indent"if our kennel keeps growing at this rate," proteus was saying, his voice low and even in the quiet air. to his left, alcides was sitting up straight, reflected against hyperion to proteus' right, who's shoulders were hunched and his head low. "then we need to keep sending out more hunting patrols. we have enough food for now, but it won't be long until winter's here." the sun had yet to rise and was barely peaking out above the horizon as the trio spoke. hyperion had been silent for majority of the discussion, though he looked up now and glanced between the demi-god and his adviser.
indent"many of my fighters have been hunting with the hunters," he grumbled, "while also marking borders and chasing out threats. you expect them to handle everything."
indent"we thank you and your fighters for all of the work they have been doing," alcides cut in, feeling proteus stiffen. "but we need to make sure that none of our dogs starve. with so many hunters training pupils and pups in the nursery, we need to keep hunting."
indent"we need to stop taking in refugees from disbanded groups," hyperion said after a long beat of silence, to which alcides' ears perked up, surprised.
indent"you know we won't do that, we're a group built on taking in refugees," alcides said with a flick of his ear. "do you forget that you were once one?" he sent hyperion a pointed glance, though the commander met his eyes without flinching. from across the clearing, a dark shape emerged from the nursery, where perseus and tiresias were helping leto have her anticipated pups. since the ibizan hound's arrival, the entire group had been looking forward to when she would have her pups as the newest introductions to mount olympus. tiresias ran into the high priest's den, and proteus followed his form through the shadows at the edge of the camp until the young priest disappeared. only proteus watched him move, as alcides and hyperion remained engaged.
indent"i would never forget where i came from," hyperion growled softly, "and i don't need you to remind me. but if you're so concerned about our population and not being able to feed everyone, then shouldn't we close our borders?" hyperion questioned, jutting his chin in alcides' direction.
indentalcides, however, flicked his ear again. "the gods demand that we help the less fortunate. we cannot turn away those who need us," he argued, "we just need to send out more hunting patrols this season so we can last until winter ends." hyperion grunted, not agreeing with alcides but not arguing with him either. silence stretched for a long moment, and proteus watched tiresias head back towards the nursery. when tiresias slipped out of sight, he turned his attention towards the other two.
indent"we're not here to argue about refugees," proteus pointed out, "we're here to discuss hunting patrols. hyperion, will you continue to send your fighters out to keep hunting?" he asked, offering a small smile of gratitude when hyperion dipped his head. "good. we can bring up the refugees when perseus can join us again. but we also need to decide who should be the new head hunter," he continued.
indent"you know the hunters best," alcides cut in, nodding to proteus, "who would you recommend?"
indent"someone with some sense, i would hope," hyperion muttered, though proteus paid his comment no mind, instead thinking of the hunters resting on the other side of the clearing. he knew that alcides would ask him who he might pick. he knew them all from the start, from the very beginning. even after alcides asked proteus to be his adviser, proteus continued to oversee the hunters in the absence of a head hunter. until now, they had been fine without one, but proteus decided that it could only be for the better if there was a head hunter to take over, so that he could focus on other matters beyond assigning mentors. "sarpedon has been here a long time, he's the oldest of the hunters. he's experienced and has a level-head," proteus started, "asterion has been here for several moons as well, and he had experience from his former group. and andromache was one of our first hunters. she's smart and clever, but also a good hunter." proteus shifted his paws and shrugged, "if i had to choose, i would pick from those three."
indenthyperion stretched his jaws in a yawn and dipped his head, "any of those three have my approval," he consented.
indent"we should decide by the end of this moon," alcides said dismissively, "we will observe the three and reconvene when the time comes." there was an air of finality to alcides' tone, and proteus realized that it was coming time that the rest of the group would be waking up. the day was about to start and the three members of the leadership needed to organize. with a nod, hyperion made to stand along with alcides, though proteus piped up one last time.
indent"there's one more thing," he said, not giving either a chance to walk away. "perseus wanted to bring it up this morning, but he's tending to leto. tiresias wants to take pythia as a priestess when she comes of age. and perseus agrees with him."
indentproteus opened his mouth to argue for perseus further, but hyperion swished his tail and began to walk away. "i won't argue. let them take her, she would not be a fighter." with that, the commander walked away to the fighters' den, likely to find bellerophon and begin organizing the day's patrols. proteus turned to alcides then, who tipped his head to one side.
indent"the pup can barely hear or see," alcides murmured, aware of the sounds of the group waking around them. the last thing they wanted was for eleos or her other pups to hear him. "does perseus actually think she can be a priestess?" he asked.
indent"i don't know," proteus said, "but it's not likely she could be a fighter or a hunter. he spoke to leto, who says that she's a smart pup. why not let her try? it's better than having a pup spend her entire life living with the elders," proteus said simply with a shrug. at that, alcides smiled slightly and nodded, brushing past proteus towards his own den. "then i agree. tell perseus that he and tiresias can take her in."

