aaaaThe world was pounding by the time they made it into the jıldız uyuguna - the cave - Star Cave.
aaaa"Are you sure this is the place?" a Rockruff said, panting. He winced as the pounding in his head increased. They'd been chasing after a Goomy the whole day and he'd taken a rather hard Body Slam to the head when it escaped.
aaaaA Shinx nodded, a confident fire blazing in his eyes. "I know he's here," the electric-type said. He glanced at his partner and winced. "It'll only be a few more hours, then we'll go straight back home," he reassured.
aaaaThe Rockruff sighed. 'Only a few more hours' was assuming that the Goomy didn't break away from them for the third time. For Arceus' sake, why didn't Goomy have feet? Or arms? At least a solid body? It was impossible to keep those things tied up.
aaaa"Whatever," the Rockruff muttered bluntly, ready to get this mission over with.
aaaaThe team of two walked into the cave; the Rockruff's eyes kept falling to the floor. Meanwhile, the Shinx kept his guard up for both of them.
aaaaStar Cave was nestled deep in the woods. Few pokemon knew about it and even less would dare try to find it. The woods were infested by feisty Ariados, but if Alpha and Beta knew anything, it would be about feisty Ariados. It was how they met, after all.
aaaaAlpha - the Shinx - walked carefully. The cave floor was cold under his paws; his eyes glowed a faint golden color in the dark.
aaaaSuddenly. a bout of hysterical laughter echoed through the cave. "Are you insane? Trying to follow me, Goomy the Great? I will be you each and every time!" the voice cried maniacally.
aaaaBeta - the Rockruff - winced again at the noise. He huffed and prodded Alpha, "Get him to shut up," he breathed quietly.
aaaaAlpha tore his eyes away from Beta and looked in the direction of Goomy. "If anyone's insane, it's you," he called out to the purple-ish, glob-like pokemon. "We're all tired, Goomy. Just get over here and get in the sack." Since handcuffs wouldn't work on the gooey pokemon and neither would tying him up with a rope, the Guild had settled on capturing Goomy in a bag. They'd tried having him surrender, but after his second escapade, Alpha and Beta weren't taking any chances.
aaaaFor a second, there was silence. The only thing Goomy was good at was escaping. He really didn't stand a chance in battle, unless he planned on evolving or talking Guild Omikron's heads off. Plus, unlike the two pokemon that had been sent to capture him, Goomy couldn't see in the dark.
aaaaFinally, the wrongdoer cried, "Never!" His voice echoed stubbornly through the caves and Beta growled in frustration.
aaaa"Why didn't we take any other mission but this?" he asked his guild leader in a spiked whisper. "I want to go home."
aaaaAlpha threw his head back in irritation and called out, "Okay, Rufflet!"
aaaaGoomy stumbled back, then realized that he hadn't been attacked. But - what Rufflet? While the Goomy was still recovering from his stumble, a flash of light blinded him, then... darkness.
aaaaThe flapping of wings filled the cave.
aaaaBeta looked up from the floor to see Rufflet in the air, a sack held tightly between his talons.
aaaa"Did I come in time?" the eagle pokemon asked.
aaaaBeta sighed and Alpha rolled his eyes. "Yes, yes you did. Good job, Rufflet. Next time, you won't need to hire a guild. If Goomy ever comes back, you'll know what to do. Just do it yourself - stuff him in a bag."

"Skiddo's a grass type with a weakness to ice attacks, so your new friend there would be mighty helpful..." Sheriff Matt D' shifted his wings restlessly and leaving the proposal to hang in the air between them like a storm cloud. Across the desk, all three members  of The Hodgepodge Gang simply stared. It had been several months since their last pass through Swerve City, and the place hadn't changed much. Same 'ol crowds, same 'ol streets, same 'ol Matt D. It hadn't been hard for them to find his office once they heard he was looking for them. Though by now Noodles was beginning to wonder why they'd bothered.
"That may be sir, but as I explained before - we're not into this kind  of work. Plus, while Lorn may indeed have a type advantage, he's not a battler. He's a dancer..." From the corner of her eye, she saw the Froslass nod solemnly. "...and any advantage he may have is canceled out by my and Oodles' grass WEAKNESS. We were lucky that Cherrim didn't put up a fight!"
Matt sighed. "Look. I know I'm asking a lot. But I really appreciated your help and I could use it again." At this point the Braviary got to his feet and began pacing back and forth, his eyes staring out blankly from his face. "The Cherrim was only a scout. Now that the rest of his gang's showed up..." Matt stopped in his tracks and shrugged listlessly before turning to make eye contact with each of the three Pokemon he was hoping to convince. "Swerve doesn't stand a chance unless we all stand together."
Oodles frowned. "Why do I get the feeling that this is becoming a bad habit?"

