“It's that wonderful old-fashioned idea
that others come first
and you come second.
This was the whole ethic by which
I was brought up. Others matter
more than you do, so 'don't fuss,
dear; get on with it'.”

― Audrey Hepburn

No book should ever be judged by the cover; no plumerian should ever be judged by the first ten seconds you see of them before you even say hello. A plumerian with ragged clothes? Maybe they don't have the money to afford more, or maybe they are fun and high adventure? So many opportunities for good friends are passed up because first impressions. If somebody walked up and talked to plumerians like this, that person might find that the one they talked to is a valued friend. Loyalty may not be genetic, but hanging around that trait as Cally grew up with her parents, she sure learned it was a good trait to keep. She has a firm belief that others should come first, then herself. Not everyone is blessed with a good family, or a family at all. Whatever the dice rolled at the very first heartbeat was the status and situation you were stuck with. So others with a lucky roll should help those who tried, but couldn't escape what came their way. When Cally was born, her dice roll was near perfect.

Cally always felt bad because of her academics. While she passed tests easily without a need to study, others worked hard every night only to find a low "B" on every report card. Calypso continued her 4.7 grade point average all through high school for the sake of her parents and promise of college. However, she never quite knew the true reason for her work. She was positive if she became a B student, her parents wouldn't love her any less, and many mediocre colleges accept students with only a 3.5 grade point average. Her only rewards were numbers and praise, and she began to feel she was only being selfish. Others felt insecure about their grades because the average was set much higher because of Cally's spotless academic record. It wasn't until people around her kept suggesting to become a doctor did an idea spur to her. She could become a surgeon and save lives with the grades she had. It was if all the guilt and depressed feelings she had blew away with her one thought. All it took was eight years, eight years to become a hero.

Image

But there was only one problem . . . Finally she could make use of the double six pair of dice she rolled in this game of life, she could make a change and help out the less fortunate. People born with weak hearts or the hundreds of fatal heart diseases could be given another chance. However, there was still a problem; Calypso had an extreme phobia of blood. Even a small papercut can cause a small panic, and any time any videos are show at school with large amounts of blood she has to leave. Often Cally will faint at blood loss, especially if it is her own. Anyone watching her talk about her new dream job could see it wasn't truly meant to be her dream, but Cally didn't notice her plan's flawed design and pursued on, obsessed with the desire to help others. The thought never crossed her mind whether or not she could perform the job or enjoy the job, not to mention the inevitable tears she would shed over the ones she couldn't save. The only thing that mattered to her was the fact she found something to do with her otherwise meaningless grades.

Her parents encouraged her, saying to follow her dreams, as most parents should. They knew she would either figure out her dream dream or get over her fears. Though they worried, they knew Cally figuring out what to do by herself was the best idea. After two years of college, it occurred to Calypso she could no longer ponder her dream job as if were a theory. She had to accept that even though the idea of preforming surgery was ideal, she couldn't bring herself to actually preform the task. However, turning back two years of college would be expensive and a lot of time wasted studying information she could never put to good use. Immediately she turned to friends and family to find the answer. It took a while, but after perturbating over what she should do with the associates degree she already earned in medicine, she finally decided what path to take. Cancer biology.

Most enjoy working alone instead of groups because they trust themselves more than another, however this never proved true for Cally. She enjoyed having others make decisions for her, and she can be easily swayed by a well stated opinion. However she holds her theses close and defends those ideas strongly. Cally is found to be extremely generous, almost obsessively so. Most of the spare money she makes goes back into her research or for charity donations. Everything Calypso learns or spends her time doing has some intention of helping others, even her playing violin is to volunteer with a small orchestra to play at funerals. She has a huge heart that only gives and can be one of the most loyal plumerians. Her constant giving does allow others to take advantage of her however. Cally is easily swayed and can be gullible. If somebody simply asked her to do task and task and task, she would keep working, even if she was the one in that situation who needed the most help. Cally's obsessive nature comes out in more than just her desire to give, she also is considered a workaholic and perfectionist. There are days when Cally is on a roll with her work and won't sleep for 48 hours. Often times she will reread her theories for hours before she sleeps just to make sure she has the facts completely right. Her grades in college were outstanding after she figured out what she wanted to do, which was achieved by spending a lot of her time at the dorm studying. When friends of hers ask if she wants to join them for dinner that evening, she usually declines if she doing well at work. She doesn't try to avoid others, in fact quite the opposite, but Cally values her work over her social life. Cally has very little patience and becomes upset when she cannot achieve something instantaneously. Only her research is excluded at this pace, and even for that most of her movements are at a quick pace, as if there were a time limit on everything. She is fond of multitasking and tries to finish tasks as quickly as possible. The most saddening thing to Cally is death and oblivion. She refuses to believe there is nothing after death, for it would be too melancholy of a thought to believe a soul could vanish. She has no definite religion, but still hopes plumerians that have passed away good luck in the afterlife. Even after they are gone, she still wishes she could help.

