The sleigh lurched violently sideways, Chalk grabbing the railing to prevent herself from sliding or bumping into anyone. The Goo Grinch finally caught them while they were hundreds of feet in the air, and now everyone had a choice: Do they try to console it? Or do they fight?
Chalk’s normally carefree demeanor was nowhere to be seen. Right now, she was in deep thought over the conversation happening between Ugin, Rudolph and Apple.
“Wait, Rudolph!” She said, holding up a paw, “I changed my mind about what we should do,”
Chalk turned to look at the angry goo. The
goo, meaning that if this thing had existed for far longer than Rudolph has been alive and has become a Goomas legend, then that means the Goo Grinch hasn’t been able to grow into a Goob for that long. Had he never been able to build his personality and preferences past hating Goomas for all this time? Had he ever been given the chance to?
Old anxieties crept back in as Chalk followed this line of thought. She remembered her own time as a goo, just barely. It was a confusing and indecisive time, to be expected to create yourself after just coming into existence. She was quite bad at it herself, having spent a few more years than her peers to ‘grow up’ and find what she liked most.
Even now, I can’t say I know myself very well, she thought, peering down at her charm enclosed in her fist.
But...At least I am trying. She shook her head and turned her attention back to the Goo Grinch with renewed determination. Pushing down the fear that the Goo Grinch will return her to goo, she shouldered her way closer to him.
“Hey,” she spoke in a leveled tone, “You still haven’t found your way yet, huh? Is that why you’re such a grump?”
She paused, not really expecting an answer.
“I know what it’s like. It’s the worst feeling in the world to see everyone else having fun and leaving you behind. I know what that’s like, but--,” she felt a weight in her hand as her charm summoned something light and crumbly, then something thin but silky, and thirdly something that was most definitely a folded sheet of paper.
She held up her hand towards the Goo Grinch. It was a
Chalk-olate chip cookie that she made at the bakery,
a ribbon she decorated her Goomas tree with, and a
star chart of a dinosaur constellation.
Her eyes widened, momentarily shocked by the random assortment, but soon enough she understood.
“But...Would you like to try to find something you like? Just this once?”
She squeezed her eyes shut, not knowing if this was a terrible idea or not. Would the others on this sleigh join her in this? Will the Goo Grinch ignore her peace offering?
It’s okay, she thought to herself,
even if I get turned back into goo, I will know what to do this time. It won’t be like it was before.
