dovesky tucked her brood close to her stomach, all five of her offspring squirming as they reached for the warm haven of her tummy. willowkit, with her dappled pelt and dazzling turquoise eyes, and flowerkit, the dainty tom who shied away from larger cats. heavykit, the largest of the litter, who held himself with a sort of haughty pride that dovesky was sure would carry him well into warriorhood. and bubblekit, the silver molly who gazed at everything with a sense of wonder. but finally, finchkit, the molly who resembled dovesky the most and who carried the name of her deceased kin, finchfin. across the nursery, shrikethorn, too, gazed down at her young with wide eyes and pricked ears. they were the most amazing things in the entire universe, she was sure. twitchkit, the fluffball of a kit who had a nervous tic, though shrikethorn loved her all the same, and treekit, the rather large tom with long legs and curious eyes. they kept their kits close to their hearts because the predator had struck again, this time taking two lives — both blackpanther and cherryfang, having, evidently, been out on a walk, had been killed, their bodies in the same condition that troutwhisker's had been. and so the queens were shrouding their offspring from the horrors of the world, and mentors were training their apprentices just outside the camp entrance, and a pair of new warriors were perched outside the camp, guarding against the danger.

on the other side of camp, geckoflight twitched his ears towards the forest, mudflank at his shoulder. geckoflight had been invited to join the clan just days before, and had information about the predator; it was weasel-like, and larger than the average cat, choosing to lurk in trees rather than hunt its prey on the ground. mudflank, on the other had, had received a dream from starclan, telling him to travel to the moor. he had walked for many days and nights, hailing from the beach, where he slept in a cave made by the steady beat of waves, waiting for high tide to wash away and leave behind small minnows that were flung onto the sand. it was easy prey, and mudflank mastered the technique of patience after a short while. his pink nose, bright in the dark splash of brown on his face, twitched in the direction of the faint outline of trees. a set of four patrols had gone their separate ways across the territory, for either border watch or hunting.

the apprentices, having returned from their early training that was just outside the camp, huddled together at the center of camp, sharing tongues and gossip. "what do you think it is?" magpiepaw inquired, his ears laid back as canarypaw's tongue rasped over the crown of his head. "well, flurrywind thinks that — " warblerpaw began, but was interrupted by a chorus of voices; "we know what flurrywind thinks!" magpiepaw's voice was the loudest, though bearpaw, skunkpaw, canarypaw, and sheeppaw also echoed the phrase. warblerpaw flushed a deep scarlet, indignance flashing in her eyes. "he knows what he's talking about!" she protested, huffing. okay, so she maybe had a teeny tiny, very small crush on flurrywind, but that definitely wasn't why she thought his opinion was right. he was a warrior, and he knew more than she did. that was why, of course. but, in all honestly, flurrywind had no idea what the predator was, either. he had made guesses, said everything from pumas to wolves, but none matched the description of the predator that they now had. the clan was lost, grasping at straws, praying to starclan that their families remained safe.

honeypaw and beepaw, while they were close enough to the other apprentices in the group, stayed closer to one another than the rest of the felines. they had been brought into this clan after explaining that their mother had been killed by a thing, and they themselves had barely escaped it's grasp. it seemed the same creature was plaguing mistclan now, picking off their cats one by one.

It had come to him in a dream, Starclan's last attempt to redeem any part of Wolfclan. Birchstar had been given a message, though he still wasn't sure why they'd chosen him in particular. The cats with the starry pelts, his ancestors had come to tell him that they'd been abandoned under Bearstar's leadership, but that hope hadn't been lost yet. They wished for him to start anew, and to save as many Wolfclan cats as possible, to bring them into the light of Sunclan. And for this, he was given the title of Birchstar, with nine lives to match it.

Now he stood in what he knew would be their camp, under the great oak tree. It was time Birchstar got going though, if he wished to fulfill their wishes. He needed to travel to the Moonpool to commune with Starclan once more, and so without hesitation the tom sprung up to make his way south towards the mountains.

