next visit to the gods anytime

paragraphhyperion's golden fur shone through the trees when he led the patrol to find and kill the bear. beside him, bellerophon's ears were pricked and alert, swiveling towards each rustle of leaves of distant crack in the woods. brontes had never fought a bear before, the young fighter reflected, though he couldn't help but feel confident that it would be easy work. the night before, hyperion gathered the fighters to say that they would kill the bear, leaving only cadmus to guard the camp, just in case anything went wrong. that night, cadmus and brontes eat their meals together and brontes listened while cadmus gave him advice. "stay light on your paws," cadmus had said, "and stay out of reach of its front legs." clearly cadmus didn't share the confidence the rest of the patrol had.
paragraphthat morning, they set out with the rest of the group seeing them off. hyperion assured alcides that they would be fine, though the demi-god's focus remained on ganymede, who offered a wide smile and wag of his tail. at last, alcides nodded to let them off, saying "come back safe," though it was clear he spoke to ganymede more than the rest of them. brontes was willing to bet that alcides and ganymede would be mates by the end of the season.
paragraphsure enough, ganymede was whispering to polyxena to brontes' left as they walked. "i mean - he's just so nice and really wants us all to be safe. but i think it's more than that. he actually cares, you know?" ganymede was rambling, and brontes caught polyxena rolling her eyes. the tornjak had always been an outsider, not one to talk much, though ganymede didn't notice and continued to rattle until bellerophon growled over his shoulder.
paragraph"we have more important things to worry about than your stupid crush," he snapped, and ganymede was silent until brontes looked past polyxena to meet ganymede's eyes.
paragraph"he definitely does care, especially about you," brontes assured, and ganymede blinked his appreciation. "and just think of how happy he'll be when we get back." at that, ganymede mouthed his thanks and ducked his head shyly. polyxena huffed between them and strode to catch up with hyperion and bellerophon.
paragraphnot long after, hyperion waved his tail to halt the group. bellerophon and polyxena flanked him while tyche covered the back of the patrol, brontes and ganymede in front of her. "there's fresh scent up here, so be aware. we're getting close." brontes felt ganymede's eyes bore into the side of his head, and the danger became immediate. up to this moment, their group never faced a threat that would have needed a battle patrol. for the most part, they had only been charged with bringing dogs back to camp for perseus and alcides to deal with. a bear was new, and brontes fought to think about what cadmus would do in this situation.
paragraphwhat happened next was sudden, though not entirely unexpected. the bear came from the right, where brontes and polyxena were standing, tyche only a length behind. it crashed into polyxena first, knocking her off of her paws before she had the chance to turn and face the beast. it snarled, showing hideous yellow teeth, and brontes allowed instinct to take over. he launched himself at the bear's side, snapping his own jaws and vaguely aware of the rest of the patrol joining in the attack. his teeth connected with the bear's ear and he bit down, struggling to find a hold for his paws. the bear swung his head and brontes was flung aside with a sour taste filling his mouth. he landed on his side and found his paws quickly. the rest of the patrol was spread out around the bear, with hyperion and bellerophon barking viciously at the front. ganymede supported polyxena on its left, the latter bleeding heavily from the side, and tyche snarled at the right.
paragraphganymede met brontes' eyes and called out, asking if he was alright. brontes nodded, though the movement made his head swim and wonder if he'd possibly hit a rock during his fall. at last, the bear swiped towards bellerophon, though the dark shepard avoided it easily by dodging to one side. in the same instant, tyche launched herself at the bear again. one of its ears had been shredded from brontes, and blood stained the dirt.
paragraphwhen tyche had been thrown off, brontes took a running start towards the bear's front, thinking only of protecting his friends and the kennel that took him in. this bear would not kill any of his friends, not so long as he could do something about it. however, his vision swam when his feet left the ground and he must have mis-judged. in the same moment, the bear reared back on its hind legs and swatted with one of its forelegs, swatting brontes down into the ground. someone shouted his name - either ganymede or hyperion - and the world went dark for a heartbeat. pressure clamped down on his head and his pulse was loud in his ears, only to feel a second of relief when he was surrounded by snarls. teeth pressed in the scruff of his neck, surprisingly gentle, and the ground shifted under his tired body.
paragraphbrontes managed to blink one of his eyes open and saw tyche standing above him. "you're okay," she whispered. over her shoulder, he could still see his friends snarling at the bear. "the others are sending it away. ganymede is getting help for you and polyxena. just stay with me, keep your eyes open," she encouraged, but brontes suddenly felt cold and tired. he needed to sleep, to wake up and feel refreshed.

