"Hello," they said, a bit more confidently. "I'm Guilla."

The luminous werm doesn’t respond. Not when Guilla speaks to them the first time, and not when he clears the assembly to give them some privacy. The werm just stares and stares out into the wasteland. Guilla can almost hear the two bystanders stage whispering to each other: ‘What’s so fascinating about all that dirt?’ among other, more rude things that he won’t repeat.

Maybe they’re going about this all wrong. Guilla follows the werm’s gaze to the horizon. Maybe the question isn’t ‘What do they see?’ but rather ‘What do they want to be seen by?’

Moonlight burns off the face of the old road sign. It’s a little distracting in the corner of Guilla’s eyes. He has to really squint to focus on the horizon.

That’s when he sees it—a dim, flickering light through the distant curtains of dust.

Guilla turns. But before he can say anything, there’s the distinctive sound of ferret feet skittering through the sand. A dark shape leaps up the signpost, and—

vvvVVVVVRREEP!

The Fetch collides with the great big werm, who lets out a noise like a startled theremin. He wraps his arms around their thick neck and scrabbles his back paws into any foothold he can get.

“Gotcha!” He grins. “Thanks for being baa-ɐ-ait, grub.”

The werm bucks, and the force of the movement is so strong that the Fetch loses his foothold. He lets out an undignified squeak as he swings around to the opposite side of their neck like a loose lanyard. The shift in weight is too much for the poor sign. It buckles, the big werm slips, and they both topple into the dust below.
