paragraphjust by looking at him, it never dawns on anyone that luthais might have led a life of unbridled luxury before he was sworn into the service of sable shrike. originally born into a twoleg household set far in the frozen tundra, luthais was surprisingly unfettered by the whims and calls of his housefolk. he was born of the firmest pedigree and finest degree, to a bed of roses and food on a silver spoon. however, it wasn’t even until his tenth moon that the white himalayan cast off his collar, and the disgrace that came with it; vanishing into the snow and leaving so little trace behind he might as well have never been born there. this wasn’t just due to the passing rogues that mocked him when they saw the collar adorning his neck. no, it was what he saw in his dreams. 
paragraphbeing born what he was, luthais was not religious nor did he have even the slightest speck of superstition. most of his days were spent grooming his long and lustrous coat into perfection anyway. so when a mysterious and lean grey tabby who called himself the emissary, started to visit his dreams, luthais was, needless to say, bewildered.
paragraphnights in the arctic north were spent with a spiritual air. in his dreams, he saw a kingdom in the clouds and mountains. he saw a majestic brute standing upon a throne of steel, with a muscular tom standing at his right paw. the stance and gait of the two cats just radiated power, grace. but the dream morphed, warped, till he saw the kingdom nearly engulfed by a roiling dark mass that threatened to envelop them. standing tall to face it was the same brute accompanied by another smaller cat.
paragraph“their kingdom is undefended.” it wasn’t the emissary who spoke, but a tenebrous maine coon with eyes the color of roses. the warbringer. “the fresh blood to be spilled by the darkness ahead will color the tundra. the emperor calls for a sable shrike, a tom of poise, might, purpose, and jugement. earlier we thought you were ready to cast of the chains of your owners.” his burning golden eyes pinned luthais to the spot “it seems we were wrong.”
paragraph“you chose me to be the shrike; giving me that honor.” this wasn’t the first visit that luthais had received from the gods, and in these icy nights, he’d changed. the white tom stood before the two deities, pelt puffing as he stood tall with pride. “you said that many moons ago. what changed?”
paragraph“we were not giving you anything.” óminni voice rumbled menacingly on the last word, and nāthæ raised his tail for peace. luthais eyed the two warily, half crouched as he prepared to spring. his gut twisted as he realized how insolent he must have sounded.
paragraph“as for your second question.” a lilting yet husky female purr answered behind him; the maiden. “being the shrike demands loyalty and fealty of blood, body and spirit.” the fae crossed to his front, to be joined by other spiritual cat-figures. the rest of the gods apparently. now, they spoke as one. “affirm now; do you decry your former life and swear your fealty to the throne?”

Clan Tradition:
When an apprentice is ready to become a warrior, they shall go on a week long quest into the Two-Leg territory on the western boarder, where they will look for a monkey by the name of Fitzgerald, and he will make their new clan collar for them. If they succeed then they shall be welcomed back to the clan as a full warrior, if they do not then they will have to train for an additional moon before they are able to try again. If they fail a second time, they are banished from the clan for weakness and a disrespect for clan tradition and law.

She had to get this right. A gentle rustle of branches in the heavy pine grove was the only clue Ivypaw needed, instinct from moons of training with Smokestep and Nightfang taking over. 'Paws tucked. Haunches tight and high. Tail completely still. Aim... and leap!' With a mighty spring, she shot upwards gracefully, teeth closing around the bird's neck, and finishing it off with a quick snap before her paws even hit the ground. "See that, Nightfang?" she called, shaking the bird around proudly as she scanned the clearing. No sign of her mentor, but that was alright. Ivypaw knew she was watching closely, wherever the she-cat was hiding.

Ivypaw let the bird slip from between her teeth and fall gently to the ground, kicking fallen pine needles over it to conceal its scent, before heading off deeper into the grove. She froze, though, when an unfamiliar scent on the breeze caught her attention. "Cats," she murmured, fur on end. Another long sniff, and her nose curled at the acrid stench of illness, or maybe hunger. "Sick cats. I'm gonna check it out." With a final glance at the fallen bird, Ivypaw sighed and gave way to her curiosity. Abandoning her final assessment, the grey she-cat trotted off in search of the scent's source. If her instincts were right... well, she hoped they weren't, but it was worth looking into.

Nightfang stepped out of the shadows, careful to remain quiet and unseen. "Where is she going?" she murmured, and followed after her apprentice as she disappeared around the curve of a rocky ledge.

