It was a quiet New-leaf night that dawned upon the Clan as they said good night to each other and took to their nests. Fernwillow was positioned at guard that night, sitting happily in the dark warmth as a cool breeze ruffled her fur. She dared to lick her paw, looking down for a moment, and washed her ears. After all, a she-cat needs to look proper. As she did so, she noticed a curious smell, and was greeted by the sight of one of her clan-mates. She smiled a little, and stood. "What are you doing out at this hour?" She mewed, and the other cat simply pushed some prey toward her. "For all your good work, Fernwillow. We appreciate you so."

The next morning, Fernwillow was found dead, the half eaten prey, full of deatberries, by her jaws.

Dawnpaw woke up happily next morning. No one else seemed to be up at the time so this was a perfect time for to stock up on herbs. The apprentice walked out of the medicine cat's dent to find the dead body of her clanmate. "Fe-ernwillow is... dead!" The apprentice wailed. then bent down to the prey with the red berries, death berries. "Some one poisoned her!"

Specklepaw's eyes opened suddenly when she heard Dawnpaw. She got to her paws, alarmed and walked out of the apprentice den. "What's going," she started to ask, but stopped in the middle of the question when she saw Fernwillow. "Fernwillow?" she meowed quietly and walked over slowly. She looked at the body of the she-cat and then at Dawnpaw. "What happened?" she asked, sadly.

Pigeonwing burst out of the warriors den when he heard Dawnpaw's wail. "Fernwillow?" he called. His half-asleep mind only heard parts of the apprentice's horrified wail. Then he saw the body. "Fernwillow!" he cried. He ran up to see the she-cat, half-chewed deathberries in her jaws. He was shocked.
What if he was next? What if Seedpaw was next? What if the entire clan was killed? Pigeonwing stumbled backwards and tripped on the prey. "Oof!" he grunted as he fell to the ground. He didn't get back up. "Fernwillow..." He had always known she liked him, even though he didn't feel that way to her, but he didn't want he to die!
Who would have access to the deathberries without waking the medicine cat? "Dawnpaw.." he growled. "What happened?"