indentinside the nursery, perseus finally sat back when leto was nursing four pups at her belly, the four already strong. leto looked at the pups with pride, though her smile was tinged with saddness. she looked up at the high priest with watery eyes, "thank you," she whispered softly. perseus did his best to return the smile, dipping his head down to touch his nose to the venus' forehead.
indent"the gods are good," he murmured, "but it's a tough season for pups. i'm sorry i couldn't save them all." of leto's pups, two had been stillborn, unable to ever enter into the world. tiresias had already taken the two small bodies from camp, so that leto would be able to care for the four pups who needed her, and the rest of the group wouldn't have to see the poor scraps. perseus straightened up and looked to where eleos was smiling down gently at the new additions to the group, her own pups sound asleep. two of her pups, oileus and codrus, had taken to sleeping in a shared nest, though pythia remained with her mother and the orphaned pup, aura. the newest venus, themis, left her nest for the night to sleep with her mate in the fighters' den, in order to give leto more space. perseus made a mental note to make sure she had returned to the nursery by nightfall, where he could keep an eye on her better.
indentafter exchanging several final words with leto and wishing eleos a good day, perseus left the nursery. exhaustion pulled at his eyelids and his limbs felt numb, though he perked up when he spotted proteus waiting in the clearing. perseus hesitated, padding forward only when his eyes met proteus', and the latter straightened up with a gentle smile. as had always happened, though with even more intensity than before, perseus felt his heart tug when he neared proteus. as if he could sense perseus' distress, proteus met him halfway, reaching up to rest his chin atop perseus' head. perseus went easily, lying his head on proteus' shoulder and breathing him in. "i'm tired," perseus breathed out after a moment, and proteus hummed softly.
indent"then let me walk you back to your den," proteus said quietly. around them, persus could hear the patrols rounding up, mentors calling to their pupils for a long day of training ahead. he thought of the herbs waiting for him and tiresias, desperately needing to be collected before the frosts came. even still, he allowed proteus to guide him, gentle and coaxing, across the camp until they reached perseus' den. the smallest sniff told the high priest that tiresias hadn't returned yet, likely still burying the pups or he had found something else to occupy him. on another day, perseus would have looked for the priest to help him with the pups, but perseus had been awake all night helping leto, his heart was heavy, and proteus' breath was warm against his shoulder.
indent"come in, at least for a little bit," perseus said, not missing the fondness in proteus' eyes. "how long were you waiting?" he asked after a moment, when they were inside the den, perseus shifting the moss of his bed and proteus taking a seat nearby.
indent"not too long," proteus answered dismissively. "i saw tiresias," he added after a beat, and perseus felt his body stiffen.
indent"i did what i could," perseus said, daring to look up at proteus. "thanks to the gods, the other four are alive and well."
indent"i wasn't criticizing you," proteus said, moving forward when perseus finally sat down. the adviser shifted, pressing himself close into perseus' flank. "i want to make sure that you're okay." not for the first time, peresus was reminded of the moons following brontes' death. since the incident with the bear, mount olympus had experienced several moons of relative peace, marred only by a few internal hiccups. bellerophon grew more aggressive on several occasions, hyperion too lax. they feared the pupils had been lost when they took too long to return from a training hunt, and kratos' introduction to the group was worrying to perseus that the young brute might not survive his near-starvation. brontes' death made many of the members who knew him feel melancholy, aware that he was safe with the gods, but missing him more each day. perseus thought often of when brontes' breathing stopped, how his spirit was crushed for several moons, buoyed only by the help of his friends - tiresias made the workload easier to deal with while proteus ensured that perseus was rarely alone with his thoughts.
indent"i'm okay," perseus answered softly, though he wasn't sure if he was entirely convincing. he didn't even manage to convince himself. "tiresias is dealing with them," he added, as though that was to make it better. instead, he leaned further into proteus, who suggested that perseus lay down. "can you stay? even for a little bit." perseus finally felt his muscles relax when proteus agreed.