Sparrowstar, waiting atop the Tall Stones with the rest of the clan scattered around him, had expected Nightfang and Ivypaw to return with big smiles and the triumphant declaration that she'd earned her warrior name. What he expected was not at all what he got. An embarrassed-looking Ivypaw trotted into the main camp, followed by two ragged, thin-looking toms, and a worried Nightfang hot on their heels. His ears pricked with interest. "Are you sure this is alright?" the red one murmured, sticking close to Ivypaw's side, while the smaller white flamepoint stayed behind the other tom. Ivypaw nodded firmly, dismissing his concerns.

"Sparrowstar," Ivypaw said, stepping forwards with a calm, steady gaze. "Everyone. This is Atreo, and his brother Cyrus. I found them stranded on the mountain path about halfway through my assessment. I couldn't just leave them there. They're hungry, and sick, and their clan is gone." The entirety of SpruceClan was quiet, eyes trained on Ivypaw as she spoke to their leader. "I know I didn't finish, so I haven't earned my name, but they needed help and a home. Will you accept them?"

"Well, then," the leader said sternly, before his facade broke and he dissolved into good-natured laughter. "Only you, Ivypaw, would stop your final assessment to rescue someone." Ivypaw flushed, looking away with a pleased smile, while the two brothers behind her exchanged curious glances. "Nightfang!" Sparrowstar called, startling her mentor to attention. "Before her... unplanned departure from the assessment, how did Ivypaw perform?"

Nightfang straightened up, answering him calmly. "Ivypaw showed great skill today. She caught a bird with some of the best technique I've ever seen her use, and for what it's worth, I couldn't be prouder of her decision today. To show compassion to two strangers, even at the cost of earning her warrior name, is something worth admiring." Sparrowstar smiled knowingly.

"Very well," he said. "I have come to a decision. Atreo and Cyrus? If you'd like to become members of SpruceClan, we will grant you new names, as is our custom. Atreo, for your red coat, you will be known as Cardinaltail. And Cyrus, for your markings, you will be known as Goldenpaw. Your mentor will be Smokestep. Though he, too, is new to SpruceClan, he is wise, and will be able to teach you all that being a warrior entails."

Ivypaw visibly sagged with relief. "Thank you, Sparrowstar," she purred, before nudging the two toms gently. Goldenpaw looked excited, allowing Smokestep to pad forwards and touch noses with him briefly. Cardinaltail glanced at Ivypaw, and mouthed, 'Thank you." She just dipped her head in acknowledgement, before yowling at the top of her lungs. Quickly, Smokestep joined in, as did the rest of the clan.

"Cardinaltail! Goldenpaw! Cardinaltail! Goldenpaw! Cardinaltail! Goldenpaw!"

"I'm not finished yet," their leader interrupted, but the joy on his face betrayed his intentions. "Ivypaw, you have done something remarkable today. I think that's worth rewarding. I, Sparrowstar, leader of SpruceClan, call upon my warrior ancestors to look down on this apprentice. She has trained hard to understand the ways of your noble code, and I commend her to you as a warrior in her turn." Ivypaw's eyes went wide, and she nearly let out a squeak of excitement. "Ivypaw, do you promise to uphold the warrior code and to protect and defend your Clan, even at the cost of your life?"

"I do," she whispered, smile bright and eyes sparkling. "I do!"

"Then Ivypaw, from this day forth, you will be known as Ivyblossom. StarClan honors your kindness and spirit, and welcomes you as a full warrior of SpruceClan." Ivyblossom darted up to Tall Stones, stretching as far as she could to touch noses with Sparrowstar. As she clambered back down and into the crowd, Smokestep smiled at her and offered whispers of congratulations. "Today seems to be full of surprises, doesn't it?" Sparrowstar murmured. "Merlin, I think it's high time we give you your warrior name as well." Merlin smiled, standing up and moving through the small cluster of cats to face his leader. Sparrowstar nodded at him kindly. "Merlin, from this day forth, you will be known as Hailsplash. StarClan honors your resilience and curiosity, and welcomes you as a full member of SpruceClan." The silver tabby flashed a fanged grin, glancing to Briarmask encouragingly. Nightfang, meanwhile, let out a whoop, leading the chant in her apprentice's honor.

"Ivyblossom! Hailsplash! Ivyblossom! Hailsplash! Ivyblossom! Hailsplash!"