Past many trees, open clearings, and even part of the meadow, Birchstar padded off. He jumped along the small rocks over the stream to avoid swimming, nimbly crossing over the fallen trees the twolegs had yet to take care of after a storm some time ago. As he approached the mountain, the tom could feel a smile tugging at his maw, this was what he had been waiting for in his journey to find the new territory.

Birchstar made his way into the cave, descending into the flattened area that housed the Moonpool. His jaw remained slightly open as he padded up to the water, lying down and quickly lapping up a bit of water, before closing his eyes. It was strange for him, falling asleep to dream of his ancestors, and admittedly he probably seemed a little awkward.

"Thank you for the opportunity you've given me, I promise I won't let you down. I... I wish for a medicine cat, to assist and heal my clan, and to draw us closer to you."

while on patrol, neritevine, darkpelt, batshriek, mousewhisker, and quailstep encounter a warrior.
while hunting, cormorantstrike, dunetail, lemmingfur, and cypressfang catch one rabbit and one gyrfalcon.
while hunting, mudskip unfortunately catches nothing!
dunetail fails to become pregnant. she and her mate will have to wait another moon.*
quailstep becomes pregnant.
elkkit becomes an apprentice: elkpaw.
elkpaw, larkpaw, crowpaw, and sootpaw, learn the tracking skill.
*i'm extrapolating a bit here, and relying on google, but in humans, women can only ovulate (and therefore become pregnant) again after 28 days after giving birth, and even then, only when they aren't breastfeeding (if anyone wants actual medical advice concerning this though, please get an actual medical person to give it). as cats have no alternative to breastfeeding it's very unlikely a cat could go straight from giving birth to being pregnant again.

as leopardrunner and craggstar return from their hunt, a rustling in the bushes in front
of them startles them. holding leopardrunner back with his tail and calls, "who
goes there?" with another rustle from the bushes, a ragged tomcat, and a much younger
looking she-cat emerge. the she-cat looks frightened, ears pressed back against her head, nicks in each
of them. the tom is grizzled, his lips pulled back in a snarl, scars crisscrossing his ragged pelt. his
yellowed teeth, glisten in the shadow of the moon, and craggstar lowers his hackles. "my
apologies, travelers. i am craggstar, leader of the newly founded honestclan." he bellows,
dipping his head. leopardrunner echoes his leader, dipping his head as well. "and i am
leopardrunner, deputy of honestclan. do you two need refuge...?" he offers, on behalf craggstar.
the tom lowers his defenses, and the she-cat looks a little less scared. "you need a shaman.
i'll help." he said, swishing away from the direction he appeared, his companion, after resting her
gaze on leopardrunner, dashes after him. "uh..?" the leader starts, and hears
from the bushes, "follow me, craggstar." hisses the tom from the trees, and
both clan cats follow.

in a clearing, a little ways away, both twigpelt and briarhop had made camp. they introduced themselves
on the way, with briarhop excitedly spinning a tale of how she and her father escaped from their abusers
in another clan. between every pause in her sentence, she took a glance a leopardrunner, leaving craggstar
staring at his paws crossly. following after twigpelt underground, craggstar took one last glance back at
briarhop and leopardrunner. the new she-cat was getting awfully close.

once a little way underground, twigpelt speaks up. "do you...like my daughter craggstar?"
he inquires, curiosity evident in his voice. flustered, craggstar shakes his head. remembering that the
other tom couldn't see him, he says, "no, n-no sir." the shaman laughs
a little ahead of him, and let out a thoughtful noise. "right. leopardrunner?"
he inquires again, and the leader goes silent.

the rest of the journey through the cave is in silence, and craggstar realizes that this tom could very well
be leading him to his death! now apprehensive, the leader slows his pawsteps, and twigpelt makes a 'tsk'
noise ahead. "we are almost there. i have no intentions to kill you," he says.
twigpelt smirks as craggstar lets out a small breath of relief. "if i wanted to i would have
done so already." craggstar tenses again.

