Gabriel Clemens was born Gabriel Clรฉment
in Rouen, France, in 1859. Twenty-six years
later, he was a young doctor on a trajectory
to a respectable career, when a single gun-
shot changed the course of his entire exis-
tence. He had been called to attend to an
emergency late at night, when he got caught
in the crossfire of a struggle in the darkened
streets of Rouen. The shot proved fatal, but
as he lay on the damp cobblestone in the
quivering light of the gas lamps, a stranger
emerged from the shadows of an alley, en-
tirely too nonchalant to suit the sight of a
man bleeding on the street.

That stranger turned out to be a nomadic vampire, who โ for a reason that has re-
mained obscure for all these years โ chose to turn Gabriel. One minute, the feeling
of fading from the world, and the next, excruciating pain. Abandoned, and newly
turned, Gabriel did not know anything beyond the unbearable thirst searing his throat.
Once the newborn frenzy subsided, he could have stopped, but to his later horror and
regret, he did not want to. Not until over a hundred years later, when he found his
long-lost conscience to try and become someone better with the help of the coven.
He hopes to reach a point where he can atone for past sins, perhaps by becoming a
doctor once more. Gabriel's change in diet is so recent that his eyes haven't yet shift-
ed to the golden colour of his peers. Instead, they are closer to the colour of copper,
and a telltale sign of his monstrous past โ a past that still calls to him, but which he
is trying to resist. Gabriel does not wish to let down his coven, who have put a great
deal of trust in him by taking him with them to Devil's Kettle, but most importantly,
he does not wish to disappoint himself, because another decade as a monster might
be too much to forgive. Gabriel's capacity for pacifying patients as a doctor translat-
ed to an ability as a vampire: he can calm panic, soothe nerves โ in the past, this
ability had a more nefarious purpose as a hunter's tool, but he is hoping it will trans-
late well to a more palatable life. Now that Gabriel has begun the arduous process of
reining in his less agreeable qualities, he has become a rather restrained and formal
man. He still tends to appear quite pained around any humans, but he has a certain
dignified charm about him when in the company of other vampires and occasionally
even werewolves as their blood does not appeal to him.