Satisfied, Sparrowstar leapt down from Tall Stones, his throat a little dry from the sheer number of ceremonies he'd just carried out at once. The clan gathering finished, most cats started to scatter, going about their days as usual. Heathersong and her own apprentice, Cherrypaw, both trotted up to him immediately. "I finally get to have a denmate!" the young apprentice cheered, while her mentor just shook her head, giving their leader a swift lick. Sparrowstar glanced back at her, fond, before motioning for them to join him on patrol.

Meanwhile, an ecstatic Ivyblossom had taken it upon herself to help her new friends adjust. "Come on, then!" she purred, tapping Cardinaltail and Goldenpaw on their shoulders with her tail. "There's so many cats you need to meet! Ooh, and so many neat places around our territory, and the best kinds of prey, and all the cute kits in the nursery! But first, let's get you fed and checked at Applefall's den— he's our healer." Cardinaltail nodded gratefully, solemn, while Goldenpaw just grinned, glancing around the caves with wide, awed eyes.

"I'm so proud of her," Nightfang purred, eyes twinkling in the midday light. "Our Ivyblossom's a warrior now, and you're going to have an apprentice of your own." Smokestep, seated by her side, paused in his grooming of her fur and offered a rumbling purr of his own in agreement. An idea seemed to occur to her, then, and the black she-cat turned to him eagerly. "Come on, come on!" she crowed, nudging Smokestep onto his feet. He did as commanded, laughing slightly in his confusion.

"Alright, alright, I'm up!" he said, only for Nightfang to flash him a wide, toothy grin, and take off running. "Where's all this energy comin' from?" Smokestep yowled after her, but she'd already rocketed out of the cave entrance to the main camp and into the stone clearing beyond it. He had to sprint to catch up, and by the time he'd left the cave, only a flash of her long black tail gave him a clue to where she was going. Smokestep trotted along after her at a more leisurely pace, as the trees overhead offered shade and the wildlife nearby provided soft ambient chirps and whistles.

Eventually, of course, the path narrowed and weaved and led directly to the place he'd been expecting. A towering, sturdy pine tree with a neat little opening towards the base. Nightfang was standing there, waiting for him, her whiskers twitching like she was either hiding a smile, or nervous. Smokestep opened his mouth to ask her what was going on, but she turned tail and slipped through the hole. He trailed behind her, weaseling through the gap at the Watchpoint Tree, their usual haunt. He wasn't quite sure what was going on, but there was an urgency in Nightfang's movements that left him a little nervous himself.

"Smokestep," she began, staring at him with the sappiest look he'd ever seen shining in her golden eyes. Behind her was a panoramic view of the world around them, the world wider than the mountain life they lived, from lush forest to infinite glittering bodies of water, to a little red speck that might've been his old barn. But none of that mattered to Smokestep. All he cared about in that moment was the breathless, breathtaking she-cat in front of him. Nightfang placed one gentle paw on his chest. 'She's shaking,' he noted idly. "Smokestep," she began again, swallowing. "Can you— I mean, could... would you like to start a family with me?"

For a moment, time stood still. Then, with a start, Smokestep's brain caught up to her words. "Yes," he breathed, a dopey grin on his face. "Yes, yes, a million times yes!" Her face split into a grin. Nightfang rushed at him, curling around him happily, her purr rumbling from deep within her chest. Smokestep buried his face into her thick fur, hiding his own smile and listening to the gentle, steady thump of her heart.

Greycloud's enthusiastic sigh of relief as Cricketpounce stepped into the nursery was rather alarming. "Is everything alright?" the tom asked, voice laced with concern. Greycloud just chuckled, slumping over in exhaustion as a swarm of four excitable kits came bounding into the nursery cave. Cricketpounce nearly tripped over the flood of furry bodies returning from their break to play in central camp. "Well, hello, there!" he purred, to which the many kits all chirped their greetings.

"It's lonely, being the only one in here with four rambunctious bundles of fluff," Greycloud muttered, as an exuberant Thistlekit wormed her way onto Cricketpounce's back, Ravenkit following right after. The warrior resisted the urge to cough at the weight— they were getting a bit big for badger-back rides."Exhausting, if I'm honest. Thank you for coming by, Cricket, I really appreciate it." He smiled at her, even as he bounced around the stone floors. Honeykit, sitting in the corner of the nursery, kept sneaking glances at the healer's den. Cricketpounce made note of that— Applefall would find it hilarious, and probably touching, too.

