- ► PERSONALITY. Cold, calculating, and argument-prone, Nova is the very
definition of not playing well with others. She is happy to be a loner;
independent and alone is the best way she lives. She isn’t particularly serious
or stoic, though her real emotions rarely rise to the surface—anger is what
most expect to see from her, as she’s quick to snap and throw insults, and she
isn’t particularly well-adjusted due to a rocky home life (which is mostly her own
doing). A lot of her time is spent brooding or trying to get ahold of her emotions.
Though not tall in stature, her manipulation of darkness and fear can make her
loom in a way that makes her seem intimidating, or at least she hopes it does.
Underneath her shell, Nova can be gentle and kind—it just takes time to
get past her front, and she’d be the last to blame someone for not wanting to
spend that time on her. Spending time with like-minded people and those with
similar attitudes to hers appeases her, though she still needs time alone from
such friends. (And it’s a tossup whether she’ll actually call them “friends.” The terms
“acquaintances” and “associates” are far more likely to leave her mouth.) Although
ultimately unconcerned with others’ business, she’s prone to being outwardly
judgmental. Despite her standoffishness, Nova also has a bit of a flirtatious streak;
she’s the type to make “so true queen, are you single?” jokes and tends to use them
as something of a defense mechanism. She’s equally prone to being mean as a
flirting technique. However, she’s never—to her knowledge—been fully in love, and
she would be likely to deflect if ever she did.
Nova dislikes the idea of having a destiny set out for her, and wants to determine
her own fate—something that slightly contradicts her actual interests and life choices.
The night sky has been fascinating to Nova since childhood, although only in late high
school did she actively decide to study astronomy. (The decision came as something of
a shock to anyone who knew her, as she’d previously been a writer with plans of
pursuing poetry and prose as her primary career.) She is also quite interested in
astrology and tarot, though she doesn’t rely on them for major decisions. Her other
interests include true crime and the macabre in general, as well as classic literature.
- ► HISTORY. Nova’s mortal mother, a young artist living in upstate New York
named Renée Mochizuki, had never planned for children—a decision that inevitably
influenced Nova’s upbringing when she was born to the woman and the Greek goddess
Nyx. The two were distant, never truly bonding as mother and child. It wasn’t that
Renée was a bad person, necessarily, she just wasn’t destined to be a good parent.
And with her godly mother absent as well, Nova grew to dislike parental (and general
authority) figures.
Her first stay at Camp Half-Blood and subsequent claiming by Nyx was an accident—
Nova, then around age twelve, had stormed out after an argument with her mother,
only to find herself pursued by monsters. She slipped quickly into the shadows and
emerged among demigods like herself.
From then on, Nova couldn’t wait for summer; if she could have stayed at camp all
year-round, she would have, not for its company but the sense of escape and danger.
Still, influence from her surroundings prompted her to be slightly more lenient as
years passed, with her relationship with Renée sliding somewhere more toward tolerance
as of late. During her teenage years, Nova also began facing chronic pain and fatigue,
which have not lessened in the meantime and have worsened with injuries and stress.
