Iɴғᴏʀᴍᴀᴛɪᴏɴ Tʜʀᴇᴀᴅ

This is a small information thread to use to find out a much more in-depth explanation of
the subtypes of Pearl Gryffs, and the species as a whole. They will each have their own
separate post; the species, Flight Gryffs, Land Gryffs, and finally, Aquatic Gryffs. There
will be a featured Gryff for each of them. In addition, you can learn more about the
genes, behaviors, and other information of Pearl Gryffs. Enjoy!

main thread wrote:We introduce you to a newly-discovered species - Pearl Gryffs. They are a strange, varying
species that has growth triggered by something even stranger - regular water. Living for
about 15 to 20 years, this domestic species has three subtypes, Flight, Land and Aquatic.
These three subtypes all share the same species and DNA, but are incredibly different; this
is because they each develop for much longer periods of time. It's a long explanation, but
basically, the longer in water they stay, the more they grow. Flight Gryffs take the least
amount of time to fully develop, while Aquatic Gryffs take much longer. This difference
isn't genetic -- actually, it is just according to when the Gryff wants to leave the water.

Pearl Gryffs are named for their behavior. No matter their type, they have a strange habit.
When they mature, about 2 years into their lifespan, they will scour riverbottoms for a
rock, a beautiful stone that catches their eye. These are "pearls" in their eyes. They
protect these stones for the rest of their life and are incredibly protective over them.
Flight Gryffs will carry them with prehensile tails during flight, and Aquatics may even
wrap them in seaweed pouches or put them in necklaces to protect them and keep
them close.

Pearl Gryffs, or just Gryffs, are a species that vary incredibly in growth, mutations, size,
and coloration. They are an odd species that matures only in water. This strange growth
trigger leads to the three genetically identical subtypes; flight, land, and aquatic. Each
of them are light, winged creatures, but they each have very unique differences, and
some are much more common than others. However, they almost seem to be different
breeds altogether, as behaviors, temperaments, and everything in between change as they
mature at different times.

Pearl Gryffs are known for living about fifteen to twenty years and are quite hardy.

Gᴇɴᴇs

Genes, as far as base colors go, aren't very complicated. Each different unlinked
gene has three or four alleles, both dominant and recessive. In breeding, these genes
are actually used to create a realistic, random offspring. The alleles each gene uses
are listed below. Markings do not come into play with this way of generating offspring,
and are random based on whatever the artist would like. Colors of the markings will
be within reason, but can be anything the parents have.

Eyes: C and R (to determine base color), B (to determine brightness), and V (to
determine if the eyes are the same color).
Tongue & Skin: F and U (to determine base color), K (to determine brightness), and
L (to determine whether or not the skin is patchy or solid in color).
Beak & Claws: P and R (to determine base color) and Q (to determine brightness).
Pawpads: G and E (to determine base color), T (to determine brightness), and N (to
determine whether the skin is patchy or solid in color).
Inner Ears: A and C (to determine base color) and M (to determine brightness).
Pelt Base: D and O (to determine base color) and S (to determine brightness).
Wing Base: H and I (to determine base color) and W (to determine brightness).
Fins & Feathers: This gene is not seen on Flight Gryffs, but is obvious still present.
J and Z (to determine base color) and X (to determine brightness).

There are three different tiers of the base color genes for all of the above: a dominant,
heterozygous, and recessive tier. Each tier has three different genes. This makes breeding
with these type genes much more random.

You can use the table above, your Gryffs' genotypes, and this calculator to figure out
offspring possibilities for breeding. Some genotypes may just not seem compatible.

Stones are the things in which Pearl Gryffs get their names. A Gryff will choose a
stone when they become an adult to carry around for the rest of their lives, and they are
guarded heavily, moreso than mates or offspring. A Pearl Gryff without a stone is considered
a reject and outcast, and live the rest of their lives in solitude. They will never get another
stone as a replacement.

Stones come in a variety of different shapes, weights, and colors.

Weights:
Tiny ⇒ The rarest weight of a stone, as some Gryffs could be more prone to losing a Tiny
stone. These are more common with Flight Gryffs. These are usually only about one inch
in diameter and are never seen with Land Gryffs.
Small ⇒ The second-rarest weight of a stone. These are more common among Flight and
Aquatic Gryffs. These are usually about two or three inches in diameter.
Medium ⇒ The most common weight of a stone. These are more common among Aquatic
and Land Gryffs. These are usually about five inches in diameter.
Large ⇒ An uncommon weight of a stone. These are more common among Land Gryffs.
These are usually about seven inches in diameter and are never seen with Flight Gryffs.

Shapes:
Riverstones ⇒ Also known as Round stones, these are the most common stones seen
with Gryffs.
Cubic ⇒ These are uncommon stones seen with Gryffs.
Jagged ⇒ Also known as Shapeless stones, these are rare stones seen with Gryffs.
Porous ⇒ These are very rare stones seen with Gryffs, and can never be Large.
Custom Stones ⇒ There can be custom stones on some Gryffs, who have found a
very unique stone that matches them. These are incredibly rare.

Colors:
All colors can be found on all stones. This simply shows the most common.
Tans ⇒ A common color on Riverstones and Jagged stones.
Grayscale ⇒ A common color on Riverstones and Cubic stones.
Red, Green, Blue ⇒ Uncommon colors on Riverstones and Porous stones.
Mixed Colors ⇒ Uncommon colors on all stones.
Neon ⇒ Rare colors on Riverstones and Cubic stones.