paragraphfor the first time, the smell of blood permeated the mount olympus camp when ganymede burst through the entrance to where cadmus spoke with alcides. immediately, the fighter and demi-god turned to the sound, and alcides stood immediately at the sight of ganymede. the mutt's sides heaved with effort and his entire body seemed to sway on his paws, though none of the other members had a chance to reach him before ganymede shook out his fur and yelled, "we need perseus. brontes and polyxena are hurt." from what alcides could see, ganymede's fur was streaked with blood, and he pressed against his newest friend's flank.
paragraphat the sound of his name, perseus emerged from his den, ears perked and eyes wide, though the samoyed paused when his eyes focused on ganymede. alcides spoke comfortingly to the fighter, who trembled under his touch. "the bear -" ganymede stuttered, "it just - swatted him like it was nothing -" and so he rambled. alcides continued to hush him, leading him past perseus. upon closer inspection, and to his own relief, it seemed that the youngest fighter wasn't harmed in the fighting. or, at the very least, not physically. it was clear that he was shaken up, though alcides suspected that he wasn't in grave danger at the moment. instead, his eyes met perseus, who nodded once.
paragraphat the entrance, perseus gathered sarpedon and cadmus. the three turned and raced out of the entrance, sarpedon setting a fast pace typical of a hunter with perseus and cadmus trailing behind. "ganymede," alcides tried to soothe him, "you need to tell me what happened." but ganymede shook violently and his head snapped from side to side. his eyes were shut tightly and alcides fell silent, opting instead to shift so that he could lower his chin on ganymede's shoulder. the fighter pressed close and lowered his head to alcides' chest, which ached from ganymede's fear.

paragraphsarpedon led the sprint through the woods to find hyperion's patrol. they had been so confident that the bear would be easy to deal with; they had a full patrol of healthy fighters to chase it away, and yet that wasn't enough. the look on ganymede's face was haunting, full of fear, and sarpedon felt his own anxiety rising for his packmates. behind him, he could make out the sounds of cadmus' heavy breathing and perseus' more graceful steps, and he wished his own paws to carry him faster.
paragraphthe strong scent of blood, fear, and bear led sarpedon to the patrol. bushes had been trampled from the fighting, though the bear was no where in sight. instead, the four dogs sat in a circle. each of their pelts were streaked with blood, though sarpedon couldn't immediately tell if it was from their own wounds. polyxena leaned heavily against tyche, though the others seemed not to be too hurt. it took sarpedon a moment too long to realize that brontes wasn't sitting up with the rest of them, and his breath caught in his throat when he saw the fighter's dark body in the middle of the others, stretched out on his side and the ground turned a rusted color. "is he..." he breathed, unable to finish the question. bellerophon looked up first, his eyes bright with anger, and sarpedon stopped from stepping any closer to the fighters.
paragraphinstead, he turned his head when perseus and cadmus joined the group. perseus didn't hesitate to push between bellerophon and hyperion. the former stiffened and opened his mouth to speak, though hyperion let him go easily and shifted to give him more room. "cadmus, get over here, we need to get him to get to camp now." as opposed to perseus, cadmus took a moment to breathe deeply and brace himself before moving forward.
paragraph"is he dead?" cadmus asked, and every dog in the group let out a sigh when perseus shook his head.
paragraph"he's still breathing, you're going to have to carry him." cadmus nodded once and perseus glanced to polyxena. "can you walk?" he asked, only to shake his head before she could answer. "sarpedon help her. if she starts to slow, tell me," then, to tyche, "can you help him?" perseus asked her.
paragraph"excuse me," a stranger's voice spoke, and sarpedon whipped around to see a pair of young german shepards standing several lengths away. the larger one, a female, stepped forward while the other stood back, shuffling his paws. "we smelled the blood and my brother used to be a healer's apprentice. can we help you?"
paragraph"get out of here," bellerophon snapped, but the male shepard straightened up and looked only to perseus.
paragraph"the gods send their regards." his tone was calm and even, and perseus nodded to him once, then turned to cadmus.
paragraph"go, get him back to camp." without any further waiting, cadmus nodded and hurried off with brontes on his back. "can you go with him? make him comfortable and slow the bleeding," he asked the stranger, to which the male nodded. wordlessly, the pair turned and followed after cadmus.
paragraph"was that a good idea?" that was hyperion, standing at last. his eyes were hollow and shoulders low, and it was the first time sarpedon remembered hearing the commander's voice sound so flat and pained.
paragraph"if you have a better idea, i'm open to suggestions," perseus murmured. at that, hyperion ducked his head. sarpedon took his signal to move to polyxena, supporting her weight against his shoulder. he immediately knew that it would be a long walk back to camp, even when tyche moved to help polyxena on her other side.

