king the ruler of the kingdom, what he says goes no matter what. the crown is often passed to the eldest son from his queen since daughters are often married off to other nobles for alliances. females don't often hold much power in the kingdoms, but the king's wives often have his ear and can sway his opinions and choices.

queen the primary wife of the king, similar in rank to a lead mare in a horse herd. she is often the first wife of the king and a female of high breeding, such as a crown princess from another kingdom or a noble's eldest daughter. the queen's power is primarily over other females instead of everyone like the king. she is obeyed by the other wives and the nobles' wives, but noblemen don't obey her commands, they do respect her though. the queen's level of influence depends on her relationship with the king. if they don't get along, then she will likely be ignored by everyone. if they have a strong bond, then she will likely be obeyed by even the noblemen in their attempt to gain favor with the king by giving his queen more respect.

crown prince[ss] the children of the queen. they are the ones next in line for the crown or arranged marriages for alliance. sons are primarily what the king would want since the crown will be passed to a son first. if the queen doesn't have any sons, then the crown will pass to the eldest son from one of the king's other wives. crown princesses are often used as pawns in alliances, it may not be very appealing, but it's just what happens. if there is more than one crown prince, the younger ones often become ambassadors or commanders for the military aspect of the kingdom. it's rare, but a crown princess is able to become an ambassador or commander as well should she decide to do so.

duchess the other wives of the king. they don't have any power aside from respect given by everyone, but if they are close to the king they could use their influence to change his mind on different matters. many of the king's wives are daughters of noblemen or princesses from other kingdoms.

prince[ss] the children of the other wives of the king. though they are considered princes and princesses, they don't really have any power besides respect given. should the queen fail to give the king a son, the eldest prince from the other wives will be named crown prince and the heir to the crown. they are often used as pawns as well for political gain with arranged marriages or ambassadors.

earl/count the third highest rank a male can achieve, the first being the king and the second being the crown prince. they have the second highest ranked family unit in the kingdom which gives them quite a bit of power over others. they can have up to 4 wives along with their countess, the most of the noble houses. the title of earl/count is often passed to the countess' eldest son, but can be passed to the eldest son of one of his other wives should the countess fail to have any sons.

countess the primary wife of an earl/count, similar to the lead mare of the family. she doesn't have the power of the queen, but she's still respected as a noblewoman. her children are given the title of lords/ladies and the title of earl/count is passed to her eldest son, but if she has only girls or no children at all, the title will go to the eldest son of another wife. her children often become either pawns for alliance marriages, they can become military leaders, or they could decide to start their own noble family group.

the other wives are given the title of 'lady' and their children are also given titles of lords/ladies. should the countess fail to have children or sons, the title of earl/count goes to the eldest son from the other wives. their children are often just marriage pawns, but many seem to prefer to join the military or start their own family in town. many have become shop owners in town, earning plenty of income for their family.

viscount the fourth highest rank a male can achieve, just under that of the earl/count. his family is also the third highest in the kingdom which earns them some power in the royal courts, but not as much as the earl/count's family. the title will be passed to his eldest son, either his viscountess' eldest or that of one of his other wives if the viscountess hasn't had any sons. since he doesn't hold as much power in the royal courts, he is allowed only 3 other wives along with his viscountess, one less than the earl/count.

viscountess the primary wife of the viscount, similar to the 'lead mare' of the family. she doesn't hold much power at all in the royal courts, but she's still respected as a noblewoman. her eldest son will gain the title of viscount, but if she fails to have any sons, the title will fall to the eldest son of the other wives. her children are given the titles of lords/ladies, just like the other wives' children. the other wives themselves are given the title of 'ladies'. many children from the other wives or even the viscountess choose to join the military or other royal courtly duties or even become shop owners to gain more money for their family.

baron the lowest rank in the royal courts both personally and family wise. they don't have much power at all in the courts and are often overlooked by the higher ups. they still get some respect since they are still a noble, but not nearly as much as the others. since they are so low in the ranks, they only get 2 other wives along with their baroness. many barons only have their baroness since many noblewomen prefer to go after the earl/count or the viscounts. only the commoner females seem interested in gaining favor with a baron.

baroness the primary wife of a baron, the 'lead mare' of the family. like her baron, she's often overlooked and ignored in court politics. they don't have any power in the courts and are often ignored, respect is not really given by the higher ups. her eldest son will gain the title of baron, but if she doesn't have any sons, the title goes to the eldest son of the other wives. the children of the baroness and even the other wives, tend to join the military or do their own thing in town. some even decide to leave altogether for another kingdom or traveling.

