Writing/Art: Jo was often referred to as the “town mayor” of Badger Buddies Ranch. She was always very keen on the horses coming and going from the property, and would often call out to any new or visiting horses. If she saw trailers passing her field, she would often trot alongside them from within the fence, and then stand at the end of the fence line to get a good view of whoever would be unloaded. Any of the farm’s newer residents who needed a friend to be turned out with, Jo was a reliable pick to pair them with. She didn’t have a mean bone in her body, so there was no worry about any fights breaking out. Plus, she was energetic and playful, so she would often tire out the newest additions to the farm with her antics and games, helping them to relax and feel much calmer in their new surroundings.

It was a no brainer to bring Jo alongside some of the other horses to the Töfratré Event, as there was no worry over her adjusting or getting along with the many other horses being trailered in. This would be the first event she would be brought to since her racing career had ended, so everyone was very excited for her. This would be very different and much quieter than her days spent racing, and it was hoped that she would have a fun and relaxing time.

There were many other Euphorian Thoroughbreds brought to the wonderful event, but there were many horses of a very different breed. They were called Tolters, and had a funny but cute little gait that was unique to them. They all seemed very personable and happy. Jo had taken quite an interest in them, which was not surprising, but she was certainly more interested in these new horses rather than the other Euphorian Thoroughbreds.

One interesting looking Tolter was being led past Jo and the other Badger Buddies Ranch horses. He had a shiny tag on his halter that read “Artagon”. While the other horses continued to walk forward, Jo planted her feet, refusing to move past this stranger without saying hello. The two sniffed noses, and Jo softly nickered to Artagon before nudging him with her nose. It was clear that she was ready to play with her new friend, but he seemed less interested. He continued to be walked past the blue mare, which disappointed her. She planted her feet in protest. Her head hung low and her ears drooped down, looking slightly depressed. She eventually gave in and moved forward again to catch up with the rest of her herd.

She looked back at Artagon and gave a booming whinny, but unfortunately did not get a response back from the Tolter. It looked like Jo would need to look elsewhere during the event to find a new friend. Thankfully for her, there were plenty of other Tolters and Euphorian Thoroughbreds around the stables for her to meet and befriend.

When Carnation fort met Prize, she was but a mere filly. A little one that barely knew how to use her flimsy legs. She was barely a week old but Prize had already left her awe-struck. That morning, she had woken up and nurses from her mother before they were led out into the pasture.
The morning dew on the grass was always such a beautiful sight. They were like glistening pearls under the morning sun. The cool wind blew and the smell of dew filled Carnation’s nose. It was yet another beautiful day. She spent the first hour prancing about and playing around with the adults since there weren’t any other goals with her at that time. Just then, a mysterious stallion stepped out of the stables and was led into the neighbouring pasture. Who was he? Why was he staying at their stable? She was so intrigued by the stallion. He looked so warm and welcoming. His brown body was sleek and built, the ideal body of a horse. He quietly grazed at the pasture. Carnation noticed a few mates in the far corner looking and giggling at him. He really was a charmer of sort.
She wondered closer to the pasture where the fence was. She peered at him. He noticed a pair of eyes on him and turned around to be greeted by a little filly. He smiled as he quietly approached and sniffed her. Carnation immediately got excited and squeezed through the fence. He was mildly stunned by the intrusion but welcomed it regardless. He introduced himself as Prize and Carnation happily introduced herself.
“You should be with your mother.” Prize said.
“She’s there. She knows I’m here and that I’ll be fine.”
They looked up and saw Lyra grazing. Her deep blue eyes glancing at them every so often.
“Do you know her, mister?” The little filly asked.
“Yeah. I knew her. She was a monster. I’ve met her on the track a few times but those few times were enough to give me a run for my money, quite literally.”
The filly tilted her head, confused.
“We are jockey horses. We race for a living. We have raced against each other before and I always lose to her.” Prize said.
    “Why’s that?”
“Well kid, I’m not sure myself. If you can get your mom to share her secret on running fast, let me know.” Prize laughed.
They continued to chat a bit more before Prize was led off.
“W-Where are you going?” The filly asked, trying to keep up.
“I’ve gotta get ready.” Was all the stallion could say.
Carnation presses her ears back, upset that she couldn’t continue talking to him. He was such an interesting horse with so much stories to share. She headed back to her mother.
“Prize had to go somewhere...” Carnation sighed.
“He has a race to get ready for.” Lyra answered.
“Did you really win him? Were his stories true?” The foal perked up.
Lyra sighed. They were definitely true. It wasn’t long after she was caught and broken that they found she had an innate talent for jockey. However, that was short-lived as she was also found to be pregnant from when she was a wild horse.
“Will you get back to racing, mama?”
    “I will.” Lyra laughed.
“Please do.” Prize said as he stepped out.
The stallion was groomed and was getting ready to board a trailer.
“I’ll see you on the track someday, Lyra. Hopefully I’ll see you soon as well, kid.” The stallion said as he loaded up.
The trailer drove off and that was that. Since then, Prize would make visits. They weren’t frequent but everytime he visited, he always had stories to tell. When Lyra eventually got back into jockey, she would bring Carnation along and she would get front row seats to her mother beating Prize in the derby.

