Badger Buddies Ranch ERRP Intercollegiate Competition
Intercollegiate horse shows allow college students the chance to compete in equestrian competitions at a lower cost than normal. You do not need your own horse in order to participate; each school has their own home base barn and will provide horses for the competition for all riders. This particular show will be taking place at Badger Buddies Ranch, which is kind enough to let local college students utilize these horses for lessons and competitions. Different horses will be offered for each level of competition based on their trained specialty and their level of experience as well as the riders.
There will be a flat equitation portion in the morning and over fences (jumping) equitation will take place in the afternoon. For flat courses, a judge will call out for the different gaits, changes of rein, halts, and to line up at the end of your class. For competitive classes where it is hard to decide on a winner, you may be asked to back up your horse, answer basic knowledge questions, or a variety of other movements deemed appropriate for your skill level. The over fences portion is not timed, and the objective is to have a clean round. For all classes, the rider will be judged on their form, or equitation.
For ease of participation and judging, each category will be split into either beginner or advanced. The horses available to be assigned to riders will be listed below each class type and a short description of their personality will be provided. There will be no warm up portion before your class, so study this description well!
**(Unlike the realistic competitions, the horse you “draw” to ride will not really be randomized, you are allowed to choose which horse you would like to write about or draw within each category they are in.)
Below is the list of all horses selected for each set of classes based on their skill set and temperament. Please click on each horse to read their description so you can think about the best way to go about your rides and courses. Some horses will be available for multiple sections of classes.

Prompt Ideas
Beginner Flat/Over Fences:
Since you’re a beginner, this must be one of your first times competing, in this type of discipline at least! How exciting!
-How do you handle your pre-show jitters?
-How do you feel once you met your horse and get in the saddle?
-What thoughts are going through your head as you begin your class?
-Is someone here to support you other than your coach and your team?
-Do you need your coach’s guidance called out to you during your class?
-How do you feel when your class is over?
-Are you excited to compete in your next show?
-How do you wish to train and practice in order to improve for next time?
Advanced Flat/Over Fences:
This certainly isn’t your first rodeo (heh)! I think you’ll have much more fun with these skilled, more challenging horses.
-What are you and the horse struggling with?
-How do you address your concerns during your class in order to calm yourself and the horse down?
-Are you and the horse eventually able to connect as you progress through your class?
-Does your class go as you would have hoped?
-Did the horse act out/spook/etc.?
-Were you able to finish your class?
-Did you go off-course (for over fences)? Did you try again or give up?
Please remember that you are only allowed to compete in ONE flat class and ONE over fences class as you cannot be both a beginner and an advanced flat rider at the same time, for example. Also, even if your writing contains penalties, falls, off-courses, etc. this will NOT effect how you place in this competition, so please do not be afraid to write about struggling with the horse. All writing prompts should be minimum 400 words. Art pieces should be clean lined, colored, and preferably show a majority of the horse rather than a head shot. Art pieces may be submitted with a brief explanation of the scenario, 150 word maximum.
Prizes!
The ever exciting part of competitions, the ribbons awarded for all of the hard work of the horse and rider! Each class will have the opportunity to win these ribbons. These ribbons can be displayed within your barns to show the hard work you have put into riding. The ribbon you win may be placed on one of your horse’s pages if you wish, as the short time spent riding the horses here at Badger Buddies Ranch reflect the time and effort you spent training with them. Ribbons will be available for all who enter, but ribbons after third place will be participant ribbons.