soon, there's an opening, and early dawn light spilling into a cavern. pools of water litter the cavern
floor, all of them appearing to have some sort of haze of them. "welcome to shaman's
meet. not all medicine cats meet here, but ah - i only will speak with our ancestors here."
twigpelt explains while the leader frowns, eyes illuminated by the sparkling dawn. "i understand,
you may have your own holy grounds, and i have mine." craggstar goes silent. the toms weave between
pools of whispering, roaring, promises of something greater. twigpelt stops at one, and sits, wrapping his thick tail
around his paws. he begins to whisper in ancient tongues. craggstar struggles to understand before the shaman begins
speaking normally. "i call upon each and every life lost in battle, sickness, kit-birthing, homicide, and
time to look down upon this young soul, looking to start anew. i give him my ancient blessing and i beg that you give him
yours, great ones, and give him the guidance he needs," as he is speaking, twigpelt dips the tip of his right paw
into the water, and presses it to is forehead. a surge of power rushes through the tom, light spilling from his eyes, nostrils
and mouth. a symbol appears on his forehead, a line with a single black dot above it. "mercy, hm?
perhaps you will be a good leader afterall."

Frozenstar watched his new deputy as she easily climbed to the camp. The she-cat was a fast climber, perfect for what he needed. Shadowfang sat down once she reached the camp and licked her paw. She was hungry "Hey, Frozenstar, I'm going hunting" she announced with little to no formality. This bothered Frozenstar. He was the leader so he deserved some respect but before he could say anything she ran off to go hunting. Frozenstar was even more annoyed and decided to cool off by patroling

Branchstar sighed as she left the moonpool, and headed home. Like the last time she had come here, her paws hurt and ached. It was getting dark, so she laid down on the rocky floor of her den, and closed her eyes. Not long after, the sound of scrambling awoke Branchstar and she got up to see what was making such a noise. She sniffed the air for the scent of a cat, but it was too windy to make out anything. When she turned around, she slightly jumped. The silhouette of a large cat sat in her den, waiting. “Who are you?” Branchstar questioned, trying to sound rough. The silhouette stepped forward into the moonlight. A large tom towered over Branchstar, his eyes calm and steady.

“Swallowcloud.” The cat said, as he sat back down again to start licking his paw. “Who might you be?”
“Branchstar. Leader of...” she realised she hadn’t even thought of a name for her clan yet. She nervously looked around, hesitating, until her eyes wandered to shaft behind Swallowcloud. “Leader of ShaftClan.” He looked at her, almost in surprise.
“Leader? You look younger than me.”
“Well, then, how old are you?”
“Thirty-seven moons. You?” Swallowcloud smirked as Branchstar murmured quietly,
“Thirty-four.” Swallowcloud held back a laugh.
“Excuse me, what did you say? I couldn’t hear.” A bit louder this time, Branchstar looked away as she repeated,
“Thirty-four. I’m thirty-four moons old.” Swallowcloud didn’t stop himself from laughing.
“So. You’re a leader of a clan and you’re younger than me? Welp, I can’t wait to watch ‘ShaftClan’ fall to pieces,” Branchstar opened her mouth, ready to say something back, but Swallowcloud interrupted her. “Sorry — let me say that again. I can’t wait to watch ShaftClan fall to pieces.. with me in it.” He gave a small wink.
“Wait — you’re the one StarClan sent?” Branchstar asked, almost in a whisper.
“Sure am. Meet your new medicine cat, me.” His mouth became an almost smug grin, as he raised his eyebrows.
“Well then, Mr. ‘I’m-so-amazingly-talented’, why don’t you climb to the top of this mountain to get some moss for my den?” He nodded and jumped up some rocks, then disappeared from view. Branchstar smiled, and went back to her den to fall asleep.

When Branchstar woke up, she was surrounded by moss. Just enough to make it soft, but not too much that it was uncomfortable. She used her paws to cover up the patch she had been sleeping in, and walked outside of her den. She noticed to her right that there were a few logs and sticks piled on top of each-other, forming a rectangle. Inside the rectangle was Swallowcloud, asleep, possibly from tiredness. Branchstar guessed that this was now his den, and she smiled to herself. She supposed Swallowcloud liked doing stuff by himself.
