Embergaze was quietly stashing away the herbs when Cannastar appeared, a huge rat in his jaws. ''Ah, that's really good.'' He remarked, with a smirk. ''Maybe you'll actually be able to convince me to stay!'' The tortoiseshell glanced up at the sky, watching a nearby group of vultures croaking quietly nearby; vultures usually only ever gathered around the dead and the way they were eyeing Cannastar made him feel uneasy. ''You okay, Canna?''

Unaware of the vultures, the ginger tom nodded. ''Yeah, just tired.'' Cannastar admitted, baring his fangs in a yawn. ''Why did you have to wake me up so early?'' Slumping at Embergaze's paws, Cannastar curled up in the shade. ''I don't usually wake up until it's around midnight.'' He admitted, with no shame and no fear; it wasn't as if he spent all of his time sleeping!

''So that you could hunt more than once.'' Embergaze pointed out, meeting Cannastar's mortified expression with a cool look. ''If you're starting a clan, you're going to have to hunt lots and lots and lots.'' The tortoiseshell pointed out, twitching his tail. ''Come on, cheer up.'' Embergaze glanced at the swaddle of cobwebs around his paw. ''At least we've got herbs! There's actually a patch of them nearby.''

Still complaining, Cannastar stretched and got up. ''I wish they'd given me wings instead of nine-lives.'' Glancing at Embergaze, Cannastar shook his head somewhat wistfully. ''Do you know how much faster and happier I'd be with wings? I could fly up to one of the statue's heads and sleep there without feeling like they're constantly judging me.'' The ginger tom glanced up at a looming and crumbling statue of Thoth, Egyptian god of wisdom and his current judge; wasn't his fault that Canna wasn't that bright, couldn't old beaky give him a break?

''I'm going patrolling, Ember!'' He called out, before leaping over a wall and racing through the dark desert.

Cindertail could hardly feel his legs. His brain was numb and he was staring blankly up at his leader. Around him, cats wept, shouted, and stood eerily still. Slatestar had just broken the news about the bear. Every other moon a cat would be sacrificed? Why? What did this tyrant have against them? The tom was pulled back into reality by a gentle nudge. It was Rabbitspark. The two had become close lately, and she looked extremely concerned. "Cindertail?" she whispered to him, examining his face "Are you ok?" Cindertail turned slowly to face her. He blinked. Something about her expression, the way she looked at him, how concerned she was for him, made him feel something he'd never felt before. Maybe it was the circumstances. At any moment he could be chosen to go and fight for his life and, most-likely, lose. Whatever it was, he felt a strong emotion piercing through the haze in his mind. His vision focused and his surroundings became less fuzzy. He shook himself mentally, blinking and giving a small smile. "I'm fine." he assured her "Rabbitspark, I-" The warrior was cut off by an outraged howl. It was Cougarleap. "Really?" He hissed "Slatestar! You're okay with this?" Slatestar's shoulder's sagged. He was standing face to face with the young, fiery warrior. Cindertail noticed his gaunt features. His leader was obviously tired and beaten. "Cougarleap." Slatestar sighed "I don't want to do this. But if we don't, we'll all die." Vipersun nodded. "It's a simple ethics concept." He pointed out "When you're given the choice to save a group at the expense of one, it's a clear answer. Besides, you have a chance to live. The Bear might be crazy, but he is fair. If you survive a day with him, he'll let you go." Cougarleap turned to the tom. "But three times?" He hissed "What if we run out of warriors?" Slatestar shook his head. "That won't happen." He stated firmly "We'll train harder, become stronger. BearClan will have the strongest warriors...and a few new rules given to me by StarClan to keep it that way." The Clan's jabbering quieted down, clearly interested in what the leader had to say. Slatestar bunched his muscles and leaped up onto the outcrop. "StarClan has been speaking with me for the past few days to tell me the rules they came up with to ensure our survival. To make sure every cat has a fair chance of being chosen, we will draw stones. As a part of a cat's warrior ceremony, they will receive three unique stones to be placed in a hollow. Every two moons, a single stone will be drawn. Whoever's stone that is will go. The next is obvious. Warriors will be the only ones to participate in the drawings. Apprentices, Elders, Queens, Medicine Cats, and, of course, kits, can be free until they become warriors. The second will be that Elders can only be made if you survived your three bear fights, are too old to fight, or are seriously injured. Also, from now on, I would like to keep the population conserved, that way we can have enough prey and training resources. Of course, we won't deny any new rogues or any strong cats willing to join our ranks. However," He gulped "Every couple can only have one litter. But, to be fair, if the litter somehow doesn't make it, or there's only one kit, you can have another. This also applies if you get a new mate, but you can only have two mates." Surprisingly, the Clan was silent. Slatestar flicked his ear, waiting to see if his cats had any comments before continuing "I know this next one might be odd, but I think the leader and deputy should have already completed their three trials. I know Sandstep and I have not, but this rule eliminates the chance that the leader or deputy dies." Eyes just blinked at him. Some had solemness and confusion. Others had fiery rage. But most surprisingly, many of them had acceptance. Dunewing got to his paws. "These rules are odd, I will agree." He started "But I'll follow them. Slatestar, you are trying to do the best for our Clan. It will be difficult to adapt, yes, but we'll get used to it." At his words, the cats seemed to realize what he was saying. They nodded. Slatestar heaved a sigh. "Thank you, Dunewing," he meowed sincerely "I'm glad you see what I'm tying to do. I don't want any of our Clanmates to be sacrificed, but we have to. I hope you all can forgive me for these rules, but I believe they're in our best interest." He turned around with one last nod, and disappeared into his den.