"Always happy to help a friend," Cricketpounce said, now hopping from right to left amid Thistlekit and Ravenkit's giggles. "You know, they're coming up on being apprentices soon, what with how big they've gotten! Have you talked with Sparrowstar about what mentors would suit them?"

Thistlekit puffed out her chest at that. "We're gonna be the best apprentices SpruceClan's ever seen! Right, Raven? Right, Honey?" Her siblings each nodded in agreement. Ravenkit's little claws sank deeper into Cricketpounce's fur. The warrior swallowed his protests adamantly, before turning when he felt a soft tap on one foreleg.

"I want to be a healer," Honeykit explained shyly, blinking up at Cricketpounce with wide, green eyes. His heart melted a little in his chest. "I like sorting the herbs. Do you think I can be a healer with Applefall?"

"Of course, darlin'," Cricketpounce purred. "You can be the best healer SpruceClan's ever seen." He was rewarded by the brilliant grin on the golden kit's face as she, too, attempted to climb onto his back. He fought back the grunt of pain as best he could, but Greycloud's knowing snort was a sure sign that he'd failed. There was the quiet footfall of paws against stone and a gentle scent on the breeze, signalling Hailsplash's arrival to the nursery. Cricketpounce would've offered his greetings to the new warrior, but as he was currently juggling three heavy kittens, he could barely manage a friendly twitch of the tail.

"Good evening, Greycloud. Good evening, Cricketpounce," Hailsplash murmured, before gravitating over to where Coffeekit was sitting, alone. His voice grew softer, more fond. "How's my girl doing this evening?" Just like that, Coffeekit's quiet demeanor flipped, and Cricketpounce watched in shock as the brown kit became a whirlwind of energy, charging at Hailsplash excitedly.

"Papa Merlin!" Coffeekit cried, tripping over herself in her haste, but quickly jumping up once more to nuzzle into his chest. Hailsplash grinned, licking down the stray tuft of fur on the kit's forehead. "Let's play a game! Come on, let's play!" He smiled at the kit again, all doe-eyed and fatherly, before gently ushering her out of the nursery to play.

"He come in here often?" Cricketpounce asked, watching them go curiously. Greycloud nodded, smiling.

"I owe him one, really. Coffeekit wasn't opening up well, and she didn't seem to feel like she fit in. But somehow, she's gotten it in her head that he's her father. I can't blame her. He comes by every day to play with her." Her smile turned to a smirk, with a conspiratory twinkle in her eye. "Just between you and me, I think he's trying to impress Briarmask with his fathering abilities."

"Huh," Cricketpounce murmured, as Hailsplash tossed around bird's feathers for Coffeekit to chase. Sure enough, SpruceClan's deputy happened to wander by, stopping to greet Coffeekit and exchange a few words with Hailsplash. As she left, the pleased grin on both their faces was tell-tale enough. Cricketpounce turned back to Greycloud, impressed. "You might be right," he mewed. "And honestly? I think it's working."

The sky had begun to make its transition from vibrant blue to pitch black, and somewhere between the bursts of orange and pink streaks that tore across the horizon, Applefall slipped away with a few of the kitting herbs he and Honeykit had meticulously sorted earlier that day. The little rascal was persistent, he'd give her that. Outside, Briarmask was leaning against Cricketpounce's shoulder, breathing heavily and peering at him with wide, frightened eyes. Applefall's hard expression softened in sympathy. "Come on, then," he muttered. "The sooner we get out of the territory, the less likely they are to scent us tomorrow. We'll have more time to hunt down this Pompeiicall, too." Cricketpounce grunted in wordless agreement. Briarmask nodded, tail curled protectively around her stomach, before she heaved a great sigh and started to push forwards. Applefall slid up to her opposite side, supporting the she-cat and company's weight.

"Applefall? Cricketpounce?" the deputy murmured as they walked, biting back a hiss of pain as her stomach spasmed. "Thank you."

Cricketpounce huffed. "Don't thank us now, Briar. Thank us when it's over." Applefall said nothing, his mouth full of herbs, but agreed silently. Sometimes Cricket was wise beyond his years. "Let's keep moving. You can do it, dear."

