sorry for the minor delay everyone!

unfortunately since it's been 5 days since we began, anyone who failed to make a starter post will be removed from the roleplay. you are free to re-apply or to simply respond that you would like to step back in, however any high roles that failed to make a starting post have been revoked.

this means that the dog leader role has been taken back. i have decided to just move vivian into the role of dog leader, for simplicity's sake, and dog second is up for grabs. if we have multiple people interested in dog second, we'll poll it!

i am currently writing up a response now. remember that you need to make at least one post every 48 hours! (though this time it was my bad because i was waiting to see if all the starters would be posted before moving too far ahead)

Poor Speckles had only been with his new family for a matter of days when they left him. For awhile, he did not even understand
that all of the humans had disappeared, and assumed that his family's absence was a normal part of his new routine. He was
relatively safe inside his house, but he struggled to find any food that such a young, tiny scrap like himself could salvage. Speckles
might well have starved alone in his house if another dog had not heard his lonesome howling and knocked in one of the open
window's screens to rescue him. Now, he finds himself struggling to keep up in a rag-tag group of disoriented dogs as they all
struggle to make sense of what has become of themselves. At the moment, there is precious little Speckles can do to contribute,
but he tries to keep on his best behavior all the same. It is the least he can do to help out in his own small way. Though his meager
age and tiny body hamper him in using them, Speckles' best skills are his keen vigilance and his resistance to hot weather. As he
grows, these traits may prove useful, but he will have to survive several more months before that can become a reality. The
persistent cough Speckles has developed is not a promising sign.

Xanthos is a ragged old wolf who has already seen many years of difficulties even before he came to live at the wildlife rehabilitation
center. His latest brush with death was caused by a collision with a late-night driver on a country road. Fortunately, Xanthos was
able to get the veterinary care he needed in order to survive. His wounds had healed nicely and he was on the verge of being
released back into the wild when the humans disappeared. Of course, Xanthos himself did not understand much of the humans'
intentions. He simply thought he had been captured to be locked up with strange wolves and experimented on. When the captive
pack decided to attempt to break out, Xanthos was fully on board. He feels a sense of camaraderie with these wolves and now
stays with them willingly. After all, even if he wanted to find his original pack, he has no idea where he is, let alone where to begin
his search. This pack of once-strangers that he finds himself with is all he has now, and that suits him just fine. Xanthos is very
dependent on traditional lupine hierarchies. He is simply not the sort to strike out on his own. Instead, he looks to rank and duties
to tell him what to do. Having to think for himself and invent a worldview from scratch is far too daunting a task to consider
undertaking without significant pressure. Xanthos deeply admires those wolves he sees as befitting a higher rank. Usually, they
would be wolves older than himself, with more wisdom and experience, but a younger wolf can earn Xanthos' respect with some
effort. Xanthos himself intends to give everything he has for the sake of his pack, and hopes to earn a peaceful retirement when he
can no longer keep up with the rest of the pack. In the mean time, Xanthos is particularly well-suited to training pups, as he has
mentored several before. He considers it a great honor to pass on his knowledge and skills to the next generation by way of
creating a legacy for himself.

Nix roamed the outskirts of the cityscape long before all the resident humans went missing. For a young, solitary, opportunistic
coyote, it was a paradise of sorts. Unattended trash cans and the nighttime creatures that gleaned food from them were plentiful.
As long as Nix avoided attracting too much human attention and learned to cross roads safely, she was more or less free to take
what she pleased. This, she happily did. "Work smarter, not harder" became her motto. There was no need to risk running into
woodland predators or waste energy chasing prey when patience and a well-timed pounce worked just as well. Nix had more than
enough practice at pouncing to practically guarantee success once she launched herself into the air. Otherwise, she is more of a
sneaky canine, preferring to avoid problems altogether rather than put herself at risk, but that has gotten particularly difficult to
do lately. After the humans disappeared, Nix initially thought she had free reign of the place. Then, she noticed the local dogs
beginning to band together, all while a pack of wolves moved into the nearby area. Nix will just have to adapt if she wants to
survive these new challenges. Adapting is nothing she has not done before, and she is optimistic that having more canines around
could prove quite fun, once she decides who is safe to approach. Nix has a penchant for flirting as a pass-time. She finds the thrill
of being wanted exhilarating. Actually settling down is another story, but given the right circumstances, it could happen.