Several hours of planning and preparation later found The Hodgepodge Gang - along with sheriff Matt and his deputy Festus the Mudbray - picking their way toward the beach. When they hit the waterline, Noodles and Oodles wordlessly broke away from the group and sloped into the waves. They'd approach the cave where Skiddo was hiding from the ocean. At nearly the same moment, Matt also broke away. He was to circle around and approach the cave from the west. This left Lorn and Festus standing on the sand side-by-side, watching their respective friends vanish into the distance. Once they felt enough time had passed to allow Noodles, Oodles and Matt to get into position, they began picking their way down the beach as cautiously as they could, in the direction of the cave. Not a word passed between them.

Once, they came across a sentry. A swift knock over the head with Fastus' forehoof took them out of the action without alerting anyone else.

Finally, after what seemed like an eternity to Lorn, a shadow broke away from the rocks on the far side of the beach and resolved itself into Matt. "Got two lookouts." He whispered harshly, trying to be heard over the waves, but only by his associates.
"Gout one ourselves, Matt. How many do you recon are left inside?"
"If the reports we've been getting are correct, probably three. Maybe four."
"Wonderful." This was Lorn, who hadn't been too thrilled with the mission from the outset, and was beginning to have serious doubts about his ability to actually be useful.
Matt stared at him for a moment. Then, when the Froslass failed to offer further comment, he turned to his deputy and smiled grimly. "Let's get this show on the road."

The two groups parted again, with Lorn and Festus hunkering down behind a rock while Matt crept closer to the mouth of the cave. By peeking out around the edge of his shelter, Lorn could just see the sheriff as he scooped several stones up from the sand and hurled them into the darkness for all he was worth. Suddenly, shouts rang out. Angry shouts. Several moments later, Three Pokemon he'd never seen before came rushing out into the dim moonlight. Matt had ducked behind a convenient boulder to the left of the cave entrance. They didn't see him, and ran right past. After the brightness of their campfire, the the darkness of the beach was even more intense than it was for Lorn, whose eyes had become more or less adapted to the gloom, so before they were more than halfway to the water the three startled outlaws were forced to stop lest they crash headlong into a rock. One of them - he thought it was the Skiddo they were after - called out vainly for the unconscious sentries.

It was at that moment they sprung their trap.

Matt shot up a flare from where he in in the shadows. The sound caused the outlaws to turn their backs on the beach, and the bright light momentarily drew their attention skyward. It also served to alert Oodles and Noodles. In one huge gastropodian surge they rose up out of the waves, water pouring from their backs as they came, and before anyone else could even twitch, Noodles opened with scald. The outlaws were caught completely off guard! Noodles' attack caught both the Skiddo and the Pokemon to its right, knocking them flat on their faces. As they fought to regain their feet, their companion turned to face Noodles, only to run smack into Festus, who shouted "Surprise, dirtball!" before letting loose with an attack of his own. Meanwhile, seeing an opportunity,  Lorn stepped out from behind the rock he'd been using as cover and silently closed the distance between himself and the fallen outlaws. They were soaking wet - when the Powder Snow hit them, it hit HARD. One went down immediately, teeth chattering. The Skiddo however, frost clinging to its wooly fur, managed to regain his feet. Lorn hesitated. He'd never been in a true battle before, so lacked the instincts of his fellows. Should he try the snow again? Something else...?
"Lookout!"
The Skiddo had lowered his head and begun a charge. Lorn may not have been battle-hardened, but his reflexes were plenty sharp from a life of dancing. Maybe even sharper than most! He dodged out of the way with room to spare. The outlaw, on the other hand, was unable to stop or change direction quickly due to his momentum, so he went past in a spray of sand, crashing headlong into one of the many large rocks that littered the beach. As the Pokemon fell to the sand - stunned - Lorn became aware that the battle noises behind him had stopped. Matt and Festus had wrangled the outlaw that hadn't fallen to Noodle's first attack. As the Froslass turned about, he saw Oodles putting the finishing touches on the knot that would bind an outlaw's limbs together. Matt seemed pleased with the Shellos's work and knoded sagely at the yonger Pokemon whilest muttering something Lorn couldn't hear from where he stood. Whatever it was though, it made Oodles smile.