lord/ladies the children of the nobles. the eldest son of a earl, viscount, or baron can gain their sire's title. daughters are often used as leverage in political alliances and younger sons join the military. those who can break away and do their own thing often become travelers who join other kingdoms or become shop owners where they can make good wages. some sons also start their own families and try to become nobles on their own.

knight/dame the soldiers and guards of the kingdom. they are knighted by the king himself in a ceremony which can contain a group of those to be knighted or a single potential knight. males have the title of knights and are called 'sir' while females have the title of dames and are called 'madame'. a knight/dame can be either a soldier of the kingdom and be a part of the calvary, or they can be a personal guard for the royal family or a noble family or even a rich commoner who can afford it. some knights/dames even become mercenaries for hire who travel around and take contracts with whoever can afford their services.

commonfolk the simple townsfolk who live in the town next to the castle. they can be shop owners, employees of different shops, farmers, or any kind of any other job or service. they make up the majority of the kingdom's population. it's very rare, but a commoner can work their way up from nothing to become a noble or even a king's wife should they catch his eye. should a commoner become a noble or even a royal, they are often frowned upon by the other royals and nobles due to their 'poor blood'.

servants commonfolk who serve others as their job. many work in the castle as servants of the royal family or in the surrounding noble houses to serve the noble families. some enjoy their work while others don't and believe they are stuck in the role either because they are too poor to do anything else or it's a family job. many royals and nobles tend to look down upon their servants, but most view their servants as an extended family especially those who have been with the family for many years.

loners/rogues those who don't belong in any one set place. many of them are simple travelers who either travels to explore or travels for their job. on the other end of the spectrum, there are also bandits and rogues who attack other travelers and rob them. many caravans who travel between kingdoms tend to have armed guards on some roads.

ambassador someone sent to another kingdom to represent their home kingdom. they are the eyes and ears of their kingdom while in another and it's their job to represent their kingdom's ideals and beliefs. it's a tough job, but an important one. they are often a younger son or daughter of the king either from the queen or other wife.

advisor those who advise a king. they are often the noblemen of the kingdom and don't necessarily have the title of 'advisor'. in the kilven convoy, the advisors to the young king are the noblemen of his kingdom and are called advisors instead of nobles to limit confusion.

anatomy since centaurs are such an odd creature, being half man/half horse, their anatomy is quite odd as well. they actually have 2 hearts, a smaller one in their human chest and another much larger one in the rib cage of their horse half which is the primary heart. should the larger heart become damaged, a centaur will die, but their smaller heart can be damaged without jeopardizing their life. the smaller being more of an extra push for the blood to reach all the way to their brain, but isn't as important like their larger heart. it's possible for a centaur to loose their smaller heart and live for several years doing only light work.

they have 2 sets of lungs as well, an upper and a lower set. the upper set is in the human thorax and is primarily used for speaking and oxygen flow to the brain while the lower set is used for running and oxygen flow for the rest of the body's muscles and organs. their windpipe is very long and branches off to fill their upper set first before carrying on to fill their lower set. in reverse, their upper set exhales first then their lower set empties.

their digestive system is primarily in their horse half with their stomach being the size of a horse's and their intestines being quite long since they must pull a lot of nutrients to fuel both their human half and their horse half which takes a lot of energy, especially when the centaur is in an active job or does heavy work.

all their other internal organs such as spleen, liver, kidneys, etc. are all in the horse half and are sized to fit the large frame.

adult male centaurs are also referred to as 'stallions' while females are referred to as 'mares', since a lot of terminology is derived from equine terminology.

they can also live to 150 years with the average age of death being closer to 100. they mature at around 16, but aren't considered young adults in society until age 18. fertility in females starts to decrease around the age of 60 and a mare's reproductive system stops completely by the age of 70. stallions loose fertility as well around age 70, but still have a small chance to produce offspring up until they die.

reproduction their reproductive organs are the same as normal equines with some changes. male reproduction is generally the same since it doesn't get in the way of other changes for the centaur's physique. female reproduction is a little different since they have larger offspring than a normal foal. females have wider hips to allow for easier birth and their internals will expand quite a bit as the unborn foal grows. since centaurs are mammals, females do produce milk. they can produce milk in both their human half and their horse half, but their human half will dry up after the first week or two since they only contain colosseum or the vital first milk that helps offspring gain much needed antibodies. once a child gains the ability to stand on it's own and hold itself up, they can then move to the horse half to feed instead.

child rearing centaur offspring are born rather underdeveloped compared to horse foals since they must be able to exit the birth canal without getting stuck or injured. since children are unable to walk or hold themselves up, they are held by their mother or relative in slings so they are able to grow and develop enough to stand on their own. once they are able to stand and hold themselves up, they are nursed by their mother's horse half's udders since her human glands dry up around the time their child is able to stand on their own. it's not uncommon for mothers to nurse other wives' foals.