paragraphthe camp had already been abuzz after ganymede returned, though chaos erupted the moment cadmus came back with brontes and two strange shepards. still, no one stopped the small group from going into perseus' den. only proteus moved forward and left when he saw the darker female help cadmus place brontes into a bed of moss. the male shepard returned to sight with cobwebs wrapped around his paws, and proteus thought it would be best to give them space. sure enough, perseus returned not long after, and barely glanced to proteus when he pushed into his den, only asking that he bring polyxena in when she returned. proteus wanted to ask about the patrol, but alcides had taken ganymede into his den to calm him down, and perseus was busy with brontes.
paragraphcadmus emerged a moment later and sat down heavily beside proteus. "we've never dealt with anything like this before," he murmured, and proteus shook his head.
paragraph"we've been lucky."
paragraph"lucky?" cadmus huffed critically, "tell that to brontes and polyxena."
paragraphtime stretched out from there, the camp lapsing back into excitement when the main patrol return. sarpedon and tyche led polyxena into perseus' den while the rest of the group watched on. the rest of the hunters looked on in fear, eyeing the battered fighters until proteus left cadmus to stand in front of perseus' den. he crossed the clearing to where hyperion and bellerophon took were standing, fur streaked with blood and clearly worse for wear, but not heavily injured. "perseus is with brontes and polyxena," proteus assured hyperion, who nodded once. "the bear?" he asked when it seemed clear that hyperion was in no mood for speaking unless answering a question.
paragrapheven then, bellerophon answered for him, "we chased it away. it went north, past our borders," he said, but proteus could tell that even he wasn't confident. they had set out to kill the beast, and instead two of their own were gravely injured.
paragraphall the same, proteus knew there was nothing to be done about it now. instead, he found andromache sitting with asterion, who was whispering softly in her ear, clearly trying to distract her. when proteus came close, however, andromache sat up and tried to compose herself. "mind leading a hunting party?" he asked, not missing the spark of fear that shone in her eyes. he couldn't blame her. "you can take cadmus to protect you - better to get him out of camp, too. also sarpedon and whoever else you can get as well," he assured, confident that his hunters would be able to outrun a bear if needed or, at the very least, they would have cadmus and strength in their own numbers. he just hoped that the bear would be wary of coming around again. "we need food so the fighters can get their strength back."
paragraphat the prospect of helping the fighters, andromache seemed to come to life and she nodded. "of course, we'll head out immediately."
paragraph"i'll go too," asterion added, and proteus nodded, leaving them to round up other hunters to go with them.
paragraphfrom there, proteus rounded the camp to alcides' den. he called out the demi-god's name and entered when welcomed inside. there, ganymede was curled up in the far corner of the den, his eyes shut, and proteus sent alcides a questioning look. "he's still shaken up by all of it. i told him to get some sleep," he said and ganymede snored as if in answer. proteus managed a smile when alcides smiled fondly at ganymede's sleeping form. then alcides looked back at proteus and his expression shifted, turning more serious. "how are they?"
paragraph"hyperion, bellerophon, and tyche seem fine. polyxena was walking, but barely..." he trailed off then, speaking again only when alcides urged him on. "perseus kicked almost everyone out of his den, so i don't know everything but... brontes didn't look good when cadmus brought him back."
paragraphalcides' shoulders sagged, and proteus wished for all of their sakes that he had a better feeling in the pit of his gut. alcides shook his head slightly and paused only to look at ganymede, "let me know if there are any updates," he murmured, and proteus nodded again. then, before proteus had the chance to leave, alcides looked up at him, eyes soft and face drawn. "have you ever considered the offer i gave you a few moons ago?" he asked, and proteus hesitated. of course he thought what it would be like to be alcides' adviser. it meant that there would be even more responsibility resting on his shoulders, that he would be in charge of helping alcides keep the rest of the group afloat. for moons he thought it best that he managed the hunters. but he also thought of what alcides said the day proteus said that he would join - that the gods had much in store for proteus, that he would serve the group in a large way. that they had plans in place for him. at the time, he assumed it meant only being the head hunter, but now he couldn't be sure.
paragraph"i've thought about it," proteus said, and alcides lifted his head. "and... i'll do it. but, i don't think it should be announced yet. give them time to heal," he added, and alcides' gaze again turned to ganymede. the young fighter shifted in his sleep and his nose twitched.
paragraph"of course," alcides said. "if there are any updates from perseus, let me know." proteus said he would and left.
paragraphthe sky was darkening by the time proteus returned to perseus' den. the camp was fairly empty, with only bellerophon and hyperion sitting with tyche in the shadows by the fighters' den. of the hunters, it seemed that andromache and asterion managed to convince them out for some hunting to burn off their energy. otherwise, only the pupils were in the camp, and proteus could imagine them hiding in their own den, not wanting to get in the way and under orders not to leave camp. the hunters returned some time later, laden with prey. proteus nodded to them when they arrived, and hermes padded across to pereus' den with a hare clamped between his jaws. however, proteus stopped him before he could go inside.
paragraph"perseus isn't letting anyone in yet. but i'll hold this here for him. if you could also bring prey for alcides and ganymede, that would be great." hermes blinked his large eyes for a moment and dropped the prey at proteus' paws. even hermes, who was normally so cheerful, appeared downtrodden by the day's events.
paragraphhermes shuffled his paws and dipped his nose down towards the ground. "if you see brontes, tell him we're all hoping he feels better. him and polyxena." proteus smiled gently and told hermes he would pass the word on, and the hound turned back to fetch food for alcides.
paragraphat long last, a dark nose poked out from perseus' den, and the dark shepard looked up at proteus. "you're proteus, right?" she asked, then continued with proteus nodded, "he said you could come in now." she stepped out, her brother in tow.
paragraph"feel free to take food, if you'd like. our leader's den is over there," proteus told them, watching the pair pad slowly across to alcides' den before he took in a deep breath to brace himself.
paragraphproteus lost count of how many times he'd been in perseus' den, though he had never seen it in such a disarray before. numerous leaves were scattered across the floor, and perseus' white fur was matted with cobwebs and leaves, stained with red. perseus stood over polyxena and speaking quietly to her, though he paused when proteus entered. proteus caught his eye and hesitated, and perseus whispered once more. it was only when polyxena murmured something in return that perseus backed away and her eyes fell shut, her breathing evening out. from where proteus stood, he couldn't see brontes, and his stomach churned when perseus finally spoke, tone low and tired, "come with me," he exhaled, and proteus followed him deeper into the den, where brontes was lying in another nest. the fighter let out a wheezing breath and proteus already knew that it was worse than anyone might have thought. as if reading his mind, perseus leaned close to whisper, "we did what we could but... it's bad. he's not going to make it."
paragraph"you're sure?" proteus asked, and perseus sighed.
paragraph"i wish i wasn't. but... i can't do anything else, proteus." his name cracked in the high priest's mouth, and he immediately pressed himself close.
paragraphperseus' fur was surprisingly warm, though the smell of herbs and sickening stench of blood held in his pelt. "you did what you could. no one could ask for anything else. it happens." he thought of brontes, usually quiet but always consistent and ready to help. he was still young, too young to die. he'd barely had a chance to experience life, and he was going to die. together, proteus and perseus sat together and waited until brontes' breathing finally stopped in the dead of the night. it was in that moment that perseus seemed to break, just as ganymede had earlier that morning. proteus could only whisper softly to him - that it wasn't it fault, that he'd tried his best, that brontes would be watching them from the heavens now, that his pain had stopped. he wasn't sure if perseus could hear him, though he continued to soothe him until, later, perseus stood to check polyxena again. afterwards, proteus stated that he wasn't going to leave perseus along. until dawn, they laid curled together in perseus' nest, both pretending to be asleep but neither being able to find peace behind their eyelids.