indentperseus closed his eyes, lulled by proteus' breathing pattern, though sleep didn't come and proteus finally spoke. "we had the meeting this morning," proteus murmured into perseus ear, who gave a soft sound of acknowledgement, to show that he was awake and listening though his eyes remained closed. "hyperion agreed to the hunting patrols, we're going to be voting on the head hunter later this moon."
indent"who are we deciding between?" perseus asked after a moment, cracking open one eye long enough to meet proteus' gaze.
indent"sarpedon, asterion, and andromache," proteus answered, expecting a response until he realized that perseus was likely waiting for him to say more. "i think it should be andromache," he whispered, daring to say it aloud.
indent"why didn't you tell alcides that?" perseus asked, shifting so that he was lying on his side, looking up at proteus, who shrugged in turn.
indent"because sarpedon and asterion would also be good choices," proteus said after a moment, then, "i shouldn't have the only say."
indentat that, perseus rolled his eyes. "who better to make the choice than you? hyperion doesn't know anything about them. i couldn't catch a mouse if i tried so i'd trust your judgement. and you're alcides' best friend, you wouldn't be his adviser if he didn't think you make good choices. give yourself some credit," perseus said, shifting again to bury his nose in proteus' shoulder. "you're great, proteus. tell alcides that you've made your choice. i'll back you."
indentproteus didn't speak, though his expression was distant and contemplative, as if weighing what perseus was saying. he opened his mouth to answer, but was cut off at the sound of pawsteps at the entrance. at first, perseus assumed that tiresias was returning, until he heard andromache's familiar voice. "perseus, are you here?" she called out, and perseus exchanged a look with proteus. without saying anything further, perseus rose and called andromache to him. the lithe dalmatian entered, though she paused at the sight of the pair, only to smile knowingly at them. "sorry, i hate to intrude," she said, shooting proteus a pointed look, though he flicked his ear at her. "i wanted to ask you - how would i know if i was going to be having pups?" when she finally asked, her expression shifted, becoming almost sheepish, and she scuffed the ground with her paw.
indent"asterion?" proteus asked at the same time that perseus stood and crossed to examine andromache. over the hunter's shoulder, perseus shot proteus a questioning look, who met his gaze evenly. andromache murmured that, yes, it was asterion who was her mate. all the while, proteus cursed mentally, knowing that andromache wouldn't be a good choice so long as she was going to be trying for pups and would be in the nursery for several moons.
indentafter perseus had finished examining andromache, telling her to come back in several days' time, the high priest looked back to proteus, speaking only when they could be sure that they were alone again. "what now?" perseus asked, padding forward when proteus merely shook his head. he opened his mouth to speak, but the scrape of paws came from the entrance and proteus sighed, touching his nose to perseus' cheek just as tireseias' voice called out. "in here," perseus answered.
indent"now," proteus said softly, offering tiresias a gentle smile over perseus' shoulder at the young shepard's arrival. "you need to rest since you've been up all night. the last thing we need are our healers getting sick." at that, perseus let out a huff of breath, and proteus laughed in turn, nosing him towards his bedding. "and i have some other things to do. but i'll check back with you later to make sure you've slept and eaten. you, too, tiresias," proteus said after a pause, pulling away from perseus and earning a grin from tiresias. just as he made to leave, however, his ears perked and he turned back to where perseus and tiresias were settling into their nests. "one last thing - i spoke to alcides and hyperion about pythia," proteus said, not missing perseus' expectant gaze and the way tiresias shifted his paws nervously. "we all agree that you can take pythia as a priestess or a healer when the time comes." without another word, proteus turned to let the healers speak among themselves and rest, but not before he saw tiresias jump up, excitedly, and perseus mouth his thanks to proteus.

Samuel's ear twitched. The dark shrubbery around him shivered, sending rustling sounds to alert the black dog that there was someone there. His jaw clenched around the bundle of herbs he was carrying, and his hair rose, as well his levels of fear and caution. His brown eyes widened to the size of the blocked sun above him. His dark pelt allowed him to blend in, but the high priest was sure the loud thumping of his heart could be heard by any creature in the forest. The shrubs rustled again and Samuel braced himself for a fight. Two dogs stumbled out of the bushes. Both were brown and obviously confused and exhausted. "W-where are we?" the female asked. The male stepped in front of her, clearly seeing Samuel and going on the defense. "And who are you?" The male growled assertively. 'Interesting accent.' Samuel noted before dipping his head respectfully. He set down the herbs and flicked an ear in peace. "My name is Samuel. I am the medic of the Ghost Mountain pack." He introduced, looking them up and down before speaking again "You look exhausted. I assume you've been traveling a long way. Why don't you come back to our camp.