The mission was over, te outlaws were in custody. Now all they had to do was throw away the key. And Lorn was MORE than ready to do that! If he never fought another battle inhis life, he'd be only too pleased.

Oodles was fighting valiantly to contain their laughter, but failing all the same. Their entire body shook with soundless mirth! Finally, they just couldn't help it anymore and let loose a loud whoop that caused their mother to cringe visibly. "Oodles, it's not nice to laugh at someone else's misfortune...."
"I...mmfh.... I know, mom, It's just... I just...!" Tears began to stream down their face as they dissolved into another gale of helpless laughter. After a minute or so baking underneath Noodles' withering stare, they were able to sober up enough to stop laughing, though a huge grin still played on their face and their eyes glittered mischievously. "'Comeon, mom. A cat up a tree? How stereotypical can you get?"
"Stereotypical or no, Delcatty really IS stuck up a REAL tree - and she can't get down."
"But why'd she go up there in the first place?"
Noodles closed her eyes for second and sighed. When she reopened them, she looked straight at Oodles and said, with all perfect seriousness: "She was being chased by a Lillipup."
Oodles was perfectly silent. Their eyes were saucers. Then, as their mother had predicted, they began giggling madly once again.
It was at this point Noodles gave up. She rolled all three of her eyes in prefect unison then turned to go. "Just wait here. If you can't be serious, you'll not be coming along to help. When Oodles didn't respond, being caught too deep in their own personal joke, Noodles just went off in a huff by herself. She didn't even bother asking Lorn to help - the Froslass was still in a huff about being asked to help with an arrest back in Swerve City, and wasn't likely to even bother sticking his head out of his tent.

She was on her own for this one.

It was a simple matter to find the tree, seeing as it wasn't far out of town and there was a knot of young Pokemon gathered around its base. They were all staring up into the branches, but as Noodles' approach, they shifted their attention to her. A small Chingling cried: "Miss clown! Miss Cclown! You came!"
"Of course I did! I saw you all at our show yesterday evening! You were such a good audience that when your friend came to me asking for help, I HAD to see what I could do! Speaking of which, where is your friend?" Noodles scanned the assembled children for the Lillipup she'd spoken to earlier.
"Joey went home - he's awful sorry! He didn't know Katie would go an climb the tree. He was just kidding around!"
"Why'd he go home then?"
"He was worried that if he hung around, she wouldn't want to come down." This was from a Budew.
"You won't tell our parents, will you Miss clown? They'll be real mad!" This was the Chingling again.
"We'll see - first though, we need to get Kitty down." Now it was HER turn to peer up into the branches.

After securing a length of rope, getting Katie down was quite easy. Noodles simply tossed it up the Delcatty, had her tie it around her waist, then instructed her on the best way to slip off the opposite side of the branch so that Noodles (and several of the other kids, who were eager to help) could let out the rope little by little, thus lowering her gently to the ground.

"There now! That was easy, wasn't it?"

Since the Hodgepodge gang travels from town to town, outpost to outpost, it is not uncommon for them to pick up passengers along the way - Pokemon who, for one reason or another, don't quite feel UP to going it alone. Other times, they get asked to deliver Items. Letters, packages, presents. It's all the same to them! As long as the object isn't to big or too valuable (it won't do to attract unwanted attention!), they'll pop it in the wagon and carry it along to the next place down the road. The recipient will have to prove their identity, of course - either by identifying the contents of a package, or the name of the sender, or the reason for the gift - but that's just a formality. All in all, it's no skin of The Gang's collective nose. Which is why, when a Parasect scuttled up to Noodles bearing a package for his brother who lived in the next town over, she simply smiled and agreed to the task. All she requested was that the item be well packed, to prevent it from getting damaged on the road. He readily agreed. So it was all set. As the Pokemon disappeared around a bend in the street, Noodles hoped fervently that her smile hadn't seemed false.

Parasects creeped her the heck out. Paras she could deal with, but ParaSECT... she shuddered inwardly. Something about those eyes... and the mushroom... they were perfectly normal Pokemon when you got right down to it, and she'd never had reason to dislike one personally, but still... Noodles shook her head. The whole thing was silly. It didn't bear thinking about!

