You wrapped a single hand around the stone rod, gripping it tightly before rapidly ripping it out. A single, agonizing screech, echoed through the woods a couple of times.
As quickly as you pulled the weapon out, the bird hurried to groom its wound, attempting to cover up the punctured area with the surrounding feathers, as well as licking up any droplet of crimson blood that stained the wing.

You spoke in a huffy tone, not sure if the avian, whose face was currently buried in its wounded wing, could even hear you. However, it soon replied as well:

Yeah, yeah, thanks for helping me out.

The words muttered in your head. Though you indeed could hear very blatant reluctance, there was also a layer of true gratitude there as well - which, looking at their usually sarcastic and mocking personality, truly meant a lot. This alone was enough to bring a slight bend in the corners of your mouth, resulting in a somewhat awkward looking smile - but it was nonetheless still a real smile.

What's your name?

You bluntly blurted out the question, which also very much brought the bird out of its grooming process.
Somewhat confused, as well as caught of guard, the bird tilted its head to the side as it tried to think of an answer.

My... name? Well, what brought that on all of a sudden?

Just curious.

Again, a moment of silence lingered in the air as the small animal thought. Eventually though, there was an answer:

Well, I don't exactly have a name. You can gimme one if ya want. Just don't call me "Sparkle Poopy-pants" or some other stupid name, alright? Or else I will kill you.

Settling down on the damp grass, you stared at the small gray bird, as you rigorously thought of a fitting, but also uninsulting name for them. It had to be nice, and roll off the tongue, but also sound powerful.. definitely not a total mouthful, but also something not too short...
You eventually come up with a couple of names that each matched the criteria perfectly - now you just had to choose which one to give to the bird.

You suggest the name to the bird, who was impatiently waiting up to that point. A satisfied look began to form on their face as they heard the name.

Avis... yeah, I think I like it!

They chirped happily.
The newly-named Avis then continued to hop around in a strange pattern, wings outstretched, obviously attempting to flutter into the air - however, their injured wing seemed to be lacking in strength after being wounded.
Eventually, after a couple minutes of trial-and-failure, Avis out a heavy sigh, signifying that they had given up.

I meant for that to be cool.

The voice in your head had a very disappointed tone to it - however, just as you heard the last word, you could start to feel multiple tiny claws digging into your back like needles. Swerving your head around, your eyes met those of the bird, who had just managed to climb onto your back, and was now trying to make himself comfortable on your shoulder.

If you keep looking at me like that, then I won't say the super-important information I was originally going to tell you.

Avis huffed, his usually sense of sarcasm already returned. But, despite this, his mysterious, but also somewhat comedic words began to intrigue you. Super-important information?

Please tell me this information.

You pleaded the avian, who had already rolled his eyes at your begging.

Don't freak out, ya idiot.

The voice inside your head mocked and teased you, though you had already grown used to it. Your eyes were wide with interest, however - was this maybe the key to finally escaping this strange, creepy world?
As if reading your mind, Avis let out a snicker.

Yup, you're finally gonna learn how to escape this world, buddy. I mean, all you gotta do is try to not get killed by either them, or one the traps they've set up, all while trying to snatch a couple of crazy artifacts.

The words were shot into your head so rapidly, that you barely even had time to process it all. Traps? Artifacts? Them?