Vodka was exited. He was in the back of the trailer on the way to a big show. He loved thrill of competing, flying over those jumps, trying to win. He was going to win today. No matter what. The stallion stuck his head out the window into the cold crisp morning air, getting lost in his thoughts. He got jolted to reality when the trailer came to a stop. Vodka was unload and his rider got to work setting up his stall. He looked to his right to see who was in the stall next to him. It took him a moment to notice the short wheat chestnut mare. "Hello little lady. I'm Vodka, whats your name?" he asked. The mare looked at him, a little startled. "Oh uh, I'm Maisey. Nice to meet you!" she lift her head to look at him.

The two started talking to pass the time and Vodka was relieved that they would not be competing against each other. They started learning more about each other. Maisey learned that Vodka was a retired racehorse who now regularly competes in show jumping. Vodka learned that Maisey was an Icelandic horse and this was her first show. She was quite nervous and Vodka talked her through what would happen, trying to calm her down. Vodka liked the little mare, she was sweet and calm, and easy to get along with.

The two horses got taken out and the grooming began. Maisey needed her mane and tail braided but since Vodka had a hogged mane, he only needed his tail braided. Vodka's eyes drooped, he was enjoying the feeling of the curry comb rubbing in circles on his withers. He sucked in his breath when the girth was tightened and champed on the bit when the cold metal slid into his mouth. He shifted closer to Maisey, "We're going to head over to the arena in a minute and then your going to be up soon," he said calmly. She nodded and they took off walking down to the arena.

Maisey swayed back and forth as she watched the other horses go around the short course. "Vodka, I'm nervous. What if i screw up?" her voice shook. "You'll be fine. Its your first show, just have fun out there! Oh, you're up, good luck!" he nudged her forward. Maisey broke into a trot as she entered the arena. She cleared the first jump and landed in a canter clearing the next three jumps. Only one jump remained, she focused on it but got a little nervous taking off a little late and knocking the top rail down. She sighed and trotted back to Vodka. "Hey it's okay, you did great!," he cheered. She smiled and looked at him, "Thanks! I uh, have to go but I wish you luck! I'll see you back in the stables when you're done," she walked back to the stables with her rider. Vodka thanked her and started warming up for his turn.

The breeze wafted in through the rodeo grounds, blowing any of the autumn leaves that dared to be in its path. As well as the occasional hat off of people's heads. It was that time of year again, where people started wearing heavier clothes and the horses were even working on their winter coats. So, today would be the last rodeo for the year. Not too many competitors had signed up with the bitter cold weather, and most of them were newbies on the recurit. That included one miss Elle. However, she was more known for the pole bending competitions and not cutting. She wouldn't like to say it, but her knees were a bit wobbly with nerves whenever she started thinking about those cows. Espeically, when riding her new yearling, Anubis, who has not had the greatest track record yet at conpetiting. But alas, her determination and stubbornness stopped her from stepping out of the line for the registration booth. Instead, she took a step forward as the person in front of her did. One less person in the line up and she was one step closer to those sign up sheets.

    ¤▪︎¤▪︎¤▪︎¤▪︎¤▪︎¤

Depsite the low numbers in competitors, there was a surplus of people attending to the rodeo to watch. Usually, there isnt that many people showing up during the fall, so it left the event coordinators scrambling to accommodate everyone. They had also called in to have some security from the law enforcement, just to insure everyone stays safe and respectful.

