kabane has always been a bit broken. not in the way that so many others feel, whether they're plagued by anger and hatred or sadness that thy just can't shake, or fall victim to violent tendencies they'd rather not see themselves as capable of. no, instead, it'd be more accurate to say he was born missing a piece. calm, in one fashion or another, is the only way in which kabane operates. there's no urgency or fiery temper in him. bordering on lazy, he often takes a slow and unworried approach with things. empathy is another thing he lacks, feeling little for others but also wanting nothing in return from them. he never expects or accepts help or charity in any form and sees it as his responsibility alone to look out for himself. that said, kabane doesn't mind company and, for his laid back attitude, is amiable and pleasant enough to be around. even if he doesn't always understand others, it doesn't mean he doesn't enjoy spending time with them. he can actually be quite social and often takes an interest in the coming and goings of other demon slayers. overall, he can be a little empty-headed at times but generally doesn't mean any harm by it. the only times he'll show any sort of focus or drive are in fights. and outside of those, he's more or less harmless and easy going.
in his failed attempts to actually properly learn any breathing styles to their completion, kabane actually ended developing one entirely of his own. well suited to his flighty and somewhat lazy demeanor, he ended up with a jack of all trades, master of none sort of style. cobbling together basic techniques he learned from many different mentors, their teachings ranging from water and mist to wind and thunder, as well as adding his own touches, he formed what he calls weather breathing. often drawing inspiration from clouds, rain, storms, and the like, he formed a style all his own while barely being proficient in any of the others on their own. he's still working out the kinks, though, and making modifications to better suit him and his fighting style.
kabane earned his nickname, meaning 'corpse', for his lackadaisical and and irresponsible habits in combat. wherever he fights, casualties follow behind and line the paths he walks. he has no malicious intent, but a laid back and lazy nature and occasionally questionable moral compass lead him to care little about protecting innocents or bystanders. instead, he simply does his job and slays demons, regardless of how many people he or the demons kill in the process to get there. - also, he will answer to hanayuki, hiiragi, or kabane without any care for which name is used.
