Personality
When first meeting Mizaki, it's hard to imagine her as a former soldier. She's friendly and extroverted, but also gentle, caring, and usually reluctant to use violence if another solution is possible. She's also curious and quite intelligent, and has always been interested in learning about other lands and cultures, taking a particular interest in the Air Nomads and their tranquil, spiritual culture. She has a strong sense of fairness and right and wrong, and is incredibly determined when she sets her mind on something, to the point of being stubborn and headstrong at times, especially when it comes to things she truly believes are right. However, those who get to know her will quickly be able to discover clues to her former identity; despite sometimes seeming carefree at first glance, she's far from it, and carries around a lot of guilt not only for her own actions, but for the actions of the Fire Nation, especially the genocide of the Air Nomads, an event she sees as horrific and inexcusable.
As a former soldier from the Fire Nation and a firebender, she encounters a lot of people who immediately judge her and distrust her out of hand, but due to how guilty she often feels, she understands and often simply accepts it as only fair, working without complaint to prove herself as different from the rest of her nation and worthy of trust. She's also learned that trust is best given out sparsely, and when her trust is betrayed, it will rarely, if ever, be given again. Though ultimately, she wants peace, she's not afraid of using violence and firebending if necessary; she may not quite be an elite soldier or master firebender, but she's definitely no slouch, and a force to be reckoned with against even seasoned soldiers, due to her training and combat experience. All things considered, she's a valuable ally to have in the war against the Fire Nation, with skill, intelligence, and insider knowledge.
History
Mizaki was born and raised in a large city not far from the capital of the Fire Nation. Her father, Izao, was a firebender and worked in the industrial sector of the city, helping to manufacture metal goods, and her mother, Hayami, a nonbender, was a member of the city's security forces who trained her daughter to fight and defend herself from a young age. Mizaki was a friendly, kind, and eager, if headstrong and reckless, child who was thoroughly indoctrinated in the ideas and philosophies of the Fire Nation, believing her people superior. But nevertheless, she was always curious about other lands and cultures, eagerly read about them, and wanted to see them from herself. Her parents had another child, a boy named Eichi, when she was 7, and though at first she was displeased, she quickly warmed to him, loved him, and always looked out for him, even when they fought. She was very happy to discover she was a firebender at age 10, but wasn't careful with her power and accidentally injured a friend before being taught better control by her father. This incident tempered her headstrong, reckless nature and taught her discipline, a lesson which stuck with her for the rest of her life.
Not long after Mizaki turned 13, Fire Lord Sozin launched his attack on the air temple and wiped out the Air Nomads, sparking the beginning of the war in earnest. Even as indoctrinated as she was, Mizaki was taken aback by this action, considering the peaceful, spiritual nature of the Air Nomads. Nevertheless, though, she joined up with the military as soon as she was old enough, wanting to see the world and help spread the prosperity, order, and technological advancement of her nation to the other, inferior cultures, as she had been taught her nation was doing. Actually being on the front lines of the raids in the Earth Kingdom, however, quickly disabused her of her idealistic notions. The Fire Nation destroyed anyone who resisted, dominated those who submitted, and burned whole villages to the ground without a care for innocents. Mizaki frequently witnessed and participated in atrocities that sickened her to the core. But she saw no way out of it; to back out of the war effort would disappoint her family and nation, destroy her honor, and make her a criminal. So instead, she hid her horror from her fellows and secretly helped the people of the Earth Kingdom whenever she could, trying her hardest not to kill and to help innocent people flee before she burned down their homes.
Her secret stayed safe, for a while; Mizaki was a skilled enough fighter and firebender that she was transferred to the front in the Southern Water Tribes to help participate in the raids there, which were particularly difficult for firebenders, considering the abundant waterbenders and cold environment. Nevertheless, the raids advanced, and she continued to help any innocents she could in secret- until the day that her unit caught her helping a small group of innocent villagers flee into the tundra, including a preteen waterbender boy that painfully reminded her of Eichi, before she burned down their homes. Mizaki was given a trial, but the evidence against her piled up as her other deeds were discovered. She refused to lie and plead innocent, instead boldly telling the people of the Fire Nation the truth, and pleading with them to see sense. They did not, and she was found guilty and forced into exile. She never forgot the looks on her parents', her brother's, and her friends' faces; the disappointment, the animosity, and- worst of all- the disgust, which she knew she'd have felt for herself only a few years ago. So she left in dishonor, everything she once cared about stripped from her, and fled to the Earth Kingdom. She hoped to do something- anything- to assist the people there against the Fire Nation she once (and still did, to an extent) loved, but she was rejected as a spy or chased out everywhere she revealed her firebending (which she understood, even if it saddened her). She only found acceptance among people who remembered her as sparing them and helping them to escape, years ago. It is here, in a small, secluded Earth Kingdom village, that she has been living for months now, doing whatever she can to help slow the advance of the Fire Nation and make up for the terrible things she did as a soldier.