Quailthroat looked fondly at her kits. The only ones she would ever have. Well, with Batfur anyways, but she definitely didn't plan on getting a new mate. Her tail curled protectively around them. She knew they would grow into strong, brave, bear-fighting warriors. Her daughter, Elmkit, squealed hungrily. Smiling, the new mother gently nudged the black she-kit closer. Next to her brothers, she was the smallest, even though she and Talonkit were rather lose in size. Nightkit, however, was larger than both of them, much like his father. Even though Quailthroat was older than her mate, Batfur was larger, taller and more muscular. As if he had sensed her thoughts, the tom pushed through the vines that covered the rocky nursery entrance. "How are my favorite cats in the world?" He purred. The warrior walked over to his family and settled beside his mate. "Well, I'm doing fine, a bit tired, but fine." Quailthroat sighed happily "Your kits, however, are feisty. Really hungry and noisy." Batfur chuckled and nuzzled his mate "Yea sorry, my brothers and I were always like that as kits. Well, Cougarleap still is, but..." The father trailed off when he notices his mate's glossy, tear-filled eyes. Batfur's smile dropped and he sighed. "What's wrong my love?" he asked, resting his head on her head. Quailthroat let out a quiet sob. "I just can't imagine losing you or our kits to the bear." She meowed "I wish this wasn't happening." Batfur licked his mate's nose and nuzzled her, pulling her close and pushing against her cheek. "I know." he whispered "But listen, I'll be here for you. For our kits. I love you. I will do everything I can to protect you. I promise you I'll never let you go..."

Seven mentors all looked delighted as they sat under the cloudy sky. Seven mentors, all proudly awaiting the ceremony, watched their apprentices step forward. Featherrise glanced towards where Birdlight was, happiness in her sightless gaze, Verglasrise looked at his mentor in excitement, the fur along Gorserise's spine bristled in anticipation, Rushrise calmly sat, his starry eyes betraying his emotions, Grassrise hid his emotions as always and looked around and Leafrise and Mossrise shuffled their paws as they waited. All the cats, particularly Solarspark and Aspenleaf, were proud of the seven apprentices who had completed their assessments with ease, and couldn't wait to see them as warriors. Even the newcomer named Sedgebreeze was curious but happy and even Lionscorch seemed happy.

