There are several warriors sub-ranks, which are considered 'basic'. These are vigilants, hunters, fishers, collectors, and guards. You can be assigned more than one sub-rank either at 8 months or later in life, but are trained by whatever mentors are in your assigned field. Their roles are further explained on the ranking info page.​

There are several other possible elections. One, a cat can be a medicine cat apprentice instead. These are typically chosen after three months of warriors training by the medicine cat, but rarely some are chosen at birth or at the initial ceremony. ​

Two, the cat could be chosen as successor. Successors are reserved for relatives of the leader only. They are generally chosen either later in life or at birth, but sometimes it is thought best to train them up to be leader after three moons of regular training!​

Three, a cat can be chosen as the conductor's apprentice. There's no strict rules for this, other than the fact they'll basically train as a warrior and be assigned a time to follow the conductor around, learn, and run errands for their mentor.​

Fourthly and lastly, the cat could also be a tale weaver's apprentice. The tale weaver generally accepts more than one apprentice based on interest and holds short lessons in the midst of the more important hunting, fighting, herb and music lessons. He'll then choose when successor out of these. In some cases, even warriors can attend and become the successor, not an apprentice! It all depends on what the current weaver wants.