Ewan bounded back into the camp quickly, making his way silently towards the king's den and letting out a soft bark, "Ola'keyta, are you there?"
He heard some rustling from within the cave and tried to arch his neck to have a better look amongst the gaps in the mosses, but quickly stepped back in alarm when the king emerged from the cave, looking down at the commandre with curious eyes.

"What is the matter, dewani?" his voice rumbled.
"Up north, I was on patrol earlier and I spotted a group of three wandering about our lands, they seem to be rather...aggressive."

Ormani tilted his head, "aggressive? What do they look like?"
Ewan nodded, "one's a black dog which I reckon is the leader and the other two looked like mutts, barking at the top of their lungs, it's a wonder how our dogs hadn't heard them, and I managed to sneak back to camp. What should we do about them?"

"Be wary, we wouldn't know if they have more dogs with them, as the celebration begins I want you to keep a watch on them whilst you hunt, if anything becomes suspicious, report back to me immediately."

Now:

The groups were finally sorted out and sat surrounding Ormani and the other dogs that weren't participating in the hunt, and most of them were howling in excitement, trying to seem fiercer than the opposing team, whilst the rest sat with their muzzles held high, chest puffed out in pride.

Devise yearned to join them, to run and feel the wind brush past her face and ruffle her fur.
But that was also what she chose to give up when she decided to become an ivinaki.

"Listen up!" Ormani barked, "I will commence the start of this celebration soon enough, but before we start, I shall need to lay down some rules."
The dogs looked at him eagerly, already ready to take off,
"Firstly, do not harm any dog, secondly, do not eat the feed that you have caught, always bring it back before we start. Thirdly, be back by sunset, if any of you become hurt in the process, retreat to camp immediately, remember, this is no fierce competition."

He smiled, "with that, may the festivities begin."

"Is this what you usually do in the camp? Lazing around and watching the non-existent birds in the sky?" Norman asked with a grin.
Devise tried to keep a straight face instead of lashing out at the newcomer, had he not been the king's brother, she would have reprimanded his ears off.

Sucking in a shaky breath to calm herself down, she rolled to her side, facing her back towards him hoping that he would take the hint and back off.
But of course, he looked over to her before carrying on, "aren't you a very useful dog?"

"Listen, dewani, shut up." Devise finally said, sitting up as she growled at Norman, "if you weren't ola'keyta's brother, I would have-" she stopped, a scowl present on her snout.
"Have what?" Norman mimicked her movements, sitting back up, and that was when she realized how much taller he was compared to her height.
She didn't reply to his question, but unfazed, lept off the rock they were previously resting on as she stalked away, hearing Norman tailing after her as his paws thudded heavily against the ground, "did I hit a nerve?"

Finally allowing her frustration get the better of her, she turned around and lept on the unsuspecting Norman, knocking him off his balance as she pinned him on the ground, snarling and baring her fangs.
"Last warning, dewani, I don't have much patience left."
Norman didn't seem scared or anything, in fact, he seemed more amused than anything else, but with a smirk, he managed to catch Devise off guard as he threw her off, pinning her on the ground instead as a yelp escaped from her.

"You don't stand a chance against me, sweetpea."

The novice tried her best to keep her breath even, feeling her heart thumping wildly against her ribcage as his eyes bore into hers.
Finally, with a huff, he stepped away, allowing her to recompose herself.

"Sorry if I'm being mean, it's...just in my nature." she managed to hear him mutter quietly before watching him stalk off silently.

