Gallows Hill - Danvers MA
"The story of 18 people accused as witches in the 1692 Salem Witch Hysteria ends as victims at the end of a hangman’s rope on Gallows Hill, otherwise known as Witch Hill or Witchcraft Hill. You would think such a public and awful event at that spot would have made such a huge impression on people that the location would live forever if only in infamy. Yet today, the exact location of the hangings, and even which hill is Gallows Hill, is not precisely known." (Intro; Daniel V. Boudillion)
"First, he [Salvatore Trento] says the footing stones for the gallows are still visible. I have seen the stones he talks about, but the problem is that the accused were not hung on a gallows. Rather, they were hung from the branches of trees. Researchers have combed the meticulous records of the trial era, and not one mention was found of a gallows, and more tellingly, there is no record of the cost to purchase wood and construct such a gallows." (Salvatore Trento Takes A Stab; Daniel V. Boudillion)
"Nurse family tradition is that when Rebecca Nurse was hanged on July 19, 1692, that her youngest son Benjamin, then 26 years old, rowed his boat under cover of darkness from the Nurse homestead to Gallows Hill to retrieve her body." (Rowing Rebecca Home; Daniel V. Boudillion)
As we near Samhain [Pronounced SO-wen], also known as All Hallow's Eve, or Hallowen, I get more and more excited. This is the time where the veil between the living and the dead is the thinnest, and we light our Jack O' Lanterns to guide our family spirits home to us for this one night(: I am most excited because my ancestors may not have had anything to do with the Witch Hysteria(My Papa was from Ireland and my Nana is from Poland), my religion does, and I mourn the loss of my people back in 1692, accused of being Satan worshippers when we were innocent all along.
I've wanted to visit Gallows Hill because it's not that far from where I live (maybe a half an hour to a hour away) and I would love to just take in the view, for I have heard it was BREATHTAKING. I've been to Salem, MA millions of times, it only takes 40 minutes by minivan (lol my car is sucky) to get there, and the whole place is beautiful including the docks, the little shops, and the gorgeous fountain that you just simply cannot miss when you walk down the brick sidewalks. My favorite part of Salem is one of their older stores that I have been visiting for 14 years; Myths & Maidens. I got my first fairy dust necklace there when I was 5 (then lost it when I was 6), it's where I first met an old friend of my mom's friend (complicated much?) who taught me how to make my very own Book of Shadows (which I still treat like it's a lifeline to this very day), and where I will always go for everything Pagan and Wiccan.
I love Salem, MA. BUT... It would be an honor to sit on top of Gallows Hill and watch the sunrise, taking in the sight, feeling the presence of my people around me, and laying in the grass, becoming one with Mother Earth.
Tell me what you think!!~<3
