it had been a long time since sheepface
had heard from starclan.
he had always had a better affinity for
hearing the whispers of the ancestors
than gloomfeather did--sometimes, the
stars would tell him that talking to the
older medicine cat was like talking to
a cat with ears full of wax. apparently,
gloomfeather had been very sharp as an
apprentice, had shown great promise,
but when his mentor had died the gift
had been lost. perhaps, by some means,
sheepface had stolen that blessing from
him. perhaps gloomfeather's faith had
faltered.
perhaps he was lost, searching for
answers.
whatever the reason, starclan had chosen
to speak instead to sheepface, so that the
connection would not be lost should gloom-
-feather wander from their gazes completely.
it was a great weight to carry, and, though
sheepface did not think his senior was jeal-
-ous of that burden, sometimes he could feel
the older tom's gaze on his back, filled with
longing.
either way, sheepface could no longer hear
their voices. gloomfeather was not alone in
that.
these thoughts plagued the white tom's mind
as he slowly moved through the day. counting
the herb stock was difficult. he couldn't seem
to concentrate when organizing. he wandered
off while trying to gather moss. finally, he'd
been told to get something to eat, and to rest,
and he did not argue. he couldn't fight the
gentle, authoritative meow of the cat telling
him to relax.
he'd chosen a plump vole, the smell of it
making his mouth water, it had been freshly
killed, and when he'd been caught staring at
its stuffed body, he'd been told cheerfully to
go right ahead. it was a wonder for a cat to
give up such a tasty looking morsel. sheepface
mewed his thanks, and took it to his own corner
to lie in the shade. this newleaf had been hot,
and the warm rays of sun had been making
everyone feel terribly lazy. the medicine cat
apprentice was not immune to that. relishing in
the coolness of the shade, the cold stone cooling
his belly, sheepface opened his maw to take a
bite of his lunch.
"sheepface." came a sudden mew, interrupting
him.
the tom looked up, blinking with annoyance.
why was he being disturbed at a time like this?
the tom had a mind to scold whomever he found
standing there, but the look of genuine worry
on his clanmate's face stopped him in his tracks.
he swallowed his fierce words, and his face soft-
-ened as he responded.
"...what's wrong?"
"that's what i should be asking. i know you were
sitting down to eat, but i... i saw you earlier. you
were fumbling about, and i was worried. are you
feeling unwell? is something on your mind?" the
cat meowed softly.
sheepface glanced away, the subject bringing an
end to his appetite, and he pushed his prey aside.
he was strong by himself. he was independent. he
could fight on his own.
but he also couldn't deny that, for once, even he
was extremely unsettled by the silence in the sky
above.
"i can't hear them."
"hear who?"
"i..."
"here. let's take a walk."
sheepface nodded, and followed without a second
glance at his prey, forgetting all about the swollen
morsel. it was only later when the apprentices
found the corpse and it had cooled into crowfood
did anyone notice that its flesh was plump because
of the deathberries stuffed into it's body.
someone had tried to kill sheepface.
watch out, thunderclan! your guard's concern
for their clanmate has saved your medicine cat
apprentice, but you may not be so lucky next
time!