》 Territory:

The territory of Fallen Empire is quite large, but heavily guarded. The alpha, referred to as Queen / King, after walking for many moons, discovered a fallen castle. She discided this is where she would stay for however long. The old castle has many rooms, this is where canines of different rank would stay, like Knights (Ironteeth) would stay in one room, while young would stay in another with an adult or two. Though, the spot they gather to discuss things is quite large, and has knights guarding any to all entrances around the territory.

》 Personality / Reputation:

These dogs are feared and respected, they're known to be overly aggressive to outsiders and rivals, they may even kill without warning. You don't want to get on the bad side of these canines, lore has it that Fallen Empire killed off a whole pack one by one until there wasn't a dog left under that pack's name. Though, being an ally to this pack will be helpful, they respect to those who respect them.
These dogs have tight bonds in the pack, every once in a while dogs break out into fights, but they never end with injurie beside a few minor scrapes and cuts. The pack is super protective of its members, hurt a dog and you may not see the light of tomorrow. They are lowkey pretty lovable, mostly dames, to members, but it's more so tough love. However, if they threaten you, you better take it seriously, or learn the consequences.

Anastasia's paws carried her over the damp ground without much issue, hare dangling from between her jaws as she made her way back to the abandoned human place she had been sleeping under for the past few moons. Her pelt prickled along her spine, but she ignored it. The feeling had been coming and going in fleeting moments for a while now. She knew he was watching her, but she knew he would stay out of sight. A wolf in broad daylight this close to humanity wouldn't bode well. And so she continued over the land, still wet from the last night's rain, dew dripping from blades of grass, and bees beginning to buzz through flowery fields.
Anastasia crawled on her belly under the house, settling into the little nest she'd hollowed out and warmed with a blanket she'd stolen when the winds had blown the door open. Glittering golden eyes appeared at the front of the structure, peering under the raised foundation to try and find her. Anastasia gave him a quizzical, if not a tad smug, expression, tilting her head a bit. After a moment, the wolf too crawled under the house.
"Hello?" She said, not bothering to keep the blatant amusement out of her voice.
"I've been watching you," he said, settling a safe distance away from her. Anastasia stretched, languidly, keeping one paw on her hare, possessively. It might have been close quarters, and the wolf might have had size on her, but Anastasia was a sentinel. He would stand no chance against her, should he choose to fight her for the hare.
"I've noticed," she said tersely, and the wolf laughed his merry laugh.
"I thought I was being more subtle," he said, "you surprised me, that night. No ordinary dog could have made a journey like you did. So I have been watching, waiting. Trying to understand what makes you special, but you've produced more questions than answers. Questions about why you help the humans- you are not a companion of theirs, and yet you go out of your way to ensure their safety. I have seen you gentle with pups but viciously rough against those that cross you. You're an enigma, frankly, and I don't like to be left in the dark. I doubt you'll answer all of my questions, so I have just one: why do you choose to help the humans if you were not born indebted to them, like the dogs they keep restrained?" Anastasia hesitated, eyeing up the wolf suspiciously, before she blew out a sigh.
"Because it's the right thing to do," she said, "it doesn't matter that I owe them nothing, I see the opportunity to help them and I take it, because that's what my mentor taught me to do. She said, in this life you have a choice: a choice to look out for only yourself, and to look the other way, or to stand up and fight, to help those who cannot help themselves, and to do good in the world without asking for anything in return. She is a good dog, and she believed in me when no one else did. I value her wisdom, and I wish to follow her teachings, and so I do."
"Her goodness extends to strange humans?"
"Her goodness knows no bounds," Anastasia snapped back at the tone he took, "she believes that doing good will result in good things coming to you. Perhaps in time, I will be in danger, and that human will help me. I do not know, but I don't do these things because I desire some reward. I do them because they feel right."
"You are still so strange to me," the wolf tilted his head, curiously, before he shook it, with another merry laugh, "but I suppose I have asked my question. If I may have one more... what is your name?"
"Anastasia," she drew up taller, in her seated position, shoulders square, "a last sentinel, marked of the brave."
"I'll pretend I know what that means," the wolf winked, drawing himself into a crouch so that he could shift around in a circle and head toward the front. A second from being out from under the house, he turned back, his golden eyes meeting her own mismatched ones. "I'm Akiani, by the way. I'll be seeing you around, Ana." And with a toothy grin, he was gone, leaving Anastasia to ponder his strangeness in his wake.