"Some play at funerals for the dead,
others play to cheer up the living.
Either way you're welcome aboard
as long as it isn't for fame.
Calypso learned violin faster than most, this was mostly due to the fact that her friend, Nathaniel helped her along the way. He was the one who originally convinced Cally to play the beautiful, stringed instrument. Their tastes of music connected them and the two plumerians became friends by the way music powered their heartbeat. Very early in Cally's life, she became extremely saddened by death. Books that had numerous character deaths and textbook lectures about wars saddened her deeply. This was a sadness that couldn't be helped, because how could you help a plumerian who had already passed? This all changed when her violin-loving friend started playing at funerals. It was only with a small volunteer group, but the performances were amazing and it brought a new atmosphere to each of the fateful plumes they played for. Nothing can take away the sadness from a funeral, but for the ones where a musician or music-loving soul died, it seemed to bring more of the attendees a tad closer to accepting and hoping they have an okay life in the afterlife, new life, or wherever the friends or family believed the passed plume's soul would travel to.

Calypso wanted to join on this generous deed; she wanted to bring a tiny bit of peace to the passed and the mournful living. She begged Nate to teach her, which he accepted almost immediately. Most of the lessons Nate spent rolling his eyes and sipping coffee as Cally complained about not being able to play any of her favorite songs within the first week. Her impatient attitude amused him, for it encouraged her instead of repelled her from continuing to learn. She would practice every night for hours on end and wake up earlier to meet up with Nate at a coffee shop to continue talking about improving techniques. She was determined to join his little crew and make a difference in the hearts of people, no matter how small. After about two years, by the time she graduated from college, her hard work paid off. Calypso became able to keep up with the rest of the orchestra and volunteered to play with them. Each funeral was as sad as the last, but Cally kept moving her bow, in a desire to play and a desire to help.

A good relationship with Nate continues until this day for Calypso. Often times they will meet up at a coffee shop or get together to play violin in the spare time Cally has. His laid back nature makes it so he doesn't mind that she is busy all the time with work and other volunteer jobs.

"Hmm, your hypothesis
seems accurate, but did
you mean to write Oxygen?
Cally, you put Ozone again.
Erza tries to step up on Cally a lot and it annoys her because often he's right. Being a lawyer, he's worked in solving problems countless times and can rival Cally in intelligence. They met when Calypso worked in forensic science for a very short period of time to get enough experience to apply for a heart cancer research job. Exra dropped off DNA examples in the building she worked at in an effort to gather up more evidence on a case he was close to solving. He was sure after that final piece of evidence was turned in that the court would be convinced. As Ezra walked to Dr. Calypso Divincio's office and handed over his envelope, he couldn't help but notice a small mistake on a board within the room. There were multiple biological formulas on a chalkboard on the wall, seeming to be different from the current work of her's, but still a clear interest. "You put ozone instead of oxygen," he said while walking out. Cally jumped up immediately and ran over to her chalkboard, giving a glance at Ezra mixed with confusion and awe. She quickly changed the superscript "3" to a "2" and nodded. Cally was impressed since most of the other plumerians she worked with were amazing at forensic science, but knew little about other forms of biology. When he returned occasionally for other cases, Cally would attempt to strike up conversation. Even though Ezra seemed unwilling at first, Cally eventually got him to talk a little about her theories, and after a while longer, his line of work. They became "frenemies" in the way that they try to prove each other wrong, but actually help each other out. Ezra argues about what logic Cally is attempting while Calypso points out the arguments the other side of the court could use against him. Ezra, being as stubborn as he is, enjoys the challenge and rivalry of Calypso while still being a step up. When Calypso stepped away into the field of cancer research, she talked to him a little less, for lack of the work connection, however occasionally she calls him to talk about how work is going and begin a friendly rivalry. Their relationship never truly stretched outside of work-related discussions. Ezra made it clear he isn't fond of close relationships, so Calypso backed off. She only started talking to him as much as she did because she wanted to help the kind person who helped her.

