personality; paisley is a outspoken girl and she's passionate about everything she does and always tries to brighten the mood. everyone who knows her can tell she's a sweetheart that can be compared to a puppy in the way she gets excited easily and always want's others to be happy. she's always willing to help the others out even if it's detrimental to her own health, she just forgets about her own needs. after her second parent left/died (?), paisley has been trying to be the perfect daughter. however it's more due to her fear of disappointing anyone than actual 'goodness' or 'perfection.' she has just never been able to stand the look on her parents, mentor, or siblings face when she lost or did something less than wonderful. so she has developed a rather extreme anxiety disorder and an obsession with being the best at everything she does. when it comes to being the 'good girl' paisley is so very sick of the role. she wants very badly to be, well, selfish. she want's to act on her desire to leave and just explore, get out and see the world, get a tattoo and get into trouble, anything. someday she worries she might just snap.

history; paisley was born on a stormy december night seventeen years ago and had a rather boring first few years of life until she was five and took up photography after seeing jessica murphy's photos from the woman's adventures. the woman became akin to a mentor for her, paisley really looked up to her and now it's rare to see her without her polaroid camera. she's also become obsessed with gymnastics and has been doing that since she was a child, winning several competitions. she very rarely got into any trouble but has lately been sneaking out at night to take photographs and rock climb among other things. paisley has grown up in the little community her entire life and has a good understanding of everyone, of course her attention has been drawn to the kim child, who has been her secret crush for quite a long time. now with jessica's passing, well things have been different but she can't say she isn't interested in the trip but she wishes it was through a different sort of circumstances.

bio.eileen is a optimistic and intelligent young women with views she wishes to express but anxieties consistently hold her down. she's been a little awkward most her life but in recent years her shyness has evolved into a perpetual anxiety. unlike her father and sister, eileen can't stand any sort of verbal debate, she turns into a bumbling mess when put under that kind of pressure. maybe if you gave her an hour or two to write up an argument it could be pretty good at the least, she'd be good at twitter fights.. the only problem is that she doesn't own a twitter, eileen's always pretty separated from the internet, her mother often complained about the lack of privacy in the modern day and people's attachments to their electronics so eileen likes to limit her internet use. in fact all of her electronics are relatively outdated, eileen isn't someone who believes that she was born in the wrong era, she doesn't even think that any past generation should be recreated, mostly because oppression. but anyway, she's got a nice technics sl-1700 turntable, a zenith tube radio that's completely useless but looks great, a normal phone because she's a worry wart and her prized possession, a not so vintage canon xa35. jessica gifted this to eileen on her tenth birthday before leaving for a trip to the mojave, the trip was spent with eileen more interested in capturing the views of the desert with her camera than with her eyes and now with her mother's recent passing the camera means even more to her. speaking of her mothers death- it tore her apart. eileen is very affectionate and her relationships are all in so losing someone she loved as much as her mother was rough but she feels like her worries have been a burden to others and now is the worst possible time to be complaining or emphasizing her emotional weaknesses.

Personality: Mia Murphy is the ultimate devil’s advocate, thriving on the process of shredding arguments and beliefs and letting the ribbons drift in the wind for all to see. History: Mia Paige Murphy was born around a minute earlier than her fraternal twin sister, Eileen Murphy. Her parents are Jessica Murphy and Marvin Murphy. Mia Murphy has had a happy home her whole life. Her parents were deep in love, even if they fought on an occasion or two. From the start, Mia liked to push the limits a bit and test how far she could go before getting in trouble. She likes to challenge others and herself by thinking out of the box or forcing others to do so too. Both of her parents worked which caused babysitters to come in and out of that door. She was a nightmare as a child, finding some way to get rid of the babysitter. Mia one time even swallowed a penny on the babysitters watch to just get her parents home. She loved to be in the center of attention and was always a little diva. She wanted to be in the spotlight for everyone to see.

Mia's family has been very close to the Johnson family for her whole life. She even counts the Johnson boy, Archer, as her best friend. She would always tease the boy when they were younger but as they got older, she started to become closer with him and start to be friends. She still teased him of course, but she had always had this hidden feeling inside her. She knew this feeling as a little crush, maybe more than just a little, but she kept it hidden and said that he is her best friend. She doesn't want to ruin their friendship or hurt her sister, who she knows has had a crush on her best friend since they were little. Mia hides her feeling in little teasing remarks but she is starting to let it slip and she is scared about losing him and her sister.

The day she found out her mother had Lung Cancer didn't really affect her. She was just a little too young to understand the meaning of it but as she got older and accompanied her mother on trip to the hospital and then the final trip, she knew that she was losing her mother. She could see her father was putting on a brave face for her and her sister so that is exactly what she started to do for her sister and those around her. She would not let herself be seen as weak in front of everyone. Her silent tears would run down her face at night but would never reach the daylight. Only someone close enough to her will be able to notice her pain, who will that be?