Erinat blinked at the strange dog, with Ryota at one shoulder, and Nevada at the other, the three husky puppies peeking out from behind her leg. Cadmus shifted nervously, glancing at the beauceron in front of her. Erinat glanced between them again. Cadmus averted her eyes to the ground. The beauceron stood, unblinking. Solnyshko blinked up at Erinat, lightly nudging her back leg. The large she-dog blinked at her, smiling fondly as the husky pup nodded at him.
"Well? Aren't you gonna say anything?" She prompted, and Erinat chuckled, bending to touch her nose to her forehead.
"I was getting there," she assured her, turning back to the dog, "I am Erinat, captain of the Sentinels. You didn't give Cadmus a name?" Her head tilted a little, as the dog let out a sigh, and then a nod.
"It wasn't Cadmus I was looking for," he said, blinking at Erinat, "I was told by Ursus that I was to find an 'Erinat', captain of the Sentinels, so I suppose I am in the right place after all." He turned, and gave a nod to Cadmus. "I am sorry if I caused you any trouble, Cadmus. My name is Vasilios, I am here to train as a sentinel, sent by who I assume is your daughter?" He gave a curious look to Erinat, who let out a relieved breath of air and a nod.
"My daughter," she confirmed, "thank you for bringing me news of her, I'm relieved to hear she is well." Erinat gave the dog a warm smile. "We would be glad to have you, Vasilios. If we are to rebuild the order, the Sentinels will need every member they can get. For now, you should rest. I am aware you must have come a long way to find us." Vasilios' face stretched into a warm smile, and he nodded. Ryota stepped forward, nudging his shoulder lightly.
"I'll show you where you can sleep. If you're hungry, we can find you some fresh kill." The beauceron murmured his thanks as he followed the Akita off, leaving Cadmus facing Erinat and Nevada alone. She ducked her head a little, ears flattening back against her skull. The elder shepherd stepped forward, touching her nose to the other's shoulder.
"Hey, head up," she said in her usual gruff tone, "Erinat isn't mad at you, you didn't do anything wrong. Have more confidence in yourself." She nudged her shoulder against Cadmus', before she turned to blink over her shoulder at Erinat. "I'm going to go for a hunt, if we've got more dogs we're going to need more- gah!" Nevada jumped, turning her head back just in time to avoid smashing into a tan and white pelt. Erinat gasped from behind her.
"I don't believe I've seen you before," Almas said, before his eyes lighted on his old pack mate. He ducked around Nevada, revealing an amber-coloured dog who started to protest his leaving, before her face softened as the saint bernard met the old ovcharka in the middle of camp, both of their tails wagging as they rested their jaws on each other's shoulders. "But you, my dear," Almas said with a rumble, "are a sight for sore eyes."
"Almas," Erinat's voice was little more than a soft sigh, "welcome home. I see you've brought a friend with you." Almas turned to look over his shoulder, blinking at the strange dog. Her tail perked up a little, and she gave Erinat a bright smile, as Nevada stepped around her suspiciously, and continued on into the forest. Cadmus looked between the two groups, and then bounded off after Ryota, leaving the two old friends in the centre of the camp with the stranger and the pups.
"Whoa," said Koshmar, "you're so... red."
"Thank you," said the dog with a laugh, meeting Erinat's eyes, "I'm Keezheekoni. I met Almas on his way back here, and I figured I would come along for the ride. It seems like you do good work here, and I... well. I don't have much place else to go, so if I'm going to head somewhere, it might as well be somewhere I can make a change."
"That's exactly how I feel!" Solnyshko exclaimed, before glaring at her brother as he stepped on her paw.
"Welcome to the Sentinels then, Keezheekoni," Erinat smiled warmly at her, before crouching to talk to the pups, "why don't you show our new friend around, hm? I have some things I need to talk about with Almas." The pups nodded excitedly, bounding across to the estrela mountain dog and shepherding her in the direction of the old barn where most of the sentinels slept. Almas watched them go, waiting until they rounded the corner to turn to Erinat with twinkling eyes.
"There's nothing serious to discuss, is there?"
"Not a thing at all," Erinat confirmed, amused, "I'm just glad to have you back. I thought we should catch up on your travels."
"It seems like you've had an interesting time too, Erinat. I'm excited to hear about what's been happening with you." The ovcharka laughed, shaking her great head a little, as she leaned against her old friend, letting the younger dog support her weight.
"Well... I suppose time is on our side here, Almas."