At frist, Elena thought it be so exciting to be able to go see a rodeo in person. She had heard about them, but her job always prevented her from be able to. However, once they got there, she quickly found it immensely boring. The competitions were undoubtly interesting, but she barely got to see them! Elena got posted with her partner out by all the concessions, and all the people were quite civil. Which was good, but it also meant zero action. A few small children gad wondered off from their families to pet my nose and that was it. After about an hour or so, the mare couldnt hell herself any longer. She started to swing her head around and nibble at her partner's shoes, or trying to catch the occasional leaf blowing by. Whenever she did catch one, she tried to eat it. It was flakey and no taste to it, and in short elena found it disgusting. But what else was she to do?

Little time passes before Elena's partner takes pity on her and dismounts.

"How about we take a quick break for some food? I know that I'm pretty famished myself." Her partner suggested while he gathered the reins and lead the mare over to a snack table.

All Elena could think was, 'from what? I don't see you standing still, hours on end carrying over 200 pounds.' She just rolled her eyes while she politely complied to him leading her.

The mare stood with her head low to the ground in a relaxed state at the snack table when a set of four white legs intercepted her vision. Her partner was too busy trading his money for some snacks to notice the stray set of legs as well. So, elena took the initiative by jerking her head up just in time to see the body attached to the legs. At first glance, he was pretty attractive, but he was also much taller than her, and where was his owner? Then, with horrified eyes, she watched the stallion take a slice of pumkpin pie off of the snack table. Elena shrieked at the strange, gangley legged, stallion to stop. It shocked him into dropping the slice onto the floor, and everyone in the surrounding area to look at them. Her partner included, looked to elena and then to the loose horse.

He calmly grabbed a spare rope from the standard issued saddlebag before looping it around the stallion's neck. He gave the horse a few good pets to show he was a friend, and then tied the loose end of the rope onto to Elena's saddle. With that done, the partner quickly finished paying and collecting his snacks, before mounting back on Elena. From there they all rode out onto the rodeo grounds in search of the stallions owner.

    ¤▪︎¤▪︎¤▪︎¤▪︎¤▪︎¤

"You know, you shouldn't steal and runaway from your human. They're probably worried sick, and now have to pay for pie slice." Elena stated, trying to educate the stallion.

"I thought the police were supposed to ask for your name first?" The stallion retorted with a smart attitude.

"Okay then, what is your name?"

"Anubis, at your service ma'am." The stallion stated with a sloght bow to his head.

"Wow okay, please don't call me that. My name's Elena."

Anubis snickered from the mares immediate response, and Elena gave him a glare. He quickly looked away to avoid her gaze after catching part of the glare.

    'Rude stallions.'

    'Mares.'

Elena was the first to break the period of silence. "So I got to ask, Anubis, what were you doing stealing a slice of pie?"

"It wasn't just any pie, it was pumkpin pie. The best seasonal treat around there is. I couldn't not get a piece of it." Anubis said with emphasis on pumpkin. Although Elena made a grossed our face with the stallion's obvious love of pumkpins.

"What, does the lady have something against pumkpins?"

Elena gave Anubis a look as soon as those words left his mouth. "No, I personally prefer local apples compared to pumpkins."

"Well you're missing out." Anubis stated before looking away once more, and beginning to wonder where Elle might be.

    ¤▪︎¤▪︎¤▪︎¤▪︎¤▪︎¤

Elena's partner brought both horses to a halt as a young woman came running forth. She was slightly out of breath and it had taken her a few seconds to catch herself. "Officer, hi, I'm sorry. My names Elle, I own the horse you have there. He hasnt caused any issues has he?"

The partner was pleasantly surprised before dismounting from Elena, just so that he wasnt too intimidating. "I just caught him trying to take a pumkpin pie from a concession stand. But other than that, hes been good." He said softly as he made quick work to untie the stallion.

Anubis had a mischievous look in his eyes, like he was about to bolt. Fortunately for the concessions, Elle managed to quickly slip his halter on and attach the lead rope. "Thank you, and sorry, again. I'll try to keep a better eye out on him."

"No worries miss, enjoy the rest of the rodeo." The offcier stated with a tip of his hat, and just like that, he was back on Elena. He took her back to their post, while Elle lead Anubis off to tack up for their competition.

The Töfratré Event was the perfect opportunity to meet other horse owners of several different breeds. I only felt it necessary that I joined in the festivities as well, bringing a fan favorite of the stables with me: Yuuri. Yuuri has always been a likable stallion, winning the hearts of the handlers and even the mares and stallions he shares the pastures with. He is a perfect Therapy horse, bringing joy to his patients whenever he sees them and genuinely seeming to enjoy their presence as well. He was perfect to travel with, and I hopped his patience and overall charm would win the approval of those he met at the event.