"Featherrise, Verglasrise, Gorserise, Rushrise, Grassrise, Leafrise and Mossrise, you have trained hard to become the Guardian and warriors of CosmoClan. I call upon the StarColony to look down on these apprentices who have followed your code."
Thornstride's mouth opened as if to make a comment about he superbly passed his assessment until Swiftsky's stern eye glared at him and he fell silent.
Do you promise to uphold the paths layed out before you and to follow the warrior's code at the StarColony's will at the cost of your life to fight and defend your clan?" the leader finished, he twitching tail betraying the fact that she was excited as Verglasrise.

"I do," chorused the apprentices, bowing their heads. Only Grassrise hesitated, and the eagle eye of Lyrastar was at once upon him. After a moment's thought and a few shared looks with the Guardians, she began.
"Featherrise, you have shown to have great intelligence a d a knowledge of things beyond normal sight, so from now on you shall be known as Featherfall. At Sunhigh tomorrow you will go to the Sunjaw to receive your full status from the StarColony." The white apprentice shone with pride, her silvery tail swaying happily and with an intense perseverance as she walked over to meet her mentor. Lyrastar turned to Verglasrise, a smile plastered on her face. "Verglasrise, you have shown to have bravery and a mind that thinks beyond the problems of the clan and turns them into something creative, so from now on you shall be known as Verglas-strike." the young warrior nodded, holding his head up high. "For your kind yet sharp determination and skill, Gorserise, you shall now be known as Gorsetalon." The prickly daughter of Aspenleaf purred loudly, Andrew she stepped away with a new spring in her step. Her tabby brother walked forwards, ready to receive his warrior name. "Rushrise, you are an independent and strong young warrior, so you shall be known as Rushtail." Silently, Rushtail walked back to the crowd, his eyes still shining. "Grassrise, for your forethought in the face of danger and your speed that your paws and your mind race, you shall be known as Grassleap." Grassleap smirked and have the newer warriors a look. "Leafrise, for your energy and enthusiasm, I name you Leafpounce," Bouncing off, the ginger tom nearly tripped in excitement. "Mossrise, for your courage and patience to keep learning, your name will be Mosstooth," Lyrastar ended, breathing deeply.

The seven former apprentices grinned. Seven former mentor's took a deep sigh of relief, and the camp went to their usual routine. The camp was calm, despite the floods, and all was peaceful. Only one cat was plotting, and surprisingly, it wasn't Lionscorch or Yewheart.

"Moose, Stitch." Algernon's sharp voice cut across camp, sinking into the cracks and crevices among the ruins his cats called home. The summons was quick and the response was quicker; nearly identical siblings pushed and shoved each other out of the way to be the first at his front. Good. The power he held already was all Scatteredscales had promised. "I want the two of you accompanying me on a hunting patrol. Our prey stock is pathetically low and there are matters to discuss." Stitch kept his expression tightly guarded, nodding a clipped affirmative as his sibling chirped her agreement.

Once across the water, Algernon took the forefront, guiding his young companions through the thick woodland until he stood in a great clearing. In its center stood a great pile of red stones, gleaming with the afternoon sun. "This," algernon began, "is the Sun-Eye. Our heart. Every breath we breathe comes through this stone from our great Mother, Scatteredscales. She commands that I lead, but also that I stand beside my Court of Moons. Pepper has joined us as the first of my council; my Waning Moon. There remains three positions; my Full Moon, my Waxing Moon, and my Half Moon. Today one of you will become my gleaming Half Moon." He'd hardly finished speaking when Stitch spoke up. "I will. Haven't I shown myself to be helpful in the time I've -" Moose abruptly cut in, physically shouldering her slimmer brother aside. "I've been here longer than he has, Algernon! Scatteredscales brought me to you first, doesn't that mean that she intended me to be your Moon?" Stitch snarled a rebutle, snapping his jaws at the back of his sisters neck until the pair fell into a squabbling pile, spitting insults and challenges until - "Enough." Algernon snapped, giving a great lash of his tail. Muttering and hissing, the pair fell in line. "You will each prove yourselves to me and our great Mother. I brought you here to hunt, and so you shall. Bring me your bounty and provide for our family. After that, return. Now go."