ImageBeing that Calypso lets others take control and make decisions for her, the relationships she makes influences her life greatly. The traits of the plumerians she knows combine to create who she is. A large portion of her core personality comes from her parents actions and words, where as other interests come from later in life, such as her violin playing with Nick. Other than a few core parts of her personality, she trusts others easily and will follow others and their morals. Her friendships are important because they leave influence that help Cally. As Calypso tries her hardest to make her friends laugh and please her parents, she finds she wants to make a positive influence on somebody else.

"Why didn't you take that opportunity?
You deserve it the most,
so you should have been the one
to take your throne."

Wesson and Cally grew up as childhood friends; the two were inseparable during the very early years of elementary school. Wesson talked about not wanting to judge people like the covers of books. Even though both he and Calypso were very young, he acted mature in the way that he tried to see the good in others. As a kid he wanted to be the hero type, which Cally admired greatly and together they would talk about how they would be heros together, saving the world with great powers and magic.

However as time grew on and the two became older, Wesson started to become more and more like his dad, a hunter. In his eyes, his dad was a great man, so he no doubt in his quest to become like his father. His morals and sense of heroism changed. Calypso was still set in the mind of a hopeful elementary student, whereas Wesson wished to become an adult. When Cally would talk about wanting the power to heal, Wesson would usually reply with a smile and telling a great story of his powerful desires to save others, but there soon came a day when his only response was that magic didn't exist. The two were still friends all through middle school, but the atmosphere seemed different. Their thoughts were far different and Cally couldn't accept the ways of a hunter. She usually trusted others and accepted all beliefs, but something within her core made an exception to the one job her friend was pursuing. Naturally, they didn't talk as much. Time pulled them apart slowly as if drawn by magnets to the other side of the Earth. The more time that passed, the more that the two realised how different they were.

Neither of the two talked at all the first year of high school. The groups of friends the two made were completely different, to the point where they hardly saw each other just walking class to class. One day, she heard rumors of a boy moving out of state. It didn't occur to her who it was, and even though she felt bad for the one moving, she had no personal connection.
After the next year passed, she looked up from her own little world to find her childhood friend gone.

Cally felt guilty for not talking to the one she considered her friend years ago, but at the same time, she accepted it. Wesson always seemed like he was well off and could do stuff on his own. Often he refused help and seemed to never need it. Calypso's relationship with him ended at that point. She thought she would never see him again, but years later in college she met him by chance when she decided to enroll at Tulane University School of Medicine. Meeting him again took her by surprise and she probably would have never recognised him if it weren't for the fact he seemed to recognise her as well when she walked by. The curious stare triggered a thought in her mind of who it was and she nearly broke into tears as she called out, "Wesson? Haha is that you!" He gave a nod of his head and walked over with a smile. He greeted her to the city and welcomed her to the town. Cally was pleased by his introduction, but something seemed off. "I thought you moved to Kansas city?" Cally asked with confusion. Wesson looked down at the ground for a moment then caught my gaze again as he started to reply, "I did . . ." He began to tell about how his parents almost completely ignored him for two years as they valued work over him. The ignorance of the parents he used to look up to caused him to run away from home. Instantly Cally felt a rock in her stomach as she tried to swallow how selfish she had been; she had accepted a friend moving away as no big deal and abandoned him right before he needed somebody most. Cally averted her gaze and muttered a sorry, barely audible.

