• history •
as her name suggests, vera was born in france to a rather large shifter family. they lived in the r
ural outskirts of france, away from the chaos of the cities and mostly kept to themselves. there
were a few other shifter families that lived around them, but vera's family chose to be solitary.
unlike many mixed shifter families, vera's is completely avian, each family member being some
kind of bird. the species ranged from song birds to birds of prey and everything in between. luc
kily, no one in the family has turned out flightless so everyone participates in the flights that ta
ke place once a week. vera grew up in france with her feathered family and was an only child s
o she was practically smothered with love from the day she was born. she had her first shift at t
he age of five like most in her family, but her avian form was a total shock to the whole family.
though they all knew she was a special child, they didn't know just how special she truly was.
instead of a normal eagle or maybe hawk, vera has the shift of an argentavis magnificens. also c
alled the 'great teratorn' or the 'magnificent silver bird', the argentavis magnificens is an ancient
bird of prey that went extinct nearly six million years ago, making vera a 'throw back'. 'throw ba
cks' are rare in the shifter world and have the ability to shift into animals that went extinct man
y years ago, but not as far back as vera. her level of 'throw back' is considered the rarest case se
en in recent shifter history since most 'throw backs' only go back a couple hundred or a few thou
sand years at best. though her status as a 'throw back' scared her family at first, they still loved
her unconditionally. vera learned how to fly several years after her cousins since her avian form
takes much longer to mature and grow its flight feathers. at the age of twelve, vera finally lear
ned how to fly and in only a few weeks. vera had a happy childhood, but like all good things, it
came to an end. a rather abrupt and chaotic end.
when vera was only thirteen, hunters found her neighbors and killed each family without mercy.
her own family fled, taking off to the skies, but were each shot down. vera's parents were smart
and fled on foot with vera in tow, traveling to germany to try and escape. they were able to get
vera safely hidden away before the hunters found them and killed them like the rest of their fa
mily. vera stayed in the floorboards of a old shack for several days before getting the courage to
move. she mourned the loss of her family as well as the friends she had made with her neighbor
s, but had to flee once more when she catches wind of hunters being in the area. since her avia
n form is so large, vera kept to her human self while she traveled, taking planes and trains inste
ad of her own wings. for years she traveled alone, keeping away from large cities so she isn't fo
und by any hunters. at the age of twenty, vera started to feel an invisible tug towards the valley
that houses the hidden shifters and decided to check it out. she found the valley rather quickly
and joined the group that was surviving there, becoming an extra set of hands and wings around
the camp as well as being a carrier for supplies which gives her a little sense of belonging. she h
as grown rather fond of a few of the group members, but refuses to get too attached, she doesn
't want or need to get her heart broken anymore.
• personality •
vera is a pretty laid back girl, not really getting angry over little things. though she does have he
r pet-peeves, one of them being snoring. her hearing is quite strong so having someone snoring li
ke a lawnmower beside her is almost deafening. she tends to sleep in her avian form in a tree outside if the snoring doesn't stop. vera is okay wi
th most of the people in the group, only disliking those with personalities that are just too wild for her to handle. she enjoys silence and prefers
to sit alone by the river or in a tree rather than mingle with everyone. like every other female on the planet, vera can be moody at times and w
ill often go on flights if she's in one of her darker moods. though she doesn't ever like to fight, she can if needs to.
• shift info •
her avian form is extremely large in comparison to other birds, it's many times larger than the largest bird currently living. she has a wingspan of
about twenty-four feet and stands at nearly seven feet tall when fully erect. though vera weighs much more than other birds, nearly a hundred a
nd seventy pounds, it doesn't hinder her at all during flight since most of the mass is pure muscle used for flying. as expected, not much is known
about her avian form, scientists believe the argentavis magnificens is an ancestor to the current vultures and condors, which makes sense to vera
since her avian self can digest any kind of meat no matter how old and rotten as well as bones. her avain diet is greatly useful to the group since
she can clean up whatever is left over so wild animals don't get into their camp and destroy everything. vera also helps out with carrying things t
o and from camp, though she has a limit of only about eighty-five pounds which is half her avian body weight, but if she really needs to, and has
a steep enough drop to catch lift, vera could carry a hundred.
since there isn't any decent enough artwork to show how vera's avian form looks, i will be using a bearded vulture instead, but only for looks, her
avian form is still very large in comparison to the average person. vera's avian form is indeed formidable in appearance, but it's rather slow movi
ng and takes a lot of energy to use, which requires more food. luckily for her, vera can eat just about anything while in her avian form, including
carrion and bones. she can eat the same stuff in her human form as her avian self, but the taste is horrible and she has trouble keeping any of it down. with her large form, she prefers to drop from a high point and use the currents to lift herself up, but she can take off from the ground out
of necessity, it just drains her energy that much faster. she has a tree near camp that she can climb easily and is high enough to give her the spa
ce she needs to take off without much energy.