Finished with their tireless hunting, the sibling pair found themselves before Algernon once again, bounties laid out before them. There was a victor, confirmed by their leader before the brilliant red stones that stood as a connection between the Shaded Skies and their scaled deity. "I don't need to announce my victor," Algernon hummed, watching each sibling in turn. "But this is not all that decides my Court. As a pair you will patrol our borders. Competition is not more important than keeping us safe. Shoo."

Pepper slid from his rubble-protected den at the beckoning of his leader; a great crowing call that sat shrill in his ears. The tortoiseshell tom watched curiously as a trio entered camp; Algernon and the bickering siblings he often treated for small scratches and nicks. They carried a bounty of prey, though one looked sour in the face. "Pepper," Algernon called, "as a member of the Moon Court you stand as witness to this challenge." Pepper's nose crinkled slightly, confused, but he dipped his head in agreement anyway. At the blue tom's summons, he stood just at his side atop a large pile of debris overlooking a clear patch of land in camp. "I must leave shortly after the challenge is concluded, so I leave them in your paws until I return, Pepper." The tom rumbled in his ear, earning a curt nod from Pepper as he watched Moose and Stitch curiously. Neither of the siblings seemed to understand what they were doing, though they both seemed tense and snappish when they met each other's stares.

"The honor of being my Half Moon is not one earned by hunting or strolling a border," Algernon said, eyes glittering as he watched the pair. They're kits. The thought fluttered through Pepper's mind. Hardly old enough to choose what prey they want to eat, let alone whatever this is. They could be considered adults, he reasoned, but seeing the pair bristling at one another unsettled him. "It's an honor earned and proven in blood." A deep growl crept into Algernon's voice as he spoke, tail lashing against the stone. "You both desire to stand at my side. Fight for it. But first - my victor." His tone softened, almost unsettlingly in Pepper's eyes, as he leapt from the rock and approached the sibling who had brought more prey on their back. "You have shown great ability in providing for your family. A trait i place high value upon for a cat who is to be my Half Moon. Fight with all your ability, both of you." As if a switch had been flipped, the mighty blue tom whirled around and slammed his paw across the face of the opposing sibling, claws extended as they raked across their forehead - drawing blood and sending the younger cat screeching back in panicked alarm, blood dripping into their eyes. "Now you know injustice. Unfair bias. Fight despite it, earn your right to survive." His voice rose in volume, sending a shiver down Pepper's spine as he leapt back up to his perch. "Now," he roared, "battle!"

The forest of stars was silent. Even Wolfstar padding in the soft grass had no sound. He couldn't understand why he was here, he never dreamed of Starclan unless he was at Moonstone. "Hello?" He called into the darkness and was replied with silence. Nervousness clamped tight on Wolfstar and he swallowed. Suddenly, there was a noise and a dark shape flew out from the forest, its beady red eyes locked on the black and white leader. He gasped and ducked his head just in time to avoid having his eyes pecked out by the massive raven. He jerked up and turned to watch the raven beat it's wings against the soft blue sky, cawing angirly at the moon. Then another shape materialized from the shadows: a bear. It had large fangs that dripped red liquid and red eyes. Wolfstar watched in horror as the bear leaped and caught the raven in its jaws. As soon as it landed, the raven and wolf disappeared into shadow.

When the images reappeared, the bear, now covered in what Wolfstar could only assume was blood, stood snarling at him. It saw him. Wolfstar's pelt puffed up and he let his claws extend. The bear met his challenge with a snarl but did not advance, so neither did he. Before either of the challengers could advance, another shape materialized. A gray form of a cat, no larger than Tigerpaw, formed in front of the massive animal. It looked back at Wolfstar with empty black eyes, then turned back to the wolf. They stared at one another for what seemed like days before disintegrating.

"The darkness draws near, leader." A sweet voice said in his ear. "When the last drop of Raven's blood falls, the clan will be consumed by shadow. The only one who can defeat the darkness is the one who fostered it." There was rustling in the trees. Then Wolfstar's eyes snapped open.

