"So, any particular reason you asked us on patrol?" Leafgaze asked the brown tabby walking beside her. Barkfang was the newest addition to the clan, and unlike everyone else, she had not been part of the clan before its collapse.

"What, do I have to have a reason to hang out with my fellow jills?" Barkfang flicked her ear.

"Well, no, but-"

"Then stop thinking and tell me where the best spot to catch prey is, I'm starving!"

Mousepetal spoke up from where she was walking behind the other two. "You know you can't eat until everyone's back at camp, right?"

Barkfang paused. "Oh. Yeah, yeah I remember. Man, there's so many rules here! I mean don't get me wrong, I know what happens when there's no rules, but c'mon, lighten up a bit, y'know?"

Leafgaze glanced around the area. A tree-dotted hill lay not too far from their location. "There." she nodded to the hill. "We haven't been to that foresthill for a while. It'll probably be full of mice and birds."

A silence stretched around the group as they walked. Barkfang looked over at Leafgaze, considering. "...Bet I catch more than you."

"Pfft, you wish." Leafgaze rolled her eyes.

"No, I'm serious, I'll catch way more than you, Clean-tail."

Mousepetal didn't know where this was headed, but regardless, she knew she wouldn't like it. "Girls, please, can we not do this?"

Leafgaze totally ignored her. "I could catch the whole forest before you've even scented one piece!"

"Not if I get there first!"

And with those words, Barkfang sprung away, sprinting full pelt in the direction of the hill. Leafgaze wasn't far behind, determined to catch up. They made it to the hill and countless birds flew in all different directions, as absolutely everything edible in the forest quickly retreated at the disturbance of the two cats.

Mousepetal was left standing exactly where she was before, making a mental note to never put Leafgaze and Barkfang on the same patrol ever again.

"Finchstrike?! Why Finchstrike?! She's weird!" Thunderleap scoffed.
"Shush!!" Cinderfang hissed.
"Oh calm down, we're almost to the sands, no one can hear us." Thunderleap quicked his steps a little bit to keep up with Cinderfang's massive strides. "But seriously," he continued, "Why Finchstrike? I've never had a nice conversation with her in my life!"
"I don't know..." Cinderfang looked down and smiled, "There's just something about her. She's rough on the outside, but there's a side to her that she doesn't show. I've only seen it a couple of times, but it's beautiful. And I think she's beautiful."
"BLAGH!" Thunderleap fake gagged. "That's like the grossest thing you've ever said."
"You're just too young, you wouldn't understand." Cinderfang grinned and playfully shoved into his shoulder.
"Fox-dung! I'm only a few moons younger than you." Thunderleap jumped on Cinderfang's back in reciprocation, trying, and failing to tackle the huge tom. Cinderfang shook him off and batted at his face.
"C'mon," Cinderfang turned away, "we gotta actually catch some food."

Carrotstar sighed, meowing, "Chestnutwish is as you have suspected. She is Ravenwish's littermate." Thistletuft sighed, "Well, we can't blame her for what her brother did in the past, can we?" Dappledawn nodded firmly, "She is her own cat. Ravenwish did many bad things under Stormfang's so-called guidance, but she seems nothing of the sort." Hollyspots suggested, "We should keep an eye on her nonetheless. We can't have Sticklenose, Icyclaw, Winterflame, or Magpiepelt hear of this." Leafwhisker, who had been silent for the entire time, nodded, adding his own two cents to the conversation, "Especially Sticklenose. He has a fiery temper, and he was Silkfeather's brother after all. We can't let him lashing out at poor Chesnutwish without just cause." "Agreed," Carrotstar nodded, dismissing the meeting.

Oh StarClan, he prayed silently, please show me a way to deal with this.

<At the medicine cats' chamber>

Dappledawn made her way back to the chamber she shared with her fellow medicine cats, her twisted paw throbbing as usual as it hit cold stone. The calico she-cat nodded in greeting to Sandripple and Comfreyleaf before heading to the back, where her nest was. Sandripple and Comfreyleaf looked at each other, puzzled, before the former followed her inside, asking, "Are you all right, Dappledawn?" Dappledawn had sat down on her nest, tail covering her paws neatly. The she-cat looked up and replied, nodding slowly, "I'm fine. I'm always fine. You know that." Sandripple frowned, shaking his head, mewing, "That isn't an answer I'm taking, Dappledawn. What is wrong?" The calico she-cat restated firmly, meowing, "I am fine, and that's that. I just wanted to head to sleep early tonight, seeing as you two have finished sorting the herbs in my stead." Comfreyleaf protested, appearing at Sandripple's side, "But Dappledawn, you aren't okay, are you? Let us help you!" Dappledawn looked away, admitting and letting her guard down, "I feel like... I did not have time to properly mourn for him, you know. I still miss him, two moons later. He speaks to me in my dreams, yes. But to wake up and not see him?" She sighed, mumbling, "Never mind," and took her leave, not meeting her fellow medicine cats' gazes. Comfreyleaf murmured, "watching the figure of their head medicine cat disappear down the dark Cave Path, "We need to do something about her." Sandripple nodded, "Definitely."