They exchanged numbers to talk occasionally if something came up, the fact of them being so different only became more true as time passed, so they never became as close as they were in the beginning. This proved to be most true when Wesson suggested her going into Pharmaceutical practices when Cally gave up on being a heart surgeon. He brought up the points of not having to take any more years of college and the stable wage, but Calypso disagreed. She wanted to help somebody. With that thought in mind, she transferred to Harvard Medical School and repeated the past once again as the two went their separate ways.

Estelle and Calypso never truly had a definite relationship, the two of them met only because the fact that they both walked the same backstreets a few times. On the way to work Cally has a routine of giving a dollar to a passing less fortunate plumerian she finds in the back alleys. She tries not to stray too far into the "bad side of town", but a few times she has made it to places where she has to be cautious. During these times, she has run into a starry blue plumerian quite often. Being that the plumerian had a tougher build and showed themselves quite a few times while Cally was walking by, she thought the plume was the villain. She often walked faster when she saw the gleam of their eyes in the shadows and avoided walking streets where she has contantly seen them. However, once the plumerian spoke up, noticing Cally was weary of them. They apologized for bringing fright and stated their name, Estelle. After Cally asked, Estelle went on to explain why they took back alleys and complemented Cally on her kind actions. They only wanted to avoid the crowd so never took the main roads while walking. Their actions were strange enough by speaking up to Cally, a stranger on the streets. Calypso broke into laughter over the fact that she thought the plumerian meant harm and then stated her name and the reason she wondered the streets. The two occasionally see each other and sometimes talk, but never really bonded as friends being Estelle's quiet nature and Cally's busy schedule. However, Cally always felt a tad safer walking through the dark streets, knowing that there was a plume with expertise who would most likely take her side in a fight.

Calypso - Parents

Calypso constantly refers to herself as being born with "a perfect double six roll." She describes the parent relationship, academic ability, and financial structure of hers being perfect. Some suggest the more wealth the better, but Cally argues that just leads to a selfish nature. Both of her parents have been supportive and always there for her. Their personalities reflect in Cally's own, as they had the biggest impact on her. One of the major impacts was generosity. Both fathers of Cally were kind and loyal plumerians. They made sure that Calypso knew how important it was to help others. A healthy relationship has always been present so Calypso can turn to her fathers whenever she need to talk to somebody. It never bothers her she lacks a mother, for her fathers can be just as motherly as any. Cally doesn't believe the genders have an effect as long as they are good parents. Unlike most teens, Cally had no shame being caught in public with her parents. Her friends considered her parents "the cool dads" whenever they came over. She always loved both her dads no matter what and believes her fate of who she was born to couldn't be any better.

Kyler was always the more serious parent of the two. He has good humor and makes an occasional joke, depending on the situation, but usually leaves the humor to Taupada, despite the amount of eye rolls Cally gives Taupada when he makes a horrible pun. Since Cally was his only daughter, he spoiled her and was always there to teach her something new. Everything from music to math was inspired by Cally's dad. He would always take time out of his day to sit with Calypso to go over homework and talk about how her day went. Whenever Cally needed help with something, she almost always went to her Dad. Part of the reason why Cally's grades were so high in both high school and college was because the determination her dad taught her. He emphasised that people should carry their own weight if given a good life. He was the one who taught her that the people with good lives should help the others with poor fate. Ky always encouraged Cally to dance, and though she wasn't good, she would always try, especially as a kid. Ky enjoys the flute and his interest in the dreamy instrument inspired Calypso to find soft, hand-played music. Her heart always leaned more towards the strings, but the flute was the instrument which allowed her to find orchestral music. Ky was always extremely attached to his little girl and was the first parent to cry when Calypso went away to college. He always worried about her, but Taupada would remind him that Cally can do things on her own.

