Splott made an error at step 4 of solving the equation. Instead of subtracting 4 from each side to cancel out the 4 from one side and move it to the other side, he added 4 to each side. Fizzle made an error at step 6 of solving his equation. He added 5 to each side rather than dividing it by -5 to each side to cancel out the multiplication of -5 attached to the variable x.
2. 9x + 4 = y
3. 9x + 4 = y is a function because for every x value there is one and only one distinct y value.
4. To find f(3) of y = 9x + 4, change the y to f(x) as they have the same meaning, and this would give f(x) = 9x + 4. Replace all the x with 3 because x has been declared equal to 3. This would give us f(3) = 9(3) + 4 and which then you must solve. Using order of operations, multiply out 9 and 3 which would result with f(3) = 27 + 4 and then add 24 + 7 which then leaves us with the final result of f(3) = 31.
5. To find f-1(3), change f-1(3) to y as they have the same meaning, and this would give y = 9x + 4. Then switch the x and y variable positions with each other which would look like this, x = 9y + 4. Then solve for y by subtracting 4 from both sides of the equation and then dividing both sides of the equation by 9 which would result in this x - 4/9=y. Replace the x with 3 and solve the equation by using the order of operations, which would make us add 3 and 4 which is 7 and that over 9 gives us the fraction 7/9 which is the inverse of f(3).
6. Creating a new function, h(x) = 2x + 3 and using the recent function, f(x) = 9x + 4, to determine whether f(h(x)) and h(f(x)) will always result in the same number, x = 2. For f(h(x)) h(x) will replace the x in f(x) and it will look like f(h(x)) = 9(2x + 4) + 3. Simplify the equation by distributing the multiplication of 9 and then simplify the equation which would end up looking like this f(h(x)) = 18x + 39 and substitute the x with 2 and solve the equation using the order operations, which would end up with f(h(x)) = 75. Using the similar process, to find h(f(x)), f(x) will replace the x in h(x) which would result in h(f(x)) = 2(9x + 4) + 4. Simplify the equation by distributing the multiplication of 2 and the simplify the equation which would end up looking like this h(f(x)) = 18x + 12. Substituting the x with 2 and and simplifying the equation by distributing the multiplication of 2 and then simplifying the equation as much as possible and the solve using order of operations would lead to h(f(x)) = 48. This in the end means that f(h(x) = 75 and that h(f(x)) = 48 which are not equal leads us to conclude that f(h(x)) and h(f(x)) will not always result in the same number.
{oops...this was something for algebra 2 honors and I had to explain it, I'm taking it online sooo....yeah, hehe, don't mind it}
