As Carolina Shepherds have grown into a more popular breed over the past few years, the Blue Ridge Club has started seeing some health issues pop up. We’ve noticed a few cases of Degenerative Myelopathy, Dwarfism, Elbow Dysplasia, Hereditary Deafness, Hip Dysplasia, and Progressive Retinal Atrophy in the breed, so we are now offering genetic testing to help owners and breeders make informed breeding decisions.

Dogs must be health tested in order to participate in competitions and SAR.

Dogs do not need to be health tested to be bred, however it is strongly encouraged!

All dogs prior to this update receive free health testing! Dogs with the ID#s A-0001-A-0441, B-0001-B-0318, and C-0001-C-0267 are eligible to receive free health testing. Existing dogs may carry up to a maximum of two of these health conditions, however we’re rolling for them at 85% unaffected and 15% carrier so it’s unlikely a dog will get more than one. Additionally, existing dogs will not receive poor elbow or hip scores.

Each Carolina Shepherd owner gets 10 free health tests. They have already been added to your bank and may be used on new dogs AND new litters.

It costs one SAR point for one health test. A health test may be used on one adult dog OR one entire litter of puppies. To health test your dog, please fill out the form below. Remember, dogs with the ID#s A-0001-A-0441, B-0001-B-00318, and C-0001-C-0267 are health tested for free! If the dog does not fall into this category one of your free health tests in your bank will be used. If you've already used your free health tests we will deduct one SAR point from your bank to run the test. You may also buy health tests at the bank.

Degenerative Myelopathy
Degenerative Myelopathy is a serious recessive neurological condition seen in older dogs where they gradually lose their ability to walk. Dogs with this condition cannot participate in agility, conformation, tracking, or SAR, but may participate in obedience competitions. Due to the severity of this condition, affected dogs will be sterilized.

Dwarfism
Dwarfism is a recessive condition noted at adolescence when a puppy does not grow to adult size. The gene present in Carolina Shepherds is not associated with any health risks, however dogs with dwarfism cannot participate in conformation or SAR.

Hereditary Deafness
Hereditary deafness is a recessive condition where dogs are born deaf in both ears and is not linked to inbreeding, extreme white or solid white markings, or merle markings. Dogs that are deaf may not participate in conformation or SAR, but they can participate in agility, obedience, and tracking competitions.

Progressive Retinal Atrophy
Progressive retinal atrophy is a recessive condition noted as the dog ages where they gradually lose their eyesight in both eyes. Dogs that are blind may not participate in agility, conformation, SAR, or tracking, but they can participate in obedience competitions.

Elbow & Hip Dysplasia
Elbow dysplasia is a condition where part of the dog’s elbow joint doesn’t develop normally, while hip dysplasia is a condition where part of the dog’s hip joint doesn’t develop normally. A dog receives a score for their elbows AND a score for their hips from 1%-100% that grades how well their elbow joints have developed, with 1% being bad and 100% being good. Scores are grouped in the categories of Poor (1-25%), Fair (26%-50%), Good (51%-75%), and Excellent (76%-100%). Dogs that have a poor elbow OR poor hip score may not participate in agility, conformation, or SAR, but may participate in obedience and tracking.

The elbow & hip scores of dogs are strongly influenced by their parents, however there is a small amount of variability (+/- 5%). Both positive and negative conformation traits will affect the final elbow & hip score of the dog. Positive conformation traits add to the score range and also remove the negative variability, while negative conformation traits subtract from the score range and remove the positive variability.

We will go through a couple of examples of how elbow & hip scores are calculated.

Scenario 1: Parent 1 and Parent 2 produce a puppy. Parent 1 has a elbow score of 60% and a hip score of 65%, while Parent 2 has an elbow score of 70% and a hip score of 45%.
Our range for elbow score is 60%-70% and our range for hip score is 45-65%.
We then add in some variability - there’s a chance for the puppy to be better, or worse, than their parents by 5%, so their elbow score range is now 55%-75%, while our range for hip score is 40%-70%.
A random number generator (RNG) is now used to give us a final number for the elbow score (67%) and hip score (52%).

Scenario 2: Parent 1 and Parent 2 produce a puppy. Parent 1 has a elbow score of 60% and a hip score of 65% and has the positive conformation trait Shiny Coat (+5 to conformation), while Parent 2 has an elbow score of 70% and a hip score of 45%.
Our range for elbow score is 60%-70% and our range for hip score is 45-65%.
We then add in some variability - there’s a chance for the puppy to be better, or worse, than their parents, but in this case Parent 1 has the Shiny Coat trait (+5 to conformation), so we increase the variability AND add the value (+5) to the range! Their elbow score range is now 60%-80% (+5% variability AND +5% from Shiny Coat Trait), while our range for hip score is 45%-75% (+5% variability AND +5% from Shiny Coat Trait).
RNG is now used to give us a final number for the elbow score (72%) and hip score (61%).

Scenario 3: Parent 1 and Parent 2 produce a puppy. Parent 1 has a elbow score of 60% and a hip score of 65% and has the negative conformation trait Major Fault (-10 to conformation, -2 to sports & SAR), while Parent 2 has an elbow score of 70% and a hip score of 45%.
Our range for elbow score is 60%-70% and our range for hip score is 45-65%.
We then add in some variability - there’s a chance for the puppy to be better, or worse, than their parents, but in this case Parent 1 has the Major Fault trait (-10 to conformation, -2 to sports & SAR), so we decrease the variability AND subtract the value (-10) from the range. Their elbow score range is now 45%-70% (-5% variability AND -10% from Major Fault Trait), while our range for hip score is 30%-65% (-5% variability AND -10% from Major Fault Trait).
RNG is now used to give us a final number for the elbow score (53%) and hip score (44%).
