I mean think about it. Sure, he made a lot of mistakes, but he realized that and shaped up in the end. He was actually very sensible, creating the very idea of borders, which are very important. The moorland cats just didn't understand because it was so unexpected and new. I'd bet that if the story was in his point of view and not Gray Wings, he wouldn't get bashed as much. I think he gets less credit than he deserves.
