It has taken quite a while for you to gather the myriad of feathers laid out in front of you, but you are pleased, nonetheless. Today your cheetah returned with the elusive yellow feather, the last piece of the puzzle. Honestly you can’t quite figure out what they could be used for…maybe a necklace or perhaps to make a toy out of. Regardless of what your imagination has come up with, you decide to head to where the feathers are found to search for clues, the treetops.
The sky is clear, and the air carries a cool breeze that rustles the leaves in the trees, birds are singing, and you recognize the sound of bantam wings buzzing unseen above. You pause and look up, maybe the feathers will attract a bantam…though moon and sunstones already do and the bantam cheetahs that are around are clearly ignoring you. It must be something else then.
Walking deep into the forest, farther than you’ve ever gone before, you pause to catch your breath and take in the beauty of the woods around you. A distinct feeling that you are being watched pricks at the back of your neck. You whip around in time to see a fluffed tail duck behind a tree. Creeping closer, you coo at the hidden creature, recognizing that it is the tail belonging to a cheetah. Suddenly from behind the tree a flash of green swoops up and onto a branch above your head. The sun catches its face just right and its cheeks shine with an iridescent yellow and pink shift. The cheetah gives a warning hiss and spreads its wings to make itself bigger, and you involuntarily gasp. You know of a few cheetahs that have wings, but rarely were they feathered like this.
You almost forget you are holding feathers of your own and you quickly arrange them on the ground in an artistic manner, hoping to gain this cheetah’s trust and affection. It is very interested in the feathers and gracefully alights on the ground. It gathers them into its mouth then promptly begins to follow you home. Congrats, you’ve discovered a new subspecies of cheetah. The Featherwing!