At first glance Arlo is a very loud person, shes extremely extroverted and strives off of attention from others. She is very out-spoken and is incredibly head-strong willing to take charge in any situation, if she has one she will make sure her opinion is heard first, she is very aware that she can come off as overbearing and obnoxious and comments from people will effect her much more then she lets off. Once you get past her loud outer-shell though she is a true sweetheart who is willing to sacrifice her time and well being if it means that she could make the people she loves happy. Shes a drama and literary nerd and excels strongly in subjects surrounding the arts and tends to get pretty good grades in most subjects, math being a personal weak-point. Shes a bit of a troublemaker, she doesn't do anything malicious or annoy people for the fun of it but if the rules need a bit of bending she'll be happy to do it, she's not the quote on quote "bad kid" but she has a rep for getting into a few near scrapes. Arlo mainly lets her heart take the reigns rather then letting her head think threw a more logical answer, she has the brains too she just doesn't really use them. She normally uses her optimistic attitude as a mask to hide her true insecurities, shes constantly battling with self-deprecation and depression but she wouldn't dare let anybody apart from her family know that she's anything but fine. She had a great childhood being raised by her father but without a mother figure in her life she clung onto anybody who came close to representing one, jessica being one of them.{may add more to this as i go along}

Marvin is a weedy man with rusty hair. In his younger days, he had a shock of fiery-red hair, but it has since faded with time. He wears bangs to hide surgical scars near the top of his forehead. He has a specific sense of style; Marvin always dresses in classic, gentlemanly fashion. It's not necessarily expensive taste, as Marv has been sewing his own clothes since he was a teenager. (The hobby originated as a way to account for his lanky teenage sizing, which store-bought clothes couldn't account for, and has since persisted as a smart way to make well-fitting, good-looking outfits specific to his taste.) It isn't difficult at all to tell that he's from a large city, if not in his appearance then in his accent and vernacular. However, it may be difficult to tell that he's Jewish, albeit only ethnically, as he's an atheist.

Personality:

Marvin is a mischievous, sarcastic, wise-guy teenager at heart. He's always had a bit of a temper, but not to the extent of outbursts. Marv recognizes anger as a constructive emotion when harnessed correctly, and so he tries to use it to his advantage. Anger is motivation for a great many people, and as a result, he's one to incite others as a joke or simply to see what they can do. However, fury is entirely destructive, and he tries to stay away from it as much as possible. While his anger may be marked by fast talking and eloquence, his fury is marked by silence. If Marvin ever feels himself thrown toward fury, he allows himself to do nothing, for fear of what might be said. Luckily, the emotion is exceedingly rare.
There is nothing that Marvin loves to do more than debate. As a young child, he absorbed contrasting political views, religions, and social opinions at the same time. As a result, he's able to see the world from many pairs of eyes, and finds merit in almost every facet of an argument. He can defend one side of a controversy flawlessly and vehemently, then immediately argue the opposite side with equal skill. It's not necessarily because he believes in one side over the other, but rather because he simply loves to argue. He actively encourages others to disagree with him on complicated issues because he dislikes the thought of there not being discussion. While he has a gift for talking circles around others with his wit and extensive vocabulary, he does genuinely take pleasure in hearing how others view things, and trying to make them understand how he sees it. An argument with Marvin is an exchange. He stays away from screaming matches and obstinate, unproductive discussions.
In addition, Marvin is a well-read, studious man. He's insatiably curious and skeptical, which often got him into trouble as a young man. He still reads every book he can get his hands on -- often times re-reading them for good measure -- and stays well-informed in political and governmental matters.
To those he loves -- platonically and romantically alike -- Marvin is particularly gentle and affectionate. Before settling down with Jessica, Marvin gave his heart away every week. He was always in love with someone, although not during the years of his law practice, since he was far too miserable and busy then. When he falls for someone, he often goes head-over-heels. With Jessica, he was more dedicated and true than ever, and was more than faithful while they were together. Now, however, he's grieving, and the loneliness hurts more than ever.

History:

Marvin was born and raised in Chicago, Illinois. His family resided in an apartment in Englewood, where they teetered on the edge of poverty. His mother, Ruth, was a native Chicagoan of Ashkenazi descent, and his father, Joseph, was an English immigrant who had converted and married into the city’s Jewish community. Growing up, Marvin was adventurous and curious about other cultures. He would mix with the many ethnic groups both within and outside his own neighborhood, coming to learn a plethora of widely-differing points of view from a young age. By the time he was nine, he had learned to navigate the complex sociopolitical climate, finding himself at home with almost any crowd.
At home, Marvin’s curiosity was spurned by his father. Joseph, being religiously conservative, did not approve of his son interacting with gentiles more than was absolutely necessary. He himself easily passed for gentile, given the fact that he was one until his late teenage years, and often outwardly pretended to be so to maintain his dentistry business in a predominantly-white area. Marvin was infuriated by his father’s hypocrisy; he always chastised Joseph for smiling to his customers and treating them well, then looking down upon their race and religion upon returning home. This led to repeated clashes among the father and son, which often ended with Marvin roaming the streets and intermingling further to clear his head.
Ruth, however, was gentle, kind, and understanding. An unemployed seamstress, she had no job aside from homemaking. But Marvin considered her the hardest-worker of the house. When his father wasn't home, Marv would take interest in domestic skills, and took up learning from his mother. As a result, he learned how to be nearly entirely self-sufficient in a home, and began a lifelong interest in tailorship.
Marv also had a sister three years his junior, whom, after coming of age to roam along with him, he was charged with looking after. The two were close as far as siblings go, although Marvin’s obstinacy and overall hot-headedness would occasionally cause problems between them. Florence was a quiet, timid soul, and so Marvin habitually stuck up for her. However, he couldn't protect her when they were caught at the wrong place at the wrong time, and she was slain in the crossfire from two rival gangs. At the time, Marvin had been fifteen. He’s still greatly affected by the mere thought of it.
As time rolled on, Marv proved to be academically astute. He graduated at the top of his class before advancing to law school. At the age of twenty-one, he became the youngest person to pass the Illinois state bar exam. Immediately thereafter, Marv interned at a pre-existing law firm, then branched out on his own and became a criminal defense attorney. At first, he struggled to get by; he was repeatedly passed over for older lawyers with more experience. Just when Marv was about to hit an all-time low, a mobster decided to hire his services. While Marvin was reluctant to assist organized crime in any manner, he desperately needed the employment. He convinced himself that the job would be a short-term situation to serve only as a break.
One thing led to another, and after proving his prowess in the courtroom, he became the mob's go-to attorney. Marvin helped criminals escape sentencing, and in return, he was paid handsomely. Marvin was suddenly living a fast-paced downhill wreck of a life, stretched thin from a multitude of grueling cases in rapid succession, resenting his job and the people he worked for, and hiding his money away in hopes of retirement. For several years, it seemed that he would be trapped beneath the mob's thumb, as leaving simply wasn't an option.
That was, until Marv started having seizures. When they became unbearably frequent, he went to a physician and discovered that he had a brain tumor. It was both a terrifying medical condition and the perfect escape plan. He immediately retired from his practice, using his ailment as an excuse. He parted from the mob on good terms, and ran far away from Chicago.
After having the tumor surgically removed, Marv landed in Colorado. With a bank account full enough to support him indefinitely, he was determined to learn how to take things slow and adopt a life outside the city. He met Jessica shortly thereafter, and fell madly in love. She brought out the better side of him; when the two were together, Marv was gentler, kinder, more relaxed, and optimistic. In exchange, he tried to be the best partner for her. He cooked, cleaned, and took up the majority of the housework simply because he knew how hard it was, and wanted Jessica to have as little worries as possible. The two married, and nearly a year later, Marv's mother passed away. His father, disapproving of him marrying a gentile, ceased correspondence. However, the latter development didn't bother Marvin a bit, as he was busy building a family with the most remarkable woman in the world. He adored Mia and Eileen from the day they were born, and has tried his best to be a good father to them. He makes a point to practice what he teaches them, and is especially keen to be as calm and gentle as possible. Marvin genuinely loves talking with them and seeing them think for themselves; no prouder man can be found than when Marv is privileged enough to see one of his kids argue -- it doesn't particularly matter with whom, nor over what. Marvin proposed homeschooling the two because he values critical thought over all else, and didn't want them to be trapped in a dogmatic, suppressing school system that emphasized regurgitating information over skepticism and inquisitiveness. To ensure that they're given an excellent education, Marv hires tutors, but he takes the reigns in government. For extra income, Marvin started teaching law at the local college.
Everything was perfect, until it wasn't. Marvin was devastated when Jessica developed lung cancer. He tried his best to remain hopeful -- surely if a sorry man like himself could survive a brain tumor, a warm, loving woman like Jessica could survive this. But she didn't, and Marvin was wishing that it was him instead.
Jessica's death absolutely shattered the man. He has tried to remain strong for the children's sake, but he's still having the worst time with it. A part of him has very clearly been ripped out and incinerated, but he's been so concerned with worrying over how Mia and Eileen are taking it that he hasn't allowed himself the freedom to grieve. On one hand, he doesn't want his children to see him distraught, but on the other hand, the delay is simply making it worse. In all honesty, he doesn't know where to go from here, but he would never allow anyone to know that. He knows that a small college professor's pay won't keep himself and the two children up without the prop of the lucrative savings from his lawyer days. However, a great deal of that went toward medical bills, and while there's still enough to support the three for years to come, it won't get Eileen and Mia through college, much less help anyone after that. While he hasn't discussed it with anyone, Marvin is subsequently considering returning to law as a full-time attorney.
However, there is still much to be explained. Marvin hasn't told his children very much about his past at all. His only immediate relative was estranged and resided far away, along with the less-pleasant details of his past. He isn't proud of it whatsoever, and so he's tried to shield them from it the best he can. There are some things that are impossible to hide -- his Chicagoan accent and surgical scars, for instance. But beyond vague answers (yes, he lived in Chicago a long time ago; the scars are indeed from surgery, etc.), he hasn't discussed anything with them. He simply prefers to focus on the now. However, with the children coming of age to think more critically and clearly, he supposes he may eventually have to explain how they haven't had to worry about money yet, given that his current job clearly couldn't shoulder all the expense on its own.