At the mouth of the cave, a lanky white tom padded out, catching a final glimpse of the triad as they ambled off into the woods. Tallthorn shook his head sharply, trying to dispel the sharp-tongued whispers of StarClan in his ears. They hadn't stopped yowling about Briarmask or her— admittedly, well-concealed— incoming litter in his dreams or his waking hours for weeks. "That won't end well," he muttered, tail flicking irritably, but with just a pinch of sympathy in his voice as the last hints of calico and tabby pelts disappeared from view. "Good luck," Tallthorn said softly, though he wasn't quite sure who it was addressed to, before turning back to head to his nest for yet another sleepless night.

xxxxxxx Patchnose really didn’t start out on his walk with a hope of a potential partner; he really was trying his best to remember his earliest memories possible. Did Rainsong and Sunstar seem tense when they were kits or was that just his knowledge now tainting the past? Was it a dream that he and his sisters had taken a long walk and met a cat in the woods? When Patchedmask first appeared in the middle of camp, was there a flicker of recognition from all of those moons ago? THUNK. “Where’s your mind these days, Patchnose?” Dawndapple, the dilute calico molly he’d secretly been visiting for many moons, booped him on the nose with her paw.
xxxxxxx “Sorry, just thinking about family.” Patchnose sat beside her on the dirt.
xxxxxxx “You’ve been doing that a lot lately,” Dawndapple observed, “and you still haven’t told Sunstar about our visits?”
xxxxxxx “He has enough on his plate,” Though Patchnose still felt a sharp pang of guilt run through him. He had been outright lying to his poor father who was only trying to be a more present figure in his life.
xxxxxxx “I understood when we were just fishing and talking,” Dawndapple rested her tail on his, “but we’re kind of serious now. I’ve seen your forest and even met your younger sister, and I’ve brought you to view IslandClan, though from afar.”
xxxxxxx “It’s a daunting swim for someone who only uses steppingstones over our river,” Patchnose shrugged as Dawndapple broke out into laughter. “But you’re right, I need to tell Sunstar.”
xxxxxxx “What about what we talked about last time?” Dawndapple stopped chuckling but her voice remained soft and light.
xxxxxxx “I think that’d be great,” Patchnose grinned, “And good news to break to TwistedClan. A small family that’s all ours sounds perfect.”

xxxxxxx Mountaintop flicked his tail watching Lostpaw and Ghostpaw’s warrior ceremony but was distracted by Chunkykit fidgeting so much that Neritefang had to come up behind her and force her into a sitting position with her paws. Mountaintop almost turned to Frostthorn to snicker at the excited kit but remembered he was sitting at the base of the Ceremony Tree as medicine cat with Volépaw to his right. Mountaintop also found it rather humorous that Volépaw was much larger than his mentor especially with his curly fur. Frostthorn was past his growing spurts and would remain small statured for the remainder of his life, though that didn’t mean anything after all, Sunstar was smaller than the average tom himself. Mountaintop joined in chanting the new warriors’ names, Lostpath and Ghostshiver, but continued to watch Chunkykit fidget. Her apprentice ceremony was next. She rushed to climb to the lowest branch to join Sunstar but needed a boost from Volépaw to scramble up. “Chunkykit,” Sunstar’s whiskers twitched, “it is time for you to be apprenticed. From this day on, you will be known as Chunkypaw, and your mentor will be Mountaintop.” Sunstar paused, allowing for the surprised Mountaintop and Chunkypaw to touch noses.
xxxxxxx “Congrats,” Frostthorn muttered as Mountaintop passed him. He grinned despite still feeling a twinge of survivor’s guilt. How different would it have been to have Frigidthorn standing here instead receiving his own apprentice alongside his brother? Twilightpounce and Raventalon were in ChessClan along with Valleyrunner and Crowtalon had finally settled in with Eaglescreech. It should have been me.