centaur children are often called 'foals' and males are referred to as 'colts' while females are 'fillies' until they reach maturity as a teenager then they are 'stallions' and 'mares' respectfully.

as they grow and mature, many youngsters get rebellious and act out, but stay with their family units until they are at least 18-years-old, though many prefer to leave at 16 instead.

horse builds/breeds there aren't any set 'breeds' of centaurs, only build types such as hot-blood, warmblood, and draft. the different types of builds are based off of actual horse breeds, but the breeds themselves won't be used, only used as references.


small pony any build under 12.2 hands is considered a small pony build; these are often depicted as shetland ponies, welsh ponies, exmoor ponies, and ponies of the americas.
large pony those larger than 12.2 hands yet shorter than 14.2 hands; often depicted as american sportponies, american quarter ponies, connemara ponies, and highland ponies.

hot-blood thin and light framed; often depicted as arabians, akhal-tekes, anglo-arabians, moroccan barbs, pintabians, shagya arabians, and spanish barbs.
heavy hot-blood still rather light framed, but heavier than the normal hot-bloods; often depicted as thoroughbreds, andalusians, and lusitanos.

warmblood well rounded and one of the most common types; often depicted as morgans, appaloosas, quarter horses, mustangs, standardbreds, and tennessee walkers.
heavy warmblood on the taller and heavier side, some of the most common build types; often depicted as most show breeds such as the warmblood breeds [dutch, swedish, belgian, etc.], hanoverians, holsteiners, and oldenburgs.

light draft on the lighter side and aren't as bulky; often depicted as black forest horses, fjords, friesians, and gypsy vanners.
draft large and stocky, but not necessarily 'heavy'; often depicted as percherons, mammoth jacks [draft/donkey], spotted drafts, suffolk punches, and irish draughts.
heavy draft very large and heavy; often depicted as shires, clydesdales, ardennais, belgian heavy draft, and vladimir heavy draughts.



appearances as with real life horses, their horse half can come in a multitude of colors with even more types of markings. the human portion tends to reflect that of their horse half with their head hair being the same color as their tail. their human skin is the same shade as their horse skin underneath their coat so dark skinned horses will have darker skinned human halves. coat color doesn't always allude to the horse skin shade though, some horses are pink skinned with dark coats while light coats have dark skin. should someone have paint markings, their human skin will also reflect this but the amount can differ from centaur to centaur with some having pale patches all over their human skin while others have only a few patches up their torso.

about genetics as with real life, genetics play a major role in how people look on the outside such as eye color or hair color or even gender. when an offspring is created, each parent contributes a single chromosome to that offspring, but those chromosomes are also mixed around before the offspring is created. it's tails are switched around or changed creating a unique chromosome for that offspring. those tails are called alleles and they are what makes the offspring have certain traits.

some traits are considered dominant while others are considered recessive. a dominant trait, depicted as a capital letter, will always express over a recessive one, depicted as a lower case letter, so to express a recessive trait the alleles must both be the recessive trait. since offspring get 2 chromosomes they will have 2 letters for each trait [ie. BB or Bb]. the strength of the expressed trait can vary depending on other factors but the base color is what the letters will show. should a recessive trait be attached to a dominant trait, it's possible to carry that recessive trait along to further offspring which can eventually be expressed when that offspring pairs with another carrier.

below is a list of different traits for both the human half and horse half of your centaur that can be used in your form. this isn't a mandatory thing, but it sure is a fun one when your centaur is going to have a child. by using punnett squares, you can determine what traits the offspring might have when it's born.

class system like most kingdoms, there is a set class system in place mostly by word of mouth and tradition. there are royals, nobles, the gentry, and the rabble. moving between classes is highly frowned upon, especially when a common rabble is able to move up to the rank of noble or even a royal. loving across classes is forbidden, but it happens more than people think and is surprisingly common. though it's common, the forbidden love is always hidden from public scrutiny and kept secret.

clothing/accessories clothing and jewelry is a big thing in the kingdom, it's an outward sign to everyone of their prosperity and power standing. the higher up someone is in the class system, the more extravagant their clothing and accessories are since they can afford it.

there are casual outfits, more formal attire, and even very formal attire for things such as coronations or royal parties. the royals have their own seamstresses and tailors who come to the castle to measure and craft things for the royal family. some nobles have their own crafters as well, though many go into town to get their clothing and accessories.

commoners and the lower class tend to wear more muted colors and not many accessories since it only gets in the way of their jobs. the higher up in the ranks they are the more vibrant and colorful their clothing is and the more accessories and jewelry they wear since they often don't have laboring jobs that would damage them.