When Cally was away at college, during the second year, she realised she had royally screwed up. She had a fear of blood and yet decided on taking classes to become a heart surgeon. The medical simulation classes she took were too much for her which finally led her to the conclusion that the career she wanted was not right for her. By this point however, she had already used a lot of money and got an associates degree in medicine. Calypso had no idea what to do at this time. Her old childhood friend, Wesson, suggested pharmacist, but Cally wanted a career in something that could help people. Not knowing what to do, she turned to her dad. Kyler knew his daughter would be upset in a job of handing out prescription drugs. The job helped millions, but the same drugs could cause horrible side effects and possible death when taken incorrectly. However he couldn't stand to see his child come home from college shaking from the medical classes everyday. After talking about it for a while with Taupada and Calypso, he came to a conclusion that a job dealing with theory would be better suited. Cally was always the best in her class at math and she competed with clubs she took at school to complete math and logic puzzles nationally. He knew she could never touch blood, but she had no problem thinking of how it reacts to other chemicals and the molecular makeup of cells. After a long talk with Cally, Ky shed a few tears and gave her a hug. Cally nodded her head, knowing in her heart she wanted to save lives by researching cancer.

If Kyler is the more serious mother figure, then Taupada is the joking daddy. Cally usually calls him "Ta", "Daddy", or "Taddy". Cally rolls her eyes at every pun he makes but has always enjoyed hanging around him and his fun nature. Ta usually let her get away with more than Ky and he usually gives her more freedom while still making sure she is safe. Taupada was the parent who took Cally out to get her driving license and would let her go off by friends on her own, as long as she called occasionally. He hates seeing Cally upset and will do anything in his power to cheer her up. He always wants what is best for his little girl and loves her dearly no matter what. He isn't as good as Ky with talking about serious situations, but he does try to help. While Ky is more fond of "tough love" Ta would sneak candy to Cally behind Ky's back when she felt down. He always had candy on him and knew which treats Cally loved. Not much of Taupada's silly nature carried onto Cally as an adult, but his pleasant personality probably kept her from being a downer. Even if Cally is obsessed with work, she still has a social life and tries to help her friends in any way possible which she learned was a good thing to do from her Daddy.

Image
One of Cally's best memories was Halloween. Because of her Ta's sweet tooth, one of his favorite holiday's to participate in was Halloween. The two would dress up in homemade costumes, carve pumpkins, and enjoy the night hunting for candy. Their house was always the most decorated. Ky usually stayed behind to hand out candy out the door whIle still dressing up. He made carmel apples while his daughter would go hunting for candy. When she returns the three of them would drink hot chocolate and enjoy the delectable apples. autumn leaves and crisp air remain in Cally's memory and makes her smile every time she sees Taupada. She loved every part of the holiday, all the way down to getting sick from all the candy she ate and making spooky drinks. With Ky's creativity and Ta's silly nature, they would make all sort of halloween themed desserts and games from scratch. Calypso promises that if she ever has kids of her own, she would be sure to celebrate Halloween with them and take her kids to their grandparents the day after to let the adventure continue.

Calypso - Deeper Personality

One of the things that annoys
Cally most is her height.
She was always the shortest
in her class and never grew
past 4'10. Her short nature
is not a sensitive subject to her,
as she laughs at jokes made
about her height, but she always
has a desire to be taller.
She will usually stand up if she is
sitting and talking with somebody
much taller than her. One of the
actions that annoy her most is
when another plumerian sets their
elbow on her head or bends down
to talk to her, however she never
truly becomes angry over this.

There are four string instruments in
a usual orchestra.
Lots of professional orchestras
include brass, woodwind, and
percussion instruments also well
as obscure string instruments
like the harp, but there are the
main 4 orchestra instruments.
The two larger instruments
are the double bass and cello then
there is the violin and viola look
similar, except the viola is larger
and deeper; it plays a completely
different staff than that of the violin.
A large pet peeve of Calypso is when
somebody mixes the
two instruments up.

sound and mean different things
(such as tear and tear), and
even more words that look
different but sound the same.
When others misuse the words
there, their, and they're, it
bothers Calypso tremendously.
Such a simple mistake shouldn't
be such a big deal, but for a
plumerian who believes in
careful word choice, she cannot
overlook it easily. Other mistakes
of similar kind such as misusing
your and you're bother Cally as
well, but not as much.