I can help." The pair looked at each other, sharing silent thoughts. They seemed to agree, and Samuel gathered his herbs and led them to the clearing.

"So you were the alpha of a group?" Dean clarified. The female, Nike, nodded. "Yes, I was the leader of the Underdogs. Then those blasted humans came. It was crazy, I think all of us got out okay. Hayes and I met up a few days later, but I haven't seen anyone else since." Nike looked at her paws and Hayes comfortingly nudged her. "And where are you from, big boy?" Dean tilted his head. "Australia." Hayes said curtly "But I've been in this area for quite a while." Dean nodded and stood up "Well, I'm glad you're here. It's dangerous in the forest. You're lucky Samuel found you before anything else did." He started walking away, but looked over his shoulder. "You're welcome to stay as permanent members of Ghost Mountain. Stella will help you dig your nests." He flashed a smile and retreated to his den, and Samuel went to put away his herbs. Stella smiled at Nike and Hayes. "Hi, I'm Stella. I was the first member of the pack." She barked happily. Nike smiled and Hayes gave a half-enthused smirk. Stella jerked her head to the middle of the clearing. "C'mon. You can get a spot in the middle. It might take some getting used to, but you'll love it in no time!"

Garland waits with the Commanders and the Candie for the trainees to return from their assessments. Felix and Draxx were excellent in their training from what Candie and Brutus have reported. The air was chilled as winter crept closer to the land of the kennels. The dogs have been waiting at the abandoned railroad station for quite a while and Garland began to wonder when they planned on returning. Brutus began to pace from the cold and anticipation.
Niko growled "Quit pacing! They will return when they do."
Brutus looked at Niko, worry all across his face. "But what if they don't pass? What if the birds have all flown south for winter already?"
Chi calms Brutus. "You have trained Draxx well. He is a strong pup and the ancestors will be the ones who decide who's worthy. I'm sure he will return soon."
"You're right. I need to relax."
A while later, Draxx appears from the bushes with a songbird in his mouth. The Commanders congratulate him and Brutus's smile beams down on the trainee.
Candie asks "Where's Felix?"
"I don't know. He wandered off without me after I caught the bird. I think he's still taking the exam."
The group of dogs continue to wait until dusk. Garland scowls "Where is that pup?! He has failed his assessment so he must show up for his punishment."
Candie suggests "Maybe he got lost. We could send a search party for him."
Kalta replies "He's not lost. He knows these woods and has traveled many times in them. It's too late now to search. We can send a party first thing in the morning."
Garland commands "And when you find him, bring him to me. Failing is one thing, but going AWOL is a much more severe act. He should be held responsible for his actions."

The next day Candie, Kalta, Willow, and Ulysses search for Felix. They take half the day before Candie finds Felix hiding in some shrubs. She walks up to him and startles him. "There you are. I have been looking all over for you. Why didn't you return from your assessment yesterday?"
"I-I saw Draxx had already caught a bird and I knew I couldn't pass it without him. I tried, but all the birds flew away before I could get them. I'm scared Candie." Felix began to whine.
"Hush, you are alright. You know your mom misses you right?"
"I know, but I couldn't go back empty handed. Garland would kick me out if I failed."
"He won't kick you out. He just wants to talk about it. Maybe you could explain why you couldn't find a bird. But you do realize that you did flee and desert the kennel so you have to pay a punishment."
"I do?! What will Garland do with me?"
"I don't know, but we should head back before Garland gets even more upset."
The search party return with Felix and Garland judges him. "So, you have failed your assessment? Under normal circumstances you could beg to become an omega or be kicked off the territory. But you have also decided that that you couldn't live with your failure and attempted to evade punishment. Felix, you tried to run off in an attempt to prolong your assessment. I had to send a search party of dogs to find you. You couldn't even return on your own. And for your final punishment, you will have to battle for your place in this kennel." Felix's heart dropped and he felt weak. "Get some rest because in three days, you will fight for a place in this kennel. That is my final thought."
There was an upset in the kennel when they heard about the news. Stella was heartbroken and tried to beg Garland to reconsider, along with Candie and even Kalta strongly advised against it. But Garland refused and after 3 days, the kennel gathered at the battlegrounds for the first time.
