Gender stereotypes have become an active part of day to day life. Boys cannot like pink and girls cannot be mathematical according to today's society. Clothing and appearance has played a key role in gender roles and stereotyping for a very long time. Do you believe that boy should be able to wear colors deemed “girlish” and girls should be able to have short hair?
From the moment you are born, you're given and blue or pink cap. You are the pink baby or the blue one. Now more than ever, parents believe that children should wear unisex clothing to enforce equality. When you were younger, you most likely had at shirt that read “trouble maker!” Or “too pretty for math”. These shirts made it seems that boys are never punished for their actions, girls only cared for their looks, and encouraged rape culture, violence against women, and the pay gap between genders.
Once children become older, bullies become a big factor. Though many people are okay with girls wearing clothes for boys and having a boy’s haircut, many people think it is disgusting or wrong for boy to have long hair or wear dress. Cole Edison says, “people are less willing to accept the violations of the male gender role than of the female role.” Many people report bullying along the lines of other children teasing their child because of the colors they like or wear.
Feminism means the advocacy of women's rights on the grounds of political, social, and economic equality to men. One big factor in this is appearance and how women choose to present themselves. Many people believe all women must wear makeup. Hamlet, by Shakespeare, says, “a woman without paint is like food without salt.” This is due to gender stereotypes. If a Man were to wear makeup, some people would find it discomforting and a taboo. If any person wants to cut their hair or wear makeup, why should someone stop them? Calvin Klein states “the best thing is to look natural, but it takes makeup to look natural.” That statement shows just how much society expects women to wear makeup and men to ogle at those women.