xxxxxxx Night fell quickly over the twisted forest and Volépaw watched Frostthorn recount seeds and shuffle herbs around with no particular reason. He had noticed how tired the tom was looking like in the mornings and wondered if he wasn’t experiencing some type of insomnia. “When I don’t feel like I can fall asleep, I like to repeat all the common usages of herbs and where they can be found in the forest,” He offered up helpfully, “but I only see results when I am lying down resting.”
xxxxxxx Frostthorn shot him an annoyed glare and continued sweeping through the medicine storage. His paws carefully ran underneath a thick root where the poisons were kept. After counting them under his breath, he sighed and finally retreated to his nest. “Do you have dreams?”
xxxxxxx Volépaw almost answered of course as every cat had dreams but he had a feeling those benign dreams were the kind Frostthorn meant. Instead, he thought of all of his previous dreams that felt just a little too real and nodded slowly. “Not those dreams very often.” He admitted. Were special dreams something a medicine cat should be having regularly? Did this StarClan not accept him as an apprentice even though he hardly remembered, or tried to forget, his time with Ernest’s rogue group?
xxxxxxx “What were they?” Frostthorn pressed.
xxxxxxx Volépaw was suddenly nervous. This seemed like a training session but one that mattered a whole lot more than hunting or stalking. “Usually related to things that would happen eventually. Not exactly, but I used to have dreams as a kit of some sort of celebrations with lots of cats. It was like when Ernest was killed, and we were accepted into TwistedClan.” He took a deep breath. “Sometimes I dream of Sage and her kits, but they’re older. They seem to be doing well.”
xxxxxxx Frostthorn nodded obviously interested in what he was saying. “And what about omens?” His voice dropped to a whisper.
xxxxxxx “Are those different than the…the special dreams?” Volépaw stammered. He didn’t know where this conversation was going anymore.
xxxxxxx “Very,” Frostthorn carefully laid down resting his head on his paws.
xxxxxxx "How so?"
xxxxxxx “Dreams can cause a sense of comfort,” Frostthorn closed his eyes, “and omens cause anything but.” Volépaw sat in his own nest, waiting for any more information but Frostthorn was asleep, or at the very least pretending to be asleep. Now Volépaw was the one that was slightly weary of sleep and what it could bring.

xxxxxxx Stormheart understood why a lot of the other warriors kept a certain distance from Softdapple but after resigning himself to becoming her hunting partner, he discovered she had a sort of charm to her. She was quick to laugh but getting her to drop the cute chuckles and start a roaring belly laugh was a sign of a great patrol. She was still ditzy and slightly clueless with things that should have been common sense, but she was a ray of light in a forest full of uncertainties.

xxxxxxxIt was finally time for Weaselstar along with Swankit and Mistgale to depart for RavenClan. Only Mistgale would be returning leaving Lynxshine alone with Minkkit without her mate. Sunstar was arranging a small care package that they could take along for the journey as well as traveling herbs dispensed by Frostthorn but Lynxshine kept Weaselstar in the nursery. “I wish you wouldn’t go,” She couldn’t help herself from whispering. She knew this was inevitable but now that it was really time for him to leave, she almost couldn’t stand it.
xxxxxxx “You could come with us,” Weaselstar murmured in return, but like Lynxshine knew that he had to go, he knew she had to stay.
xxxxxxx “I’ll see you off,” Lynxshine compromised. They roused the kits and stepped out into the clearing where Mistgale was waiting. She would be an extra set of paws on the journey.
xxxxxxx “It’s past dawn,” She yawned. Fogfield glared at her in the shadow of the fronds. She had wanted to tag along too.
xxxxxxx “We’ll get there in plenty of time,” Weaselstar assured her and turned to Sunstar. “Thank you very much for your hospitality.”

xxxxxxx “I just might have to take you up on that,” Weaselstar nudged Swankit forward, “You’ll see your brother again,” He promised with a quick lick. Then it was time to say goodbye to Lynxshine. Sunstar casually backed up to give the two space. “I’ll miss waking up to your beautiful face.” He murmured in her ear.
xxxxxxx "I’ve never wanted a family or felt like I was missing a piece in my heart but when I met you, I knew that I was destined for something larger than myself: loving you." She licked his cheek. “Please, whatever you do stay safe for me. For me and our kits.”
xxxxxxx “Of course,” But Weaselstar’s heart skipped a beat and this time it wasn’t for any positive reasons. There was activity stirring in his part of the forest and some promises are hard to keep. “I’ll be waiting for you in my dreams.”

xxxxxxx Sunstar did his best to not eavesdrop on the departing couple, but what he heard was really sweet and put him in a particularly romantic mood. He first remembered the explorations he and Rainsong used to go to but then his mind wandered back to a certain deaf tom. Patchnose was right; perhaps it was time to actually admit his thoughts to Windchill. Luckily, it looked like the tom in question was rising and getting ready for the day. Taking a deep breath, he marched over and stood authoritative over him, disregarding the fact that Windchill was a hair taller than himself. Windchill lazily flicked his tail from side to side, good morning.
xxxxxxx “Good morning,” Sunstar tried to stop himself from tripping over his words as lip reading was a rather important form of communication, “I was wondering if you’d…like to be…mates or something…with me…” He shifted nervously, out of practice with love related things, but Windchill pressed against him and nodded. For a long moment, everything seemed alright once more, maybe he was back just as Sunchaser with limited responsibilities and his sole life ahead of him.

