[Thank the wisp.]

[The wisp waves a little more rapidly for a moment once you thank it, and it gives you the odd sensation that unlike the monster beneath you, the wisp actually understands your words. In fact, it settles in around your shoulders rather than attempting to fly off as a freed animal might. Either it seems to trust you for the moment or it is smart enough to see that holding on to you is safer than flying when the monster could go back to sucking it in at any moment. Either way, it's probably a better ally than the beast. That being said, though, you still need to do something about it.]

Mae grinned sheepishly up at the elder Goon, feeling a bit guilty for disturbing his work. "I'll do my best." She promised with a slight laugh, knowing full and well she probably had too many questions to make anything "quick". "What's up with the guards?" She asked after a moment. "And the gate? I was fine out there until," she lifted the arm that was in a cast pointedly. "They look really cool, though! Am I allowed to be a guard?"

[Why do we have a guard, and how do you become one?]

["Feh!" Tiber snorts, as if this is exactly the kind of question he expected and didn't want to have to answer. Despite his apparent distaste for it, he answers quite thoroughly. Whether because he actually wants to help or because he takes his job so seriously he can't help but do it well, you don't know. "The guards watch the gate to ward off approaching dangers, and protect this place from outside threats. We're quite small, and there are many larger animals that would love to gobble up any stray creatures they found without a safe place to hide. The guards are all trained up and experienced enough to survive those kinds of encounters, or at least to lead away anything that might harm their home. If you can measure up to those kinds of tasks, they'll let you join right away just by talking to the guild master, but in any other case you'll have to work hard before you earn that kind of position. If you'd like to try, there are plenty of ways to improve yourself. You can exercise your abilities while you are out and about in the wild, look for items in the market which can build up your strengths, or even make regular trips to the training yard, where you can practice alone or with a partner if you can find one. Put in enough time and effort there and it's sure to amount to something good. Was there anything else?"]

It’s a shame to waste all this effort, but Eden didn’t want to chance any cocoons hatching while he was carrying them, or get the sap stuck in his coat. He had come to pick berries anyway, but had gotten side tracked and now it was time to climb down. Carefully, he started his descent, the rough bark tickling at his paw pads.

[After all that work, you are disappointed to find that there were no hidden treasures you could take with you from the trees. By time you get your feet back on solid ground it's getting pretty late. You don't have time to go very far if you want to get back inside the gates safely, so you only manage to find a few handfuls of berries growing where others overlooked them before it's time to head back. You may not have found any precious treasure or a bountiful harvest, but at least you made it back without getting hurt, and learned a valuable lesson during your adventure about climbing trees: it just doesn't seem to be worth your time.]

A Merchant Adventure

[The fall is coming to an end and the winter is hard on its heels. Treks into the wilderness will become more dangerous soon, and the merchant's guild acknowledges it has put off for too long the planned trip to explore a certain hidden destination which they believe to hold secrets that may bring great wealth. The success of any venture is bound up in the numbers of those who are able to competently explore and safely return with their discoveries, and the goons had been holding out and hoping for a human adventurer to join their crew before taking on the new danger, but as that seems unlikely to come before the long winter and there are merchants who will not survive the cold season without the sales which will bring in their meals, the venture's date has finally been set. All banded merchants are welcomed to join the caravan making the three day trip out into the wilderness to a half-buried relic believed to hide the entrance to a much larger location beneath filled with unique and probably valuable items. Guild fees will cover the cost of guards for the caravan, so the only danger in joining will be leaving the group to seek more valuable lost treasures on one's own. The sign-in sheets lay both upon the caravan's side at the gate side and at the guild post board, with a few messily scrawled names awaiting more to come before the date of the expedition arrives.]

Her eyes lit up as the older Goon explained the guard to her; that sounded exactly like something she'd be good at! Maybe she would find a place here yet! As soon as he stopped talking, Mae was practically bursting with questions. "Should I talk to the guild master to let him know I'm interested? And where is he? And the training hall? And-" Remembering the Goon's prior request for few questions, Mae cut her exuberance short. "And, uh... that's it. Sorry." She chuckled sheepishly.

[Tiber resembles every inch the unimpressed teacher as the list of questions multiplies, and his eyes narrow at the lack of subtlety with which you bring them to a halt, but stifling a long-suffering sigh, he once again does his best to comply with the duty expected of him. "Very well. If you are interested in joining the guard, you could ask the guild master if you may join, and you will be tested. However, it may benefit you to save yourself time and effort by first asking one of the guard if they think you suitable for the position. If you fall far below their standards, they will be able to tell you without so much fuss. Additionally, if you have no experience in the area, I would assume the latter is the case."

At this point, the old goon looks meaningfully at your injury and then meets your eyes with a hard stare, and just as you are about to break the silence out of discomfort and uncertainty, he continues. Funny, for someone so quick to judge you for your bluntness, he isn't exactly showing much tact either. "If you insist on bothering the guild master, you may of course very likely find him in the guild hall. That's directly north as far as you can go from the gate, mind you, and the training yard is just West of the barracks, which are in turn just West of the gate. That being said, you shouldn't have to go far looking for a partner or tips if you decide to get some practice in."]

I take my first steps with care, checking the map regularly to be sure I haven't gotten lost. There are locations marked with interesting landmarks to choose from. I think I'll start with the...

Silver is a bit shy, and because of this he tended to wander off. This time though, he found himself in a strange, dry place.

[Your new mom is surprisingly patient as you munch away at your meal, and once you've finished she returns with more. When one child is finished eating, she serves the next peeper, making sure each gets a turn filling its mouth and belly. It seems there are only two others in the nest, though each is already about the same size as you, and they tend to gobble down most of their meals in one or two bites. The others seem to be settling down a bit, though, and meal time may soon be over. Come to think of it, the time is getting pretty late and you might want to start heading home if you plan to get back before the gates close!]
