Prompt 8 - Your Pride and Joy

A pair of youngsters burst into the clearing from behind a wagon, all lanky legs, elbows and knees smudged with leaf mould, voices loud and excited. They're just at that age when androgyny begins to fall away, and the young cling stubbornly to the time before awkward pauses and fumbled hand-holding.

The pair stop as they notice you, their words stumbling to a halt. The shabbier of the them has a small wooden object, which he holds out to you after a moment. It's a little boat, carved from a thick branch with a surprising amount of detail included. The grain is stained with meticulous precision in deep maroons and blues.

"We made it, isn't it wonderful?" The softer of the pair blurts, her expression opening into a proud smile. She glances at the boy, and they grin with small white teeth at each other, the joy they feel in the accomplishment is obvious.

The pair look back at you expectantly. "Do you make things? Or maybe you break them? Tell us a story! A story about something that made you as happy as this, as happy as making this little boat makes us. Something you were so proud of, you had to tell someone, even just a stranger."

"my kids," loki answered instantly with no second thought. "i'm so proud of my kids." he smiled slightly, one of his softer smiles. "all four of them. i never really thought that i was going to have kids because i never found myself to be the fathering type. but now, i couldn't wish for anything more. here, wait, i can show you a picture." he shuffled around in his pocket for his phone, then scrolled through his gallery for a picture. he held out a picture of himself, his wife, and his kids all together. he seemed happy even just seeing the picture. "they were a bit younger at that time, but i really am proud of them, still to this today. even when they just accomplish small tasks. i don't think they could do anything to make me any less proud of them." he glanced at the phone himself, grinning slightly wider.

the pair smiled at the image, seeming happy for loki. talking about his kids and his wife might be the only thing that could forever make him happy enough to tell everyone about. there was absolutely nothing he loved more. he pocketed his phone, assuming they had already seen the picture long enough. "they've gotten older, but they never fail to amaze me and make me proud. i mean, you two might not understand that since you're not very old yet, but maybe one day you will. i'm sure you don't find it nearly as wonderful as i do, but you might see it sometime."

Locke found himself thrown off by the question, having admired the boat that the youngsters made. It wasn’t that he never made anything (he had) but rather, he’d only made one thing that mattered to him. Regaining his composure, he calmly explained his question.

“I made a robot, for a final in my university class, on my final year. While I didn’t know how to make one, I had always wanted to try. So, with some online videos and tutorials, I learned how to make one. I intended it to be simple, as I had limited time to make my final for the class. So, on the day before, I finally managed to turn it on for the first time.”

He bit of a troubled expression, but quickly realizing that, he went back to his usual smile before continuing on. “However, the surprise was, it understood me! When I was fiddling with the remote controller since it didn’t work, I saw it copying my movements. At first, it was a bit skittish from being alive all of a sudden, but it warmed up to me within a few minutes. When I showed it to my professor, he was seriously impressed. I aced the final, and I got a perfect score. I actually still have the robot with me, it’s at home for now. “

The true story was quite a bit more complicated than Locke was willing to tell, but irregardless of its creation, Locke still somewhat felt proud of it. “It’s one of my closest friends nowadays, since it understands me better than anyone else would. Even if I do eventually try my hand at another robot, it just wouldn’t be the same, since it’s my very special first robot. Either way, I’d really like to chat with you two more, but I have to go back and check something.”

Something I had made. I had made many things. Sewn things, knitted things, big things, small things.
But I have made 7 things, 7 beautiful precious things that I will cherish for always and forever. This work of art was not my work, it was ours. Me and Sheepy. These things belonged to us, and without her, I would’ve never gotten them, my 7 beautiful children.

Willow, California, Chai, Marlowe, Quincey, Sydney and little Saturday, will always be my perfect masterpieces. Im so proud with each and every one of them.

Willow, the eldest, the nurturing kind soul, that would trade her life away for anyone she cared for. She doesn’t miss a single day our in her beautiful garden, where she grows red roses for Jasper and purple tulips for Sheepy.

California resembles a younger version of Jasper himself. Her huge ego in a tiny fragile body and a hearts desire to perform to a swarmed crowd, roses thrown in her direction from every angle.

Chai is a misfit, lost in modern society. As her temper can get the better of her, her family understands her struggles with socialisation. Sheepy spends her days watching over her, like Chai’s guardian angel, if only I could help, I just don’t know how.

Marlowe is a tough cookie. He won’t let his emotions get the better off him. He is passionate about the environment, and will move walls to protect it, he reminds me of his mother very much so.

Quincey is a bit of a tech wizard. He’s tried showing me how to play these games on his computer, but I just don’t get it. He is the lazy one, but my, he is as gentle as a ladybug.

Sydney seems to always shy into the background, but I can assure you, we always notice, even when he thinks we don’t. He and Saturday are the best of friends.

Then there is Saturday, my my she’s a handful. She won’t let the fact that’s she’s the youngest get the better of her, her attitude, my gosh. Her school results are by far the lowest, but her passion and love make up for it all. That pet rat of hers gets more attention than I do, she loves that little thing to death.

Without my precious 7 children, I wouldn’t know life as it is. Willow is my smile, Cali is my spirit, Chai is my wonder, Marlowe is my strength, Sydney is humbleness and Saturday, Saturday is my motivation.

"I make things!" Morgan perks up at the question. Everything else had been... so dreary up to this point, he was excited to talk about what he did, especially to two kiddos that seemed particularly artistic themselves.

"I've built so much in my life, from the pens I keep my animals in to my own bed frame, but... I don't know if I've ever built anything I needed to show people immediately."

Morgan thought about the question, raising a hand to scratch the back of his neck as he tried to recall something- anything. Nothing in his adult life was coming to him, though, so he tried to push his memories back further until finally, something came up.

"Oh!! When I was young, maybe a little bit older than you two, I made a picture frame for my mom! It doesn't sound like much, but I was so proud of that little frame with all our names carved in it and the little horses I attempted to carve into the corners... I miss it. It was lost about ten years back in a fire- I should remake it some time, huh?"

Morgan laughed quietly to himself before shrugging off the fact that it was gone to the earth now. It hurt to remember it- it had taken him weeks to make when he was so small, but he was happy he could remember it at all, and he gave his thanks and the boat he was still holding back to the two youngsters before heading off to go find somewhere that didn't involve pulling memories from his childhood up.