xxxxxxx By sun high, Patchnose and Sunstar each had big news to share with the other and both of them grabbed a squirrel intending to share and discuss their major life events. Turns out they both could comfortably eat a whole squirrel, so post-lunch was spent sunning on flat rocks. “I finally told Windchill about…” Sunstar was the first to speak, “We’re mates now. Officially.”
xxxxxxx “Congratulations,” Patchnose said sincerely. “Have you told Tornadosong?”
xxxxxxx “Not yet, we only talked recently, and since you have been the one nagging me,” Sunstar said playfully. “She’ll be the next to know.”
xxxxxxx “I also have something to tell you,” Patchnose said carefully, “I kinda-sorta have a mate myself now. Dawndapple of IslandClan. And she’s expecting kits.”
xxxxxxx Sunstar rolled to face his oldest son. “All of this time I’ve asked if there was anything important going on in your life and you are hiding a mate behind your back?” He sounded hurt.
xxxxxxx “We weren’t mates until recently.” Patchnose quickly said. “Tornadosong doesn’t even know we’re official now.”
xxxxxxx "Now?"
xxxxxxx “Tornadosong met Dawndapple a couple moons ago,” Patchnose admitted, “She just happened to be on a nearby hunting patrol.”
xxxxxxx “Why didn’t you tell me?” Sunstar’s whiskers and tail drooped. “I thought we promised no more secrets and you could tell me anything.”
xxxxxxx “I don’t know,” Patchnose stammered, “I didn’t want to bother you with something that might never pan out. Honestly, we were only friends for the majority of time. You have a lot on your plate right now, especially right after Tigerstrike’s litter was born. I’ll tell you anything next time.” But Sunstar just shook his head slowly. The damage was already done.

xxxxxxx Wishbone found himself spending more time with Frostthorn now that Mountaintop was focused on training Chunkypaw. It was strange because it made him think of when they first met and became friends but that also opened up his memory to the woes of Ernest. He turned to mention something about the past when Squirreltuft stood in the middle of the clearing of camp to make a very important announcement. Him and Chipmunknuzzle were mates and were expecting a litter of kits. “I want it to be known that I will be the first of my siblings to have kits,” He boasted, “so I expect all of you to be very impressed.”
xxxxxxx “That’s not true,” Shrewfeather pointed out, “Robinripple and I have been mates for a couple moons.”
xxxxxxx “I know that,” Squirreltuft said, “but you can’t really be magicking kits out of nowhere if you know what I mean.”
xxxxxxx “Robinripple is actually pregnant,” Shrewfeather corrected, “Mousespeck helped.”
xxxxxxx Squirreltuft turned to his brother looking shocked and betrayed. “You didn’t tell me?”
xxxxxxx “Not my news to tell,” It was obvious that they were all having fun poking fun at their brother who was usually the one ribbing them.
xxxxxxx “It doesn’t matter,” Chipmunknuzzle quietly pointed out, but Squirreltuft was slightly deflated anyway.

xxxxxxx “Sunstar?” Patchnose poked his nose into the hollowed tree trunk where the leader slept. “I have an opportunity of sorts.”
xxxxxxx “Yes?” Sunstar’s answer was short still annoyed by Patchnose’s lie.
xxxxxxx “If you and Windchill ever want to have kits,” Patchnose said, “Dawndapple said there’s a molly willing to be a surrogate. Her name is Rimefrost.”
xxxxxxx Sunstar was silent for a few moments and Patchnose debated leaving him to think. “I’ll talk to Windchill.” Came the response. Patchnose nodded even though he was out of sight. He had down all he could do.

xxxxxxx Deergaze’s fluffy tail was perfect kit bait and Morningkit enjoyed chasing it for hours. Tigerstrike watched appreciatively. It was difficult to keep up with Morningkit’s attention span. Deergaze winced as the kitten’s fangs sank into her tail as Morningkit finally caught it. “You can always tell her you’ve had enough,” Tigerstrike reminded her and pulled back his daughter. “Don’t eat Deergaze’s tail.”
xxxxxxx “It’s all in good fun,” Deergaze shook her tail inviting Morningkit to try again. Tigerstrike smiled watching the two play. Deergaze was very patient with Morningkit and he enjoyed watching them romp about.
