I have lost track of time at this point. Whether it has been months, years, days, or merely hours I'm not sure. We had left in search of Oliver what seems to be an eternity ago…
“Hurry up Lee!” I was roused from my thoughts as Salem shouted for me. “You need to stop walking and hurry up, the more ground we cover the better. We need to find Oliver.”
“Honestly Salem, I'm confused. You say to stop, yet at the same time you say to come. What do you want up to do?” Keeping the smile off my face that was obvious in my words. Salem looked back at me and rolled his eyes. The least he could do is laugh! I felt as if I hadn't heard him laugh in ages. Well, at least the entire time we had been in this god-forsaken forest. All my efforts to relax him always failed. I mean, we don't even know if Oliver is alive.
We continued to trek through the woods, hour after hour, for what still seemed like longer than eternity. Finally we decided to settle down for the night, and I am extremely glad we did. Later on that night I heard a strange sound from in the trees. I thought about waking up May, but decided against it. I got up from the edge of the clearing where we were sleeping to go check it out. I looked through the leaves of a bushy shrub and found an oddly familiar pair of green eyes looking upon me. Slowly I recognized the sleek blue-gray fur, although it was covered in mud and twigs, and the nick on her right ear, as my family cat, Melon.
I was so excited then that I cried out with joy, “Oh Melon! I have missed you so much. You had me so worried.” Scooping her up, I brushed away some of the dirt and leaves covering her pelt.
Salem came up to us to see what all the commotion was, but all I could do was cry more happy tears, Melon was the miracle we had all been unknowingly waiting for. She gave us hope that there was a chance to find Oliver.
“Oh, Melon,” Salem whispered as he gently stroked Melon’s fur.
I sat down in the middle of the clearing with Melon while Salem went to go tell May the great news. Slowly but surely Melon was returning to her old self. I had cleaned her up with a little bit of stream water we had from the other day, and she looked almost back to normal. Melon was chasing a falling leaf when Salem and May got back.
Apparently Salem hadn't told May what the good news was because as they came into view, carrying some fresh berries and fish, May dropped what was in her hands and came barreling towards us. Her frizzy mess of carmel colored hair was all I saw before being hit by, what felt like, a billion pound truck going again trillion miles per nano second. Pardon my exaggerations, but it did feel like something big and fast was squeezing the life out of me and my poor defenseless cat, until you get on Melon’s bad side… Then she has claws of fury that used to even scare the toughest dogs away. I felt as if I could see my life flashing before my eyes she was squeezing so hard. So hard…
I tried telling her she was squeezing us to hard, I really did. I presume she didn't hear me, so I took it as a good enough reason and stomped on her toe. Don't judge, it worked.
I sat Melon down reluctantly and went to help Salem find some food and cook breakfast. Immediately after I had put Melon down she had ran off, but I wasn’t worried. Melon has always been an outdoor cat and knew how to defend herself.
Salem, May and I went off through the woods looking for anything edible. On average, if May or I saw a bird or something of that nature we would quietly tell Salem so he could shoot it down with his makeshift bow. Since we started our search I have gone vegetarian. I will not have anything to do with the cooking, touching, killing or eating of the animals we find. I only help with the finding to keep my friends alive. Unless it was fish, they don’t have the same kind of innocence about them, but that doesn’t matter because we have no way to catch any, anyways.
After about an hour of walking around our temporary campground we had found a basket’s worth of different berries and leaves (all known to be edible) and Salem had killed 2 squirrels. One for each him and May.
(Oh, Haha..)
