the mountains; but the fae wanted to make sure no one was following them; her muscles were still aching for the long run, but she didn't mind. she had ignored pain for so long, she barely felt it. "can't we stay here, mommy?" fenrir's sweet voice echoed in the silent environment. "i like this... place." he said, his pointed muzzle moving around, taking in the faded decorations on the walls. the sunlight slipped from the cracks in the wall and from the broken windows, coloring it with orange, blue and green colors. nemesis sighed; she wanted to put more distance... but it was true; that place was so quiet, and they were distant enough. "alright. we will set here." she said, licking her pup's head. "i'll go check this place. stay here and rest, okay?" fenrir nodded, watching the brown doberman pad away, her pointy ears perked up cautiously.

"mommy feels so nervous," fenrir whispered, sitting down and rising his dark eyes up to the cloudy sky. "i wish someone could help her. she says she is fine with just me, but i think she needs a bit of help." he explained, wagging his stumpy tail. his ears had not been cut like his mother's, but the two leg had the time to cut his tail. he trembled softly at the memory of the pain, and how his mother gently took care of him, licking away the pain and comforting him. "i wish someone will come here and reassure mommy that everything will be just fine." he said, laying down and placing his muzzle on his big, goofy front paws. he thought about his dad: the only powerful creature that won against nemesis. perhaps he was looking for them? what if he managed to follow the scent left by them, to arrive here? would nemesis accept him? or fight him away?

a white shadow formed right in front of the sleeping pup. severed ears and tail, slender legs and clawed paws... it was nemesis' mother, herja. the spirit bowed her head and nuzzled fenrir's, before fading. the pup was right: nemesis needed help, even if she did not want it.

when nemesis walked back, she found the pup sleeping soundly, snoring in that adorable way that always melted her heart. there was no trace of the spirit, and the alphess trotted to fenrir, wrapping her slender, scarred body around the one of her pup. she needed to rest a bit, before they would patrol the area, set the borders and hunt.

indent• for the most part, CHESTNUT's patrol was peaceful and tranquil, with her just refreshing the borders' scent markers. though, as she is on her way back to the pack's camp. a rather scrappy looking dog, an airedale terrier, jumps into sight. they appear to be acting strange, not exactly sure where they were and how to get back to their home. it turns out that the dog was formerly a house pet, an observation of the worn-out leather collar around their neck a clear sign. what were they doing here? the dog wishes to stay with the pack, for now... maybe CHESTNUT could convince them into staying permanently? because what chance did they have with getting back home? too small of one.

indent• while out hunting, DANTE, SATURN, SHILOH and NIMBUS have brought back 02 rabbits that just so happened to be roaming in their territory. there would've been a third brought back, but the rabbit ended up breaking through SATURN's grip and fled before he could even chase after it, leaving him in his own dust. though, they should at least be grateful to have brought back something.

indent• not having much luck with their hunt at all, ROMAN, CINDER and OMEN were only able to catch 02 mice while they were out. though with the help of nimble-legged loner, a youthful saluki, they were able to bring back 01 rabbit. the saluki was only willing to give up their prey if they had been allowed into the pack, along with their twin, look-alike sibling. shall they be let in?

Previous Moon
Xeo and Wonder trotted along across the borders, coming up on the southern side. “Look, prints!” Wonder paused, pawing at the ground. In the soft dirt, deer tracks were imprinted leading away from the Free Runners territory. She leaned down to sniff them. “Somewhat recent.”
“Let’s leave it for Roman to find. Maybe Dante will promote him to alpha instead.” Xeo muttered.
“The decision was made. Let’s get over it.” Wonder narrowed her eyes. “Do you want a feast or not?”
“Two of us can’t take on an entire herd.” Xeo pointed out. “We’ll have to come back later with more dogs.”
“I’m sure they won’t go very far right now. The prairie is plentiful this time of year. They can wait.” Wonder said.
“And,” Xeo continued. “tracking down a deer herd won’t make us look bad.”
Wonder chuckled. “The first one back to camp gets to tell the pack.” She bolted as soon as she stopped speaking, leaving Xeo with a late start. He saved his breath for the sprint; he would complain about the unfairness of the race afterwards.

Roman growled, beginning to become frustrated. He knew Cinder meant well, but there was a reason their hunting party with a giant Great Dane had only caught two mice. She was just really noticeable with her size parting the long grass. “So close!” Omen wagged his tail. He didn’t seem to be discouraged with the results, however. “We’ll catch the next one.” Cinder flicked her tail once, thankful for his support. Roman felt a little guilty with his growing displeasure for the new pack member. She was trying her hardest.
“No worries.” Roman assured. “Two mice are better than no mice.”
“We can stay out a bit longer.” Cinder said. “I don’t mind.”
“Let’s try one more hunt.” Roman said. “Then we’ll call it a day whether we catch another or not.”
Omen circled once excitedly and immediately had his nose to the ground, sniffing for any signs of prey. Cinder hunkered down in the grass, leaving the initial tracking for the brutes. Roman pawed the ground, hoping to scare up a sleeping mouse. “Rabbit!” Omen barked, and the three took off in pursuit. While the dogs’ legs were long, the rabbit had a head start, and Omen at the front was starting to fall behind. Suddenly, the grass parted, and two dogs were running with the three. They had the advantage of fresh stamina, and one of them lunged to snag the rabbit. The three pack members stopped panting, annoyed that their chase was unsuccessful.
“You’re in our territory.” Roman said grumpily.
“The rabbit doesn’t know that.” One of the strangers shrugged. Roman assumed they were siblings as they were practically identical.
“But it is in our territory.” Roman reiterated. “It’s ours.”
“Technically.” Omen added. He received a glare from Roman.
“Then you should have ran faster.” The other said.
“Why don’t you leave the rabbit with us, and you can leave with your ears still intact?” Roman growled.
“The rabbit goes where we go.”
“Why don’t we share the rabbit?” Cinder suggested. “Share it back at camp?”
The two brothers shared a glance. “Camp?”
Cinder looked apologetically to Roman who shrugged. “If you’re truly interested, come with us…”
“Carmello.” One introduced.
“Othello.” The other said.

Present
The pack gathered around, waiting for Roman to delegate patrols for the day. Dante’s position of alpha required him to conduct ceremonies and make bigger decisions, but there wasn’t a lot for him to do with the pack so small. Although, he had chosen to try to track the deer from last moon, he still let Roman have the final say in who was going on the hunt. The new beta still seemed slightly unsure of himself, and that was not acceptable. Decisions should be made and stuck to.
“Dante?” Roman snapped Dante out of his thoughts for the day. “I’m assuming you want to be part of the patrol?”
“If you wish.” Dante said. It might take a while for him to step into this role, he thought.
“O-okay.” Roman turned back. “Then Dante, Omen, Carmello, Othello, Wonder, and I shall go to track the herd.”
“Carmello and Othello are going?” Xeo protested quiet enough that only Roman and Dante could here. “I found the tracks.”
“That’s appreciated. Let the new runners prove themselves now.” Roman turned his back to his rival.
Maybe Roman is figuring out Beta faster than I expected, Dante thought pleased.