"Relax, Russentnose!" Honeygaze hissed at the squirming warrior as she pressed the cobwebs deeper into the wound on her shoulder. Russentnose had been injured in the attack with the badger and Honeygaze was not in the mood to care for her. There were only scraps of cobweb available to use (it barely counted) and her belly was trying to kill her. There was a burning pain deep in her pelt, like it knew that what was going on was forbidden. Forbidden. The world cut into her and she shook her head. "You'll need a day's rest. No patrol." She muttered to Russentnose and turned away just in time to grit her teeth against another burst of pain.

"Whatever you say, Honey." Russentnose meowed back. "Are you alright?"

"Fine." Honeygaze said shortly and instantly regretted it. Taking a deep breath, she turned back to her friend. She said more softly: "I'm fine." And she tried to believe it. Before Russentnose could say anything else, Wolfstar poked his head into the den. Honeygaze's pelt prickled when she saw the fear in the leader's usually mellow eyes. "Wolfstar," she said in surprise. "Is everything alright?"

Wolfstar noticed Russentnose staring at him and straightened his neck. "I need to speak with you." He said, then added, "Urgently." Honeygaze dipped her head and went with him into his den. There he dropped his ears and tail. "I had a vision from Starclan last night. A prophecy or omen." Something in her heart clenched but Honeygaze just nodded, urging him to continue. In what seemed like seconds, Wolfstar told her of the strange dream and the prophecy.

"And you had this last night?" Her voice cracked slightly and she cursed in her head. Wolfstar's eyes widened but he didn't say anything. Instead, he nodded. This was too much. Too much to think about. Too much. Honeygaze gritted her teeth against another stab of pain. "I will keep an eye out for omens, Wolfstar. But we need to wait for more from Starclan before we do anything." And without another word, she left the leader ans disappeared back into the medicine den.

They all looked at him the same way. Pity. Confusion. Hate. It wasn't anything new to Spiderkit. "Don't pay attention to them." Larkkit would tell him and shoot a dirty look back with her blazing eyes. What she lacked in height, she made up for in intensity. But though he was four moons old, he knew better. Cats like them were bound to be looked at that way. His mother often told him that he was special-that he had been chosen to have a gift.

He knew better.

When night looked in the forest, a lone figure fought her way through the underbrush. Her teeth were gritted against the pain in her stomach, a twisting unbearable pain, but she knew she had to keep going. It wasn't safe yet. So she went farther into the woods until she flopped over in an abandoned Fox den. It stunk of the creature but Honeygaze couldn't find it in herself to care. The contractions rattled her entire body and she tried to focus her mind on other things.

Lynxclaw's eyes. Ravens flying overhead. Kits playing in the nursery. Starry cats snarling at her.

Pain.

Pain.

Her kits...her forbidden kits.

Hellboy watched as Venom moved around the twoleg junk in their new den. "What are you even doing?"
"I'm making it ready for new cats! This place is a mess, no one would want to live here except me and some rat." She said, flicking her eyes up at him.
"Remember that this rat beat you at that little fight, so mind your manners, girly." He told her. All he got from her is a simple eye roll. 'She works hard for a young cat.' Normally, a cat her age would still be with their siblings or hanging around their parents. However, she was standing on her own two feet, trying to start something new. 'She may be weak in a fight, but I'll still stand right by her and protect her vision.' He thought with a smirk. Of course, he would never tell her that.
"Don't just stand around thinking about how great and mighty you are, help get this stuff towards the back of the boat. Never know, might need some of it later." She told him, grabbing some kind of metal stick-thing.
"What about the border patrols? Or even hunting? Those bullfrogs aren't going to last forever." He reminded her, laughing slightly at her haste.
"Oh! It's already past dusk! You go out on the border patrol, I'll move this back and then get to hunting already!" She ran with the twoleg junk in her jaw, so Hellboy simply strolled out, making his way for the edge of the border to start marking his scent.
