Humeโs Empiricism
Agrees with Locke and is against Descartes that knowledge would have to come through the senses
Questions how much of what we think we know is genuine knowledge
Radical empiricist. Goes too far.
Books: โA Treatise on Human Natureโ and โAn Inquiry Concerning Human Understandingโ
Everything in the mind originates in our sense of experience
Divides the contests of our minds into impressions and ideas
Impressions: Lively perceptions. When we see, hear, smell, love, hate, desire, etc. Happens during an experience
Ideas: Thinking about an impression after the experience
We truly know something certain about the world through our sense
We can verify our ideas by re experiencing certain impressions, or checking it with others
Empirical knowledge can be objectively confirmed
Hume thinks that our mind can join ideas that don't necessarily go together
To find the self, we must first identify the impression that produce the idea, then identify the actual objects that produce the impressions
The self is meaningless and is just a bundle of experiences
Causality doesnโt exist
For something to count as knowledge, we must be able to identify the outside, empirical source of the impressions that underline our ideas
Constant Conjunction: Cause is not immediately present in the initial impression of something, which made Hume suspicious since we need to do multiple experiments for stuff
Predicting the Future from the Past: Too many variables for things, so we canโt be 100% certain of anything
Probability, not Knowledge: Anything less than 100% certainty is not knowledge. No one can know anything certain about the future
Like the self, cause and effect is just a figment of our imaginations
Humberto Maturana is a neurobiologist who works with vision in humans and other animals.
Believed that the world was just out there, and is being percieved passively by a recieving mechanism
THe light that passes to our brains actually just produces a representation of the reality that may or may not resemble that reality