Wishing for something to come true is plumerian nature. It's inevitable to want something and hope someone will grant your desire. However Cally firmly believes in wishing wells for another reason. Money thrown into wishing wells are often collected by charities or go to the town, to help the locals. Very little money thrown into the fountains and wells are kept for selfish reasons, which is amazing in Cally's eyes. She sees it as something must be given to receive; a coin must be donated to have a chance for a wish. Even though Calypso hardly believes in wishes, she still enjoys donating coins to the water in order to help a cause. When others take coins out of fountains, it annoys her to no end, and if she catches someone in the act she will mention it to them. Dancing fountains and fountains with lights bring Cally to awe and she enjoys seeing them inside cities or fancy buildings. Even without the coin element, Calypso still loves how fountains flow and what atmosphere they bring to the scene. In the rarity she watches dance routines, her favorites are choreographed around water or themed after flowing water. However, her favorite part about fountains is by far the giving element to grant a wish.

Angiosarcoma of the heart, or heart cancer is an extremely rare cancer with no cure and little treatment options. It was discovered almost a century ago, but little improvement on survival rates have been made since then due to lack of research unlike more common cancers. In Calypso's eyes, this was an opportunity to make a difference. All the effort made to cure cancers such as breast cancer and lung cancer were amazing to her, but she felt obligated to take a different side. Even if the cancer is rare, it still has a chance of existing and she knew the last thing anyone wanted to hear was the inevitable truth that there is nothing that can be done. Whoever happened to have the unlucky fate, Cally did not want that plumerian to suffer. Even if she was helping less people, she felt as though she would make a difference easier and the more research done on the rare cancers, the more likely cancer could be cured as a whole. Perhaps that forgotten side of the disease could be more useful than others presume.

Calypso believes in hard work and the only luck in the world being how lucky of the fate you were born with. However, Calypso still enjoys the idea of dreams. The idea of a subconscious thrills her and if she had to pick another science, it would be oneirology. Dreams are a place where she can escape into her own world, even if she has trouble remembering them like she used to. She has always wondered: What goes on behind closed eyes?

Calypso falls in love easily to her dismay. On top of the nonfiction she reads, she will occasionally pick up a romance novel. She always has loved dreaming of her future wedding and seeing all the beautiful couples in movies. The perfect stories of beautiful relationships perhaps put her expectations too high for she finds herself getting depressed over whatever relationship she ended up in. If even one argument comes up, it can cause her to end the relationship. She believes perfect couples should never disagree, which is not always true. She also doesn't try to act on her crushes for she feels dating can lead to selfish acts. For instance, her ending a relationship is very hard for her since it betrays her usual kind and generous personality or even if the relationship is going well, she may spend more time with her lover and abandon those who need her. However if asked, she most likely wouldn't decline, even if in her heart she knows the relationship will end poorly. It would take longer for her to enter into a permanent stable relationship but once she does, she would be loyal until the end, especially if convinced she is still a generous and kindhearted soul. The qualities she would look for most would be a plumerian who is both generous like her and refuses to take advantage of Calypso's gullibility. She would also be interested in working with somebody either in her career or volunteer work or a plumerian unemployed to spend more time with. She has no look or financial preference, but enjoys the "high class" attitude and confidence level from somebody willing to take charge yet lead her in the right direction. Cally can't help but to take attractiveness into consideration, but gender has never mattered to her. Even her desire to find an attractive mate can easily melt away if she finds somebody who needs her loves her, and their personalities match like puzzle pieces.

Lavender is the color of cancer awareness. Many associate pink as being for cancer, but the pink ribbons are specific for breast cancer. During Breast cancer awareness month, Calypso wears pink as much as she can get away with, but at other times during the month, Cally wears lavender. The color fits her natural colors and represents all she works for. Her signature clothing is a lavender scarf that looks like a cancer ribbon when worn around her neck. She wears it almost religiously in the colder months, enjoying walking around with it while drinking a cup of coffee or hot chocolate. She enjoys the warmth around her neck along with the typical fall smell and brisk air. In the winter, she may accompany her scarf with lavender mittens, a white and lavender coat, and black boots with a heartbeat design.