The drive was fairly easy until we had gotten closer to the event, the traffic only moving by a few inches every fifteen or so minutes. It was annoying, police officers directing traffic down other roads in hopes to clear up traffic in any way they could. It was difficult seeing over the trailers blocking me in, and I did my best to make sure I kept my composure for Yuuri's sake. After about an hour and a half, traffic had finally cleared during that time and police escorts split up traffic and directed us to the trailer parking. With a sigh of relief, I took my parking spot and turned off the ignition, hopping out of the driver's seat and heading to the tailgate to grab some buckets and tools so I could start setting up Yuuri's stall. A few interns came by, offering their help, and with the three of us, I was able to sign in and get Yuuri's stall prepared. I waved a thank you to the two of them and returned to retrieve Yuuri, leading him gently out of the trailer and to his stall. He was curious, sniffing around and pawing at the bedding until he nestled in and dozed off.

That next morning, I had met a few owners of Bear Run Tolters, another popular species that was making its rounds among horse lovers. There would be a small meet and greet between owners and I decided I would take Yuuri along in hopes he would make some new friends. I cleaned him up, gave him a few scratches and lead him out into a large pasture, where there were already a few owners standing in a circle with their horses, who seemed to be quite curious about one another. I was let into the pasture, Yuuri trailing closely beside me, and the other horse owners turned to greet me. As I spoke with them about my stables and heard their own stories about their farms and horses, a Tolter by the name of Artagon was curiously sniffing at Yuuri's neck, my sweet boy letting him do as he pleased and returning the favor when the Tolter allowed him. The two exchanged small whinnies and snorts, speaking in their own adorable language and I couldn't help but feel relieved watching them get along as well as they did. Maybe one day they would be able to meet again, and get to know each other even more.

Writing/Art:
It was a sunny day when the perlino tobiano mare, Diamond, was grazing in the pasture. The mare was as cheerful as she ever was when she was alone; in simpler terms, she was as cheerful as the sun on an overcast day. She was perched upon a hill in the pasture, as far as she could that still had a view of the stables, that way she knew if someone was coming and so that she could prepare herself for mingling. Not to say that Diamond was an unfriendly mare, she just found encounters with others, taxing and putting on a facade jaded her in the worst way. Thus she usually needed to prepare for any communications, though today she felt unusually cheery. Her white tail swishing back and forth and her back turned toward the stable blocks below. All the other Euphorian mares were gone, and Dia was blissfully alone. She had even done a couple cheerful laps around the extensive pasture and threw up her heels in excitement, she honestly never felt anything like being alone.

Currently she joyfully munched on the long green grass. That was until she heard a low snort, and to that she nearly jumped out of her skin. A low hearty laugh filled her ears, and she whipped herself around. In front of her stood a buff Tolter stallion with a roached mane, who's laugh rang in her ears. "Ex-cuse me, you're not supposed to be here!" Diamond whinnied annoyed at his presence and unending giggles. "This is the Euphorian mare pasture, which you are neither." She stamped her hoof forcefully and hoped he would just leave, though she knew that was unlikely. The grullo splash stallion stopped laughing and regained his composure, "Sorry miss, but I saw you from our pasture and you looked like you could use a companion." To this Diamond flattened her ears to her head, how dare he assume what she did or didn't need; and he was so very far off the mark. "I don't mean to say that you need company," the stallion said smoothly, "Rather that you want to be alone and I want to be alone, so perhaps we be alone together?" Diamond stood silent, and she felt her blood pressure lower; as the Tolter did make sense for some nonsensical reason. "Fine, just don't talk," she answered through gritted teeth. To that the splashed Tolter nodded and put his head down to graze, and the Euphorian mare did the same.

After a couple of hours, Diamond felt her previous cheer return; even though the stallion was still present. She picked up her head and looked at him for a moment, pondering as to why she felt comfortable with a complete stranger. Perhaps it was because he wasn't a Euphorian and didn't remind her of the awful racing days; or perhaps because he seemed to understand the importance of silence. Regardless, she shook her mane and continued to graze; though she wandered ever closer to him. He was a full hand shorter than her but he was very muscular and his tail was long; and she found herself watching him more than actually eating. If he noticed her gaze he didn't show it, since his white nose continued along the grass and his eyes lowered. Diamond flicked her tail and lowered her eyes, relishing in the fact that she felt comfortable with the Tolter stallion; something she rarely felt with any Euphorian.