𝐭𝐡𝐢𝐬 𝐦𝐨𝐨𝐧.
phoenix, arizona -
"Thanks for coming along," Abakan smiled at Harley, watching the dog jump up onto an abandoned car in the middle of the desert. No lights from cars lit the highway, leaving them shrouded in darkness. Harley itched his shoulder against the placard that had been attached to the car, giving the humans some kind of a sign to look at as they passed on the highway. It was really the only thing to look at for miles around, but Abakan liked the open air and the open land. It was nice to see the stars twinkling overhead, like they did at home.
"It's not a problem, Abi," Harley said, leaping down from his perch, and padding along next to his bigger companion, "you know I always like an adventure. Besides! You just popped up again, it's not like I'm willing to let my friend go after such a long time apart. And you know, you'll need someone to protect you." Abakan laughed as Harley jostled his shoulder playfully.
"Oh, is that right? You're going to protect me?" He gave Harley a curious albeit amused look, and the rottsky stuck his tongue out at him briefly, before bounding ahead, leaving Abakan to streak after him. The two of them ran in companionable silence, eating up ground as they sprinted across the open land . Neither of them really knew where they were going, only that there was somewhere over the horizon, somewhere where they would find dogs, somewhere where The Call would take them. As they passed a rock outcrop, Harley skidded to a sudden halt, making Abakan scrabble against the hard dirt underfoot.
"Hey?" He said imploringly, head tilting a little. Harley's eyes glittered pensively in the dark, as he turned and looked out across the highway. A car slowly made it's way past, roar kicking up dust on the edges of the highway before everything settled, and the night was quiet again.
"What's coming, Abi?" Harley asked, staring at his friend. The ovcharka sighed, heavily, and then turned to look with Harley. The night was still. The stars kissed the tops of the hulking red rocks. Abakan closed his eyes, letting the light wind pick up his fur and rustle it around.
"I don't know," he said, softly, "I just know something is. I don't even know if Mom knows... but either way, it's better to be safe than sorry. So I'm here, taking up The Call, so that when whatever it is comes, she won't be facing it alone." He turned to find Harley staring at him, mismatched eyes even more serious in the darkness. Abakan tilted his head, feeling an urgency come to his tongue, certain words desperate to be said, but stuck in his throat.
"And you're sure?" Harley said, voice quiet. "Above everything else, you've got a conviction about all of this?" Abakan nodded.
"Yeah."
"Then I'm with you," Harley took a step closer, squaring his shoulders, "where you go, I go. Where you stand, I stand. We're a team from here on out, Abi, and I won't hear any arguments. Your mother shouldn't face this alone, but neither should you." Abakan's eyes widened in surprised, before his features softened. He let out a gentle laugh, and nodded slowly, ducking his head bashfully at the open affection Harley had showed him.
"For what it's worth," he said, "there's no one else I'd rather have in my corner." Harley snorted and nudged his shoulder with his own, before he took off again. Abakan's long legs easily caught up with him, and the pair of them ran on together, shoulder-to-shoulder, silent against the stillness of the night.

siberian taiga -
"We're big enough to go with you!" Koshmar complained, giving Erinat a sulky look as the older members of the pack splintered into their respective patrols. Almas and Ryota shared an amused look as the old ovcharka chuckled, nodding sagely.
"You are," she said, "but according to the pack's customs, you have to be six moons old before we can give you a mentor." Koshmar and his siblings made annoyed whining sounds, making the old she-wolf who had graciously descended from her den to pup-sit again chuckle. Erinat and Tappituk exchanged fond glances, both of the elder faes having bonded quite closely with the young pups. She leaned down, touching her nose to Koshmar's forehead.
"It's not too long now, little one," she said, "if you like, I can show you some battle moves while the others hunt." The idea was met by excited cheers from the pups.
"That sounds wonderful," Erinat said, grateful for her friend's help, "we should be back before the sun sets. You three be good." She gave them stern looks, and once she had their promises, and had exchanged fond goodbye gestures, she and Almas turned tail and headed into the forest areas surrounding the camp. The last moon had been wonderful for the pair of them: Almas had told Erinat of all his adventures, and in turn Erinat had filled him in on the newcomers in the camp. Most, excepting Ryota, could not gain an official mark due to their lack of healers. Although Ryota and Cadmus were trained, both seemed happy to settle in as sentinels.
"But you do have ideas for their marks, correct?" Almas asked, walking shoulder to shoulder with the captain as they neatly skirted one of the pack's far-off borders. Erinat chuckled that amused little chuckle she had, the one that seemed a little offended anyone would ever think otherwise about the question they'd just asked.
"Of course I do," she said, "Cadmus is nervous and shy, but good of heart and quick on her feet. She should be marked of the intelligent, the sigil of a thinker. Ryota is, of course, the mark of the helper- I'm sure you remember his ceremony as well as I do. Nevada is gruff and impatient and a tad bit temperamental at times, but she cares. She should be marked of the resilient, for her willingness to do whatever she needs to. Vasilios and Kee are a little harder, since I've known them less time. Vasilios seems stalwart and steady, and for that I think he should be marked of the true, someone who knows the right thing to do and who will always stand strong to defend justice. Kee almost glows with optimism, she's positive and bubbly and genuinely sees good in the world. She should be marked of the bright-spirit, to remind her that hope is simply a beacon of light in impossible darkness."
"You have given this a lot of thought," Almas teased, nudging Erinat's shoulder with his own. She nudged his shoulder back, rolling her eyes at him, "although I do suppose that's a facet of your job." Erinat heaved a great sigh, and nudged him again, this time hard enough to throw him off his paws, and send him sprawling into the snow.
"Indeed it is," she said, voice laced with amusement as Almas sputtered, "and another job of mine is keeping you pups in line." She and Almas exchanged a look, before they burst into merry laughter, voices floating up into the cool spring air and settling overhead like a warm blanket. Finally, in the cold and isolated taiga, the territory began to feel like home again.