Felix was shaking like a leaf and Stella licked him good luck. He walked into the clearing and tried to keep to the edge of the arena. He didn't know his opponent and looked at all of the faces of the kennel. Each held concern for the trainee. Garland emerged from the trees and entered the arena. He spoke "Felix. You have been summoned to fight and claim your place in the kennel. But with the failure at your assessment, there is one less opening in the ranks of Guardians. That is why I have invited Rodney to fight for your position." A large fawn rhodesian ridgeback that no one had seen before entered. "This battle will be held until one dog yields or is killed. The yielded dog will be sent to the Rose Grass territory and is to never return here." Garland leaves the arena and shouts "Begin!"
The battle did not last long. Rodney was larger than Felix and much stronger. Felix was thrown around and clawed at continuously. He was no match for Rodney. Rodney clamped his jaws around Felix's face and bit hard. Felix squealed and screamed "I yield! I give up!" Rodney dropped the trainee and the kennel was silent. Felix panted as he laid on the ground.
Garland took Felix's family and close friends to send him off. Garland, Felix, Stella, Draxx, Candie, and Stark reached the edge of the territory. Felix was still bleeding slightly and Stella cleaned him up. He was very weak and could barely walk. She placed her head on his back and whined loudly. "I'll miss you my baby. You fought hard today and I'm so proud of you." Draxx, Candie, and Stark said their goodbyes.
Garland said "I think it's about time you left."
Felix nodded and slowly limped his way off the territory. The dogs howled goodbyes to Felix and he limped his way to the unknown.

ohnoesThe faint sounds of pawsteps and harsh barking rang unevenly in Atlas' ears, every staggering step he took gradually put him into a daze. Atlas wasn't able to think properly, letting his paws move to wherever they had desired. An urge had suddenly proceeded for his legs to take him far, far away, to the lands where Atlas didn't even know of. From vast expanses to clustered forests, Atlas couldn't think for himself, it was just his mere paws leading the way. All of his senses were off, and his mind was not in the right place ─ his mind was lost. The only thing that proved he was still alive was an unknown repulsive scent that he forcefully inhaled, and seeing the beauty of the moonlight, glittering across the land.
ohnoesI'll be all right. His mind reassured, though it almost felt like someone else had fabricated that lie into Atlas' head. Or possibly, something else? Atlas didn't know, he was barely sure of anything at this point. Earlier, his mind had growled at him to stop, but his opposed thoughts had strangely disappeared. Now it was just his paws and the eerie fluttering of ravens, letting out the occasional screech every now and then. In fact, the sky had been filled with the glossy jet black birds, oddly enough. Atlas had rarely seen more than a couple ravens soaring about at the same time, let alone an entire flock worth of them.
ohnoesAtlas suddenly halted at a moderately covered forest, which seemed to be rather bare and scraped of their wildlife. But something unusual filled the air, something unpleasant. At last, Atlas finally began regaining consciousness and control over his mind once more once he had paused with his journey. "You've arrived." A voice snarled gruffly. The words made Atlas tremble, as he could almost feel the malicious tone pierce through him. It was only when the moonlight finally hit the other canine that made Atlas gasp in horror and shock.
ohnoes"You, you're ── !" Atlas blurted, unable to form any comprehensible sentence.
ohnoes"Indeed," the voice growled solemnly. His eyes glinted spitefully, pairing with his sinister grin, causing Atlas to quiver. "You are standing face to face with the almighty Treasach."

Maisie woke up in a panic ─ something was not right. She had soon discovered her hunch was right, as she was unable to locate Atlas anywhere. It appeared the King had simply disappeared overnight, as she was barely able to find any traces of Atlas at all. Somehow, all his scents were incredibly faint, and the only trail of Atlas' pawsteps she found led into a dead end. The sound of Maisie's scuttling pawsteps early in the morning was enough to bother Luminita into waking, who had been inquisitively watching Maisie as she bolted around camp, forced the frantic Admiral to come to a halt.
ohnoes"What may be bothering you, Maisie? You appear awfully troubled, and you may or may not have noticed that you're up quite early. A couple of dogs have woken up due to your distressed mumbling." Luminita informed her solemnly, which caused Maisie's face to become even more fretful than it already was. Luminita momentarily regretted her words, as they made Maisie much more uneasy. Though, the truth was Luminita already had a rough idea of what happened, thanks to Vitus and Vitale conversing with her in her dreams.
