Pine had not thought he would make it this far, especially after the odd encounter with... well, with
whatever noise that was late last night. The poor man had spent the rest of his night curled up fearfully in front of the door with an old baseball bat, praying that he wouldn't need to fight anything off. After all, while his fear was strong, his mother hen sense was even stronger, and Pine had forced himself to action in order to protect his cabinmates in case anything evil had tried to fight it's way inside. The consequence of that, however, was that all day, from breakfast to now, there had been a slight quiver in the large Kalon's voice, as well as a tremor in his paws. He had not been excited to do this trek, and the odd situation from the night prior had left him even more shaken than before. Had it been the counselors trying to spook them early? Was it just some odd raccoon or possum out and about looking for some leftover snacks? Or, and this was the worst thought of all, was it something dark and haunting from the forest? Pine had read lots of stories on haunted forests, and he was sure that if any were even remotely ghostly, this one was it. This made Pine think, what was worse? Ghouls and goblins, or bears and snakes? Which was more likely? At this point in time, and with this location, Pine was beginning to blur fantasy and reality. Anything was possible out here, in these woods, tonight. Shrugging his backpack up higher on his shoulder and thus closer to him for comfort, he attempted to clear his mind of horrors and instead ran back over his mental checklist of supplies,
"
Water? Check. Snacks?," not that he would be needing any - his stomach was rolling worse than the waves in the sea, and even thinking made him nauseous, "
Check... Extra sweater in case someone forgot one and gets chilly? Double check." Pausing, he finished his list and now made sure to locate his most important item for this hike, pulling it out of his sweater pocket and holding it close to his heart. The item in question was a little Polaroid picture of himself and his mate, Tyler Jo, taken during one of their dates. It was a happy picture of the two of them snuggled up among the twisted roots of a tree, surrounded by little blinking fireflies while Pine began to doze off and Tyler Jo gave a gentle smile to the camera, and ever since it had been taken, Pine insisted on keeping it with him for whenever he needed an extra boost of encouragement or a reminder he was loved. Even the thought of Tyler Jo himself was enough to fuel Pine onwards - his mate had been so proud of him for wanting to branch out from their family home for a few days and go to camp, and had even encouraged Pine to go for it and to have fun despite being nervous. Tyler Jo was already so proud of Pine for facing the fear of going off by himself and having to become accustomed to a new surrounding, so how extra proud his mate would be to hear Pine had gone on a test of courage and had - hopefully - passed! Pine had already written so much about the spooky night hike to Tyler Jo, and even the thought of sending such a report of bravery and fear-facing calmed Pine's current anxiety, even if just a little bit. He was eager to make himself and his mate proud, and while he was scared out of his mind, he was confident he would be coming out of this a braver Kalon!
Hurrying to join the others, Pine located a larger group that had already gathered and softly introduced himself. He already knew some of these Kalons from participating in different activities with them, and he was happy to hear that everyone around him seemed just as nervous as he did. After all, it always felt better when you knew you weren't alone in your feelings, and it showed Pine wasn't too worse off! Giving another glance around, Pine was also glad to see the small, wiry kit was still among the group. When he heard about campers sneaking around and being disqualified from the hike, he had been worried that the excitable kit may have been one of the ones out and about - luckily, it seemed she had either been obedient to the rules of staying inside during the night, or had been too quick and sly to be caught, but either way she was here in case any sort of bear or puma tried to attack the group. Even a silly thought like this began to lighten Pine's mood, and he began to shift his focus onto the pleasant things surrounding him. There were plenty of fireflies all around, and off in the distance the gentle singing of frogs could be heard. If Pine closed his eyes and didn't even look at the forest, this entire atmosphere was, in actuality, incredibly charming. Giving a content, relaxed sigh, Pine allowed his eyes to open again before gazing again upon the forest. This time, he felt ready, and this time, he would not let the forest intimidate him so easily! With a swish of his tail, he stepped forward, and prepared himself for the hike ahead.
