Tribe of Sinking Willows
Number of Cats: 8 (Mollies: 4, Toms: 4)
Servings: 3
Moss' paws sank into mud as she pushed after Leafteller who, much unlike her, seemed comfortable and confident here, showing no fear of getting stuck in the sticky, clinging mass that threatened to swallow the cats alive. But still she pushed on and on. For her kits and for her mate. Soon enough the pair came across a group of three cats huddled together on a large fallen branch, the larger tom and molly comforting a small kit between them.
Moss lumbered forward like a blind badger as she rushed to her kits, yelling their names. "Lucas! Amelia! Philip!"
Leafteller shook her head slowly, though she was clearly happy to see the family together, following more gracefully.
"Where's your father? And your other two younger siblings?" She asked the group, fiercely licking each one. The adult-looking male looked at his mother with hopelessness and grief in his eyes. "We don't know. We didn't see what happened."
"No doubt they're dead if they got into a tussle with alligators." The healer noted, perhaps causing the overwhelming silence that followed. She didn't wait long before breaking it. "We, the Tribe of Sinking Willows live here. It's not safe here, but if you wish I could show you to the camp. It'll be safe there. You may join if you wish."
...
When the healer returned, a family of four following along, each one muddy to a degree, the others were back at camp, the siblings chatting with the lone Tree-Dweller as he ate. Leafteller was happy to see them getting along. She knew none of them truly liked it here, but she was sure things would change soon! And two of these cats seemed to be old enough yet young enough to be to-bes at that! The cats already gathered seemed to have scarcely noticed her return until she made herself heard. "We have new members!" She announced, the family huddled together, whispering to each other, unsure about this.
Flame, Sunset and Sky looked over, clearly curious as to who could possibly be coming to join, seeing the, admittedly, sorry-looking cats like they had once been wandering around clumsily as they struggled even moons later to get used to this place. But it wasn't quite as difficult lately.
"So, what's the plan?" Flame asked first, sitting up and raising his tail almost proudly with his chest puffed. Sky looked at him, holding back a small laugh of amusement while her brother merely smiled, shaking his head slowly.
"Well, we'll hear them out first. So?" Leafteller looked at the group, hoping they would agree to join rather than requesting escort to the edge.
The family seemed to come to an agreement, each nodding save for the distracted kit that was playing with his sister's tail. And so, the mother spoke, pulling the youngest closer to herself.
"We've decided to stay here. We want to give Philip some time to grow and get stronger so we don't lose him like his littermates on our travels. In that time, we will help your tribe, as you put it, in any way we can."
Her ears pulled back at the sudden kit-like excitement, bouncing in circles that Leafteller was expressing.
"Get used to it." Sky chuckled, Flame clearly holding back his own laughter unlike Sunset that seemed to be all but writhing on the ground with laughter.
Once the Healer was done, she allowed the newcomers to eat quickly before announcing that she wished they would take on tribe names like the rest who already had time to introduce themselves in the break.
"Even if your stay is short, it would be an honor to have you as honorary Tribe members. May the Tribe of Endless Hunting bless your hearts whatever the choice."
While each cat gave fairly uncertain affirmative answers, Leafteller was happy all the same.
"Hm... let's see. You may be Moss that Clings to Bark." She gestured to the mother who nodded. "And I hope you don't mind being assigned roles either. Moss, you look like you'd do well as a Prey-Hunter like Sky, but since you have a young kit to watch still, you are dismissed from duty and will be resting in camp and sleeping in the Sapling den with Philip. Speaki-"
Leafteller was cut off by Sky butting into the conversation.
"A cat can be dismissed from duties and get to laze around all day?"
"Not exactly, but when a cat has young kits or is too old or ill to perform their duties, it is in our best interest to let them stay in camp and out of danger." She explained, looking at the other molly as if she should already know this. "As I was saying. Philip's name could be Toad Diving into Mud. As a sapling, he shouldn't be allowed outside camp and will be kept protected at all times. Next there's...What were your names again?" The healer was embarrassed, but she had only heard the names once before and hadn't paid particularly much attention to them.
"I'm Lucas."
"And I'm Amelia."
"Alright, alright. Lucas, you seem like Snipe that Passes Proudly would fit you. And Amelia, you seem like a...Butterfly that Flutters Past. Both of you seem to be at a proper age to be to-bes. Snipe, you will be trained by Sunset as a Swamp-Guard and Butterfly, you will be trained by Sky as a Prey-hunter." The healer declared, purring proudly as she stood tall. "Perhaps you should go and have a quick tour of the swamp. Nothing will happen, don't worry." She advised, looking over at Sky who was talking to Flame, Sunset already nearby as he had been listening.
"Yeah, come along, Snipe. I'll fetch my sister and we can all go together." Sunset was honestly getting used to this place a lot quicker than his sister, already having a fair grasp on the territory and how to move around without getting stuck or too muddy.
Sky sighed after getting invited, Flame leaving her with a flick of his thick tail, practically leaping up onto a tree and resting on the branch. As much as she didn't want to, Sky had to and she knew it so she followed her brother, walking along with her new to-be, quite displeased with life here.
Butterfly padded along beside her, ignoring her mentor trying to get across how horrid she finds this place so far in a hushed voice. She wasn't sure she wanted to be here more than she had to either.
