Terminology

Genotype Format


A locus/B locus/C locus/D locus/E locus/H locus/I locus/K locus/M locus/S locus/T locus/U locus/L locus


    Terminology

    Eumelanin is black and brown pigment and includes black/blue/liver/lilac.
    Pheomelanin is red and yellow pigment and includes dark red/red/tan/cream/silver/offwhite.
    Locus is the location of a gene in a chromosome (genotype for our use) such as the A locus versus B locus.
    Loci is the plural form of locus.
    Allele is a variant form of a gene, such as sable versus agouti which are on the same locus.

      notes: similiar to a saddle, only lacking shading on the flank and characterized by eumelanin points on the legs

      notes: merle will be on the points only while brindle will show on the pheomelanin color only

      notes: similar to a more minimal saddle and characterized by the white guard hairs on the saddle

      alpine combinations
      atap - (minimal) alpine -- alpine without the black points, may be more minimal alpine
      ➛ akap - extreme kiharara -- alpine combined with kiharara creates a unique pattern
      asap - saddle alpine -- alpine but with shading on the flank, creating a full saddle with black points
      apa - extreme alpine -- alpine with extended eumelanin shading
      ➛ apat+ - (minimal) alpine -- alpine without the black points, may be more minimal alpine
      apas+ - saddle alpine -- alpine but with shading on the flank, creating a full saddle with black points
      apawd - blanketed wildtype -- alpine coloration with added wildtype

      notes: belt is unbroken covering the shoulders to the flank

      ➛ based off of the striped skunk

      notes: Sst minimal striped white is a thin strip on the withers

      S+/H+/EmgEmg+ - stained
      ➛ a mutation affecting the S + H loci and homozygous Emg allele, staining the white to black
      ➛➛ x x x


      notes: depicted in a genotype by a '+' after the allele pair

      Tsr_ - rainfall
      ➛ flecks of white anywhere on a collie's coat, usually on the back and down the sides
      ➛➛ x x x


      notes: rainfall is dominant with one copy, for example a collie can have both rainfall and roan "TsrTr"

      ___________________________________________________________________________________________


      L + l + lc coat type
      ➛ smooth is dominant L_ and can carry a rough or curly gene
      ➛ rough is ll or llc, which is a rough coat carrying curly coat
      ➛ curly is recessive lclc


      notes: smooth coats are the most common, while curly is the rarest
