The Exile wrote:this wasn't how it was supposed
to be.
"you can't seriously be accusing
gloomfeather, can you?!"
this was all wrong. all of it. it
wasn't supposed to be like this.
"you say that, but who else is
likely to stuff deathberries into
the belly of a mouse?"
"well, what if it was you? an
apprentice isn't strong enough
to take down a full grown cat--
maybe you tried to frame gloom-
-feather!"
"why would i want sheepface
dead, mousebrain?!"
"you two calm down, we'll get
nowhere by--"
"we all know gloomfeather is
jealous! we all know he wants
sheepface out of the picture!"
that's not true.
as the clan argued, leopard-
-dusk's mouth began to become
dry, his tongue sticking to the
roof of his mouth as he opened
his maw, watching with pain
on his face.
gloomfeather sat quietly, saying
not a word, his gaze cast down
at the clearing floor. of course
he didn't hate sheepface. leopard-
-dusk knew that. no one loved
sheepface more than his mentor.
so say something, gloomfeather.
tell them it wasn't you!
a look of pain washed over sheep-
-face's expression, and he bared
his teeth in anger and sorrow. "so
you--this is what you think of me?
do you really hate it that you can't
hear so badly, that you attempted
to kill me?"
wetfur pressed against the young
tom, his gaze both accusing and
confused as he glared at the
silent medicine cat.
it wasn't you!
"answer me, gloomfeather--" the
tom's broken voice came once
more, then again, cracking with
sorrow and fury. "answer me!!!"
all the cats of the clan stared
at their medicine cat, fear and
betrayal in their eyes. it made
pain bubble in leopard-dusk's
throat, and for a moment,
there was no sound, before the
medicine cat opened his maw,
the defeat on his features clear.
"it was--"
"it wasn't him!"
i'm sorry, gloomfeather.
every cat looked up in surprise
and confusion, their attention
turning to leopard-dusk, and the
spotted tom's heart burned. his
throat was dry, and his voice
came rasped and weak as his
gaze met gloomfeather's, and
he stared his brother in the eyes.
"it was me. it wasn't gloom-
-feather, it was me."
a shudder ran through the crowd,
and swiftstar's eyes narrowed in
disbelief.
gloomfeather's eyes reflected
his shattered heart, and leopard-
-dusk turned away, before looking
to sheepface, disgust and hatred
burning in his usually bright,
honey-brown eyes. wetfur stepped
forward, as if to offer protection
to the bigger tom, but the spotted
killer did not move.
"let me tell you one thing, you
fool--gloomfeather feels like a
father to you. he raised you, took
care of you, taught you and suffered
in silence when you took everything
from him! i had to watch as you
made my brother ache, day after
day after day, and now you have
the audacity to accuse him of
hating you?! he loves you, you
mouse-brain! he wants and has
always wanted you to succeed, and
all you did was make him hurt!"
leopard-dusk's voice broke, and
tears began to stream down his muzzle
as he bared his teeth, those around
him stepping back. "to watch him
suffer so--i can never forgive you
for that!"
for a moment, there was silence.
"leopard-dusk. my brother."
the spotted tom turned, then, terror
flashing on his features as he looked
to gloomfeather, whose expression
was twisted with sorrow.
"if i'd known how badly watching me
was making you hurt, i would've--"
"it's not your fault!" leopard-dusk
retorted, and gloomfeather's eyes
widened as he watched his littermate,
the tom he'd known so well to be
so caring and so kind, hunched over,
turned away, pain in his eyes.
"i just wanted you to be happy."
there was another moment of
silence, before swiftstar stepped
forward, his expression grim.
"leopard-dusk. you have tried to
kill one of our warriors. we cannot
let that go without punishment."
understanding flickered across
leopard-dusk's features, and he
closed his eyes as he waited for
the dreaded words he would surely
hear.
"wait! please, swiftstar!"
when the spotted tom raised his
head, gloomfeather stood between
he and the leader, his eyes wide
as he placed one paw over his
littermate.
"gloomfeather, what are you--"
"please, hear me out! leopard-dusk
is young and emotional, and he's
been carrying so much-- please,
be merciful! he knows what he
has done and he recognizes that
it was wrong--so please, please
don't send him away!" gloom-
-feather's voice cracked with
sorrow, growing rasped, and tears
beaded at the edges of his optics
as he pleaded.
"he- he and sheepface are my
family, swiftstar. they're the only
things that i have left. i beg of
you!"
the leader watched with wide
eyes, and wetfur gave a soft hiss,
but leopard-dusk looked away
and caught sight of sheepface's
somber, torn expression. finally,
swiftstar's gaze turned to the
medicine cat apprentice, and,
as he set his jaw, he meowed,
"sheepface is the victim, here.
whatever is to be done, let him
choose."
all cats looked to the young white
tom, and leopard-dusk's heart
stilled, despair gripping it and
choking the breath from him as
sheepface opened his maw.
"...i want-"
--------------------------------
leopard-dusk was allowed to
stay with thunderclan. the path he
walked was hard, and always
filled with doubt. for many moons,
the clan would avoid him, and
he felt like a stranger when they
whispered about him behind his
back. he felt like an alien, and
many days he would consider
running away, leaving under the
cover of night.
then, he would feel gloomfeather
rest his tail across his shoulders,
ad the reassuring gesture would
soothe his soul.
gloomfeather and sheepface
began to mend their relationship,
after that. slowly, they began to
open up, and shared their insecurities.
they comforted one another during
the silence, and, when it passed,
they were stronger for it.
eventually, leopard-dusk would be
accepted back into the clan. he
would always be estranged, and
he would never truly belong, but it
was enough to feel the bodies sleeping
around him not pull away, and to be
able to eat with his clanmates. one
greenleaf, he would even meet a she-
-cat that he would love dearly, and
they would father two kits together.
he would die protecting the territory
from a loose dog, and gloomfeather
would pass away two days later.
sheepface would always say it was
because gloomfeather would have
followed his brother anywhere.
one of leopard-dusk's kits would
become sheepface's apprentice,
and he would treasure her as though
she were his own daughter, just
as gloomfeather had been a father
to him. wetfur would always stop by
to play with her, and many cats would
joke that they seemed like a couple
and their kit.
by the time leopard-dusk's kits received
their warrior names, very few would
remember the terrible crime that the
spotted tom had committed.
congratulations, thunderclan! you have
successful found the killer! things
were hard, but the future is looking
up for the new generation. already,
the wounds have begun to heal.