Kee stood out ahead of the hunting party, casting a glance over her shoulder. Behind her, Ryota and Vasilios walked shoulder to shoulder, engaged in some pleasant conversation, with Cadmus trailing just behind Ryota and Nevada bringing up the air, her nose pressed to the ground, trying to pick up some scent against the wetness of the ground. It didn't matter what season it was, the ground always seemed damp from the spring snow-showers melting within seconds.
"Getting anything?" She asked, the question making Nevada lift her head and fix her with a stare. Even after a month here, Nevada still unnerved Kee a little bit. The short-haired shepherd was so serious and gruff, it was hard to get a fix on what she was feeling. Finally, Nevada shook her head, and then went back to scenting the ground. Kee blew out a relieved sigh. That was about as amicable as one could get with her, as far as she could tell.
"Maybe we should split up?" Cadmus suggested, as the party pulled up to a stop.
"I think it would be more beneficial to be together in the event we come across large prey," Vasilios said, and Nevada made a humming noise from behind them that said she agreed. Kee turned to smile brightly at Ryota, the old Akita looking bewildered to suddenly be the centre of attention.
"You're the ranking sentinel," Kee said cheerfully, "your decision."
"I say we stay together then," Ryota said, after a moment of contemplation, "you're all a little fresh to this, and I'd prefer no one gets lost in the territory. We don't exactly have the numbers for an effective search party. And Vasilios is right, if we run across bigger prey it's better to have all of us together. And," he added, with a large smile, "it'll be a bonding experience." Nevada groaned.
"You just had to put it like that, didn't you?"
"Absolutely, my dear. You'll love it." Nevada rolled her eyes, and Kee exchanged a shocked glance with Cadmus. Neither of them had realized that Nevada and Ryota had had such a good relationship. The short-haired dog was even smiling, shaking her head in a good-natured fashion, with a pantomimed heavy sigh.
"I highly doubt that, but... the rest of the plan sounds good. So I'll try. For you." They knocked shoulders affectionately, before the she-dog trotted forward, brushing past Kee and turning to blink over her shoulder. She gave them all a flat but quizzical expression, cocking her head to the side just the slightest bit. "Are you slowpokes coming? I wouldn't want to leave you in the dust." Ryota laughed, bounding forward to catch up to Nevada, with the rest of the party close behind him.

All was quiet in the campgrounds. It was warm enough to sleep with the doors of the old human places open, so that Erinat could see the sleeping forms of her sentinels across the way. Ryota and Cadmus slept back to back, with Nevada stretched languidly on the other side of him. Vasilios and Kee slept quietly by themselves, and Almas lay as a mid point between them, his snores carrying across the still spring air to where Erinat was curled around the three pups who had taken to her as a mother figure.
And then suddenly, there was another figure, more spectral this time, but ultimately familiar. His paws did not left indents in the fresh snow, but Erinat could never forget the way they looked. She unwound herself from around the puppies, stepping forward to meet him, the thin layer of white melting under the heat of her pads. She did not stop until they were almost nose to nose, the starry eyes of her mate twinkling fondly.
"Hello again," he said warmly, "fancy seeing you here."
"Zian," she sighed, leaning forward to touch noses with him, "I wish I knew you were here under better circumstances. I've been feeling something- a build up. What's going on?" Her mate's eyes were sad as he pulled back, motioning for her to sit. And so she did, shoulder brushing his starry fur.
"You always did have the intuition for it," he said, "perhaps you should have been marked with the Sight, instead of with the mark of the decisive. But... you are correct. The sentinels are needed again, to help a pack in Greece. They call themselves Mount Olympus' Calling, and they are being troubled by a bear. Not a problem for the sentinels, but for a pack inexperienced with that kind of a threat... well."
"The first test," she sighed, "almost like a trial by fire for the new ones."
"Everything will be fine," he assured her, placing a starry paw over her own, "you've been leading the last of the sentinels for a long time now. Almas will fight diligently beside you. Ryota will bring you all home. From what I have seen of your new recruits, they are strong and good of heart. The sentinels will survive another day, and the dogs of the Calling will be safe, too."
"You always were so rational," she smiled, leaning against him, "I wish you were here. And I wish the others were, too. I always imagined that the next sentinel battle would come with our pups by my side, and Anastasia... well. She'd be devastated to miss this, but the Call has taken them, and they will only return when the stars decide that they are ready."
"I will bring them home to you, Natti," Rodzianko pressed his nose to her cheek, "I promise you that."
"I know you're watching over them," she nuzzled into his starry pelt, missing his familiar scent, "but I ask that for this next chapter, you watch over this pack. Abakan and Ursus are strong and diligent. Anastasia is stalwart and determined. They will come home. This pack is still fresh, and I do not wish anything to happen to them."
"They will be safe. Elysium watches for you." He stood, then, and Erinat watched him as he pressed his nose to her cheek, and took a step back. They exchanged one last mournful glance, before he turned, and began to pad away into the snow, stars fading into the minuscule snowflakes that fell as the spring-time taiga tried to produce a pathetic amount of snow. Scuffling behind her made Erinat turn, to see Solnyshko standing in the threshold of the human place, yawning.
"Erinat?" She asked, voice sluggish with sleep. "What's going on? Who was that?"
"Just an old friend," Erinat said, getting to her paws. "Go back to sleep, it's late." The little husky pup nodded, allowing herself to be ushered back to her sleeping brothers. Erinat sat with them until she was sure she was asleep again, before she crossed the snowy campground to the den of her sentinels.
"Almas," she whispered, using her paw to push him awake. He sat up, eyes bleary, but quickly sharpening as he saw the solemn expression on her face. She didn't have to say anything for him to understand what she was trying to convey. He nodded, bowing his head, before he lifted it again with a slow exhale.
"So," he said finally, "the time has come."