Two days later they set out, the Parasect's package safely nestled in the wagon. Three days after that, it came to rest in the eager claws of said Parasect's brother, who apparently needed the thing so he wouldn't keep falling asleep at inopportune moments due to his narcolepsy. Noodles wished him luck with it, then went off to help Oodles and Lorn set up the act.

A Shinx battled with his black sunglasses as he walked through the market. It was a busy day with various pokemon walking around. All of them were either max evolutioned or equally overpowered. The Shinx honestly didn't fit in.

"Why do we always find ourselves taking the oddest missions," the Shinx huffed under his breath. He was Alpha, the leader of the two-member guild, Guild Omikron. And he really, really needed to evolve.

His guild member, Beta, wrested with an expensive scarf. "Just keep walking," the Rockruff muttered back. "If anyone asks, we're Valiant's charges."

Alpha rolled his eyes. "I know."

Their newest mission had led the pokemon on another arrest attempt. This time, they needed to capture a Beartic known as Risk. The only problem was that neither of them stood a chance in battle against the ice-type. They were also in a secret market run solely by "evil" pokemon. The guild members' cover was that they were the charges of Valiant - their client and a very strong Braviary who had been scouting the illegal market for quite some time.

As they walked through the area, Alpha caught sight of a large stall run by a white pokemon on two legs. "There," he hissed to Beta. "I think that's him."

Beta took one glance at the stall and nodded. Risk seemed to be selling stones. Not normal stones, but stones pulsing with energy. "They're mega stones," he muttered. It was illegal to sell said stones without proper permission, which Risk didn't have. The rule had been put in place after an evil organization used hundreds of mega pokemon to take on an entire army.

Paws padded towards the stand as Beta began putting their plan into action. "Excuse me, Mr. Beartic?" he called up at Risk. Meanwhile, Alpha slipped away behind the stand and shot a very faint bolt of lightning up into the air.

With Beta busy with Risk, Alpha had signaled for Valiant to come with his group of sky police. The Shinx then ran back to Beta who was hagging for a mega stone "for his friend."

Alpha dipped his head towards Risk, then asked snottily, "Which one ya getting?"

Beta gave the Shinx a withering glare and growled, "The Salamence one."

Risk crossed his arms. "As I was saying," the Beartic grumbled, "You will pay at least-"

Suddenly, the flapping of wings filled the air and Valiant dropped to the ground. "Hello Risk," he greeted as if they weren't trying to arrest the large pokemon. "I hope my charges haven't been bothering you too much?"

The Braviary made a shooing motion with his wings; Alpha and Beta walking away from the stall, mischievous smirks decorating their muzzles.

Five seconds later, there was an enraged cry from Risk's stall and the sounds of one-sided battle echoed through the bazaar.

Later at the mission board, Valiant smiled down at Alpha and Beta. "Next time I need Guild Members willing to act like little kids, I'll sure know who to call."

Beta laughed at Alpha's expression. "And I'll make sure our guild leader picks up the phone!"

"Why would you need an escort to meet with Tentacool?" a Shinx asked a Treeko as they walked through the cave.

The grass-type shrugged. "He lives in Stream Cave. It's dangerous. No one's allowed in without a guide."

"And I'm qualified as a guide even though I've never been here before?" the Shinx asked.

"Well, you're here now," the Treeko decided. "And guild members are used to being in threatening situations."

Alpha hummed in acceptance. While the logic of it was odd, it also made sense in a way. "You've been here before, right?" he asked Treeko.

Treeko nodded. "Twice. Each time with different guides."

A faint smile traced Alpha's muzzle. "And this is only my second time in a cave," he muttered to himself. "Then you're more qualified than me."

They reached a small pool in the cave that connected to a larger river.

"Well, here we are," Alpha announced.

Treeko nodded his thanks and went over to the pool. "Tentacool," he said, rapping on the rocky floor as if it was a door, "We're here."

A squid-like head appeared out of the water. "Hello," Tentacool said.

Before the two friends to get too deep in conversation, Alpha cleared his throat. "Um... do I have to wait here?" he asked.

Treeko looked at him. "Yes."

"How long will this take?"

"An hour at least."

The Shinx groaned in dismay. "And there goes my free time before the meeting."