economy like every other organized settlement, money is exchanged for goods or services. a lot of the upper class has the physical money like notes and coins while the lower class uses more of a barter system where they exchange goods or services for other goods or services instead of using actual money.

fall into decline with the king's failing health. enzo has been in hatha for o
nly about ten years and has worked his way up to become one of the best b
lacksmiths in the kingdom. he is often sought out by nobles for his craftsma
nship with different jewelry and accent pieces. his best work is his beautif
ully crafted decorative swords and daggers as well as his deadly yet still pe
rfectly crafted weapons. though he's had some flings in the past, enzo isn't
really one to settle down and start a family, something his parents hated b
efore they died before he moved to hatha. they had always wanted him to
settle down with a pretty little mare and have loads of kids, but enzo wasn
't fatherly material, he's too gruff and unfiltered to be a good role model. e
nzo had met a lovely female once a few years ago while still building up his
trade, but she broke his heart. she had caught his fancy with her tough wor
ds and attitude so he pursued her and did his best to court the mare. he th
ought it was working with how much flirting and time spent together, but it
was all a lie. a week before he planned to propose, he learns she wasn't int
erested in him at all, only his money and attention. enzo was livid and hurt
and has since shut himself off from everyone not wanting to get hurt again.

born in a neighboring kingdom, but stayed only a few years before her famil
y moved to hatha. sophia was raised in hatha as a commoner since her fami
ly was new and needed to prove themselves to the royal court. her father b
ecame a baron when she was a young teen and then worked his way up to a
viscount when she was about nineteen. since she was of age and a noble m
aiden, sophia was quickly offered up to the king as a bride when one of the
royal wives passed away. she was one of many daughters offered up as brid
es to the king, but she was the lucky one to be chosen. at least that's what
everyone claims, that she was lucky, but she didn't feel very lucky since she
didn't want to be a wife and only agreed since her family would be shamed
should she reject the king. since she didn't want to be a wife, sophia made
plans to be striped of her title. for almost six years, she used herbs to prev
ent herself from becoming pregnant. when she was around twenty-five, th
e king finally got tired of her barren womb and kicked her out of the royal
family. her family wasn't shunned because of her apparent barrenness, but
they were left on thin ice so sophia left the courts altogether and became
a commoner. the move helped her family regain their respect and gave so
phia what she wanted. freedom. she now works as a herbalist in the town.

Family: Out of all her family, Zoru gets along with her brother, Eldrud, the best. This is not to say the two are friends, since he, her mother Valk and father Nedhen are exasperated by her at best. Her other siblings, Erla and Selzah, both found her unending energy tiring, and, since they left home for work and study, Zoru hasn't heard from them since her late childhood. Her family is well-known, but have been slowly losing acclaim and funds for over two decades now. Their fade into unimportance was halted by Zoru's appointment to the royal guard, but they still teeter on the edge.
Relations: As a royal guard, Zoru has had brief meetings with Evolett, whose free spirit she finds admirable. Mainly, however, she has been assigned to guard Menet, though her carefree attitude has jeopardized this position more than once. Despite this, she cares a great deal for Menet, who she finds easy to talk to, and admires his spirit.
Background: Zoru was an unruly child, needing constant attention from her elder siblings lest she wander off and end up playing places she shouldn't. Since a short while before her birth, her family's noble status has been teetering, and her parents were greatly relieved when she found an honorable calling in the royal guard.

Crude, yet enigmatic, Zoru's strange temperament hasn't brought her much in the way of close friends. Despite this, she is an outgoing mare, and not disliked by her fellow guards, though they find her puzzling and are often caught off guard by her directness. She finds it difficult to stay serious, regularly cracking poorly timed jokes, or daydreaming and messing around. Family: Menet's family, the royal family, needs no introduction, which is sometimes a brief annoyance for him. Though he hates all the niceties and dancing around, he does care for his family, and is glad to be a part of something so important.
Relations: Though he hasn't had many chances to leave the castle, he is on good terms with many inside it, especially his guard, Zoru, whose company is always uplifting and fun.
Background: When things went wrong for him as a child, Menet always found a way to put them right, or, much to his family's dismay, found someone to blame. He's had a strong sense of good and evil since his younger days, though it wasn't always correct. His strong moral compass has stood, though changed, until today.

Above all else, Menet is stubborn. Some would call it determination, others difficultness, but backed by an unwavering sense of justice, most see Menet's unyielding nature as a strength. He has grown enough from his childhood, however, to learn to see the things he can't change and make the best of them. This restraint often shocks those who know him, especially those who have been close to him for a long time, since this side of his doesn't show often.
