Yeah, I think line breeding is fairly common in human bred horses, not sure about the wild though I'm certain it happens without any big issues. I know Pepper's pedigree has a bit of line breeding.

@Scout

Sorry to see you go! If you ever get some free time again and we're still around, feel more than free to rejoin!

@evixtus

It's alright! I think life's been busy for quite a few of us.

@suzycu

Making horses is an addiction I tell you. cx
On top of what Tauriel said, Riff and Cerberus' herds are kind of small and active, and Cerberus just lost a mare so he has about four mares.

Alex, Jimber, Nero, and Dante all have pretty small herds. Check the front page, it lists every mare/foal within those herds.

Yeah, they do. *thinks back when Alex was long tail and was like: "I GET ALL THE GIRLS"*

actually it is generally avoided with domestic horses and is common in wild horses as young fillies don't always leave the herd before their first heat, and colts can get to their sisters and mother etc. so quite common, but rarely happens twice as not long after it's done the colt or fully generally leaves or is taken from the herd. cx

I'll try and get a post up later.

Meh, from what I've seen in Quarter horses and Arabians line breeding seems common enough and is talked about enough how it's a useful breeding tool/tactic. Not used all the time of course and perhaps not most of the time, but seems to be a common enough occurrence. Of course, I'm no expert, I'm just going off what I've seen looking at various pedigrees of largely just two specific breeds, I don't ever look outside QH's and Arabians really.

I decided to drop by and read the new posts before I pass out ><

Thank you to everyone who gave me the stallion's names who have smaller herds :)

Inbreeding and line breeding is common is breeds were the risk is worth the possible reward. See mostly in Thoroughbreds, but also in many other common breeds, it is used a tool to either locate bad genes and remove them, or to reinforce the inheritance of good traits. The possibilities of good traits within the common breeds is seen as outweighing the risks because of the amount of horses in the breed, and the competitive need to have the best foals. Alternatively, inbreeding is used to make already tiny breeds smaller. Outside of these breeds, it isn't see as commonly. The horses can be perfectly fine, or they can come with a mess of issues. Generally, the foals have a tendency to be smaller in height and weaker. We actually had an accident within our little herd. Our gelding (He was a stud for about five years) Starkey bred his mother. Turns out the vet had messed up when gelding him...fun ><
Their foal seemed fine. Then, when she was only two, her stomach turned over one day. This killed her. She had no other health issues, other than being slightly more fragile than our other horses. We do not know for sure what happen, or the cause, but no other horses were affected.
Inbreeding can happen in the wild, although the horses are generally observed 'preventing' it. Along with the mares and stallions leaving when they come to age, other things get in their way. Mothers will thwart any advances from males, the lead will refuse her, and a couple other things I can't remember. Outside of the herd, if the ages are far enough apart, nothing can truly prevent siblings from mating. Although, the age difference would probably have to be a couple years for them to not recognize one another at all. If it does happen, it likely won't be a common occurrence :)

I've been reading up on this stuff since joining, and for a HARP group I'm in, so I figured I might as well be a butt and talk about it. (Plus I get to mention one of my lil babies ^^)

Have a nice night folks!
Horses are my special interest and I have been working since I joined to collect them all. Can you help me? Currently at 960/~1900

If I make a draft mare...would it be like worth it? Would any stallion let her in? Or should I make her after Winter?

@silent wish

He has. I just need time to do the layout for him, but now, my exams are coming, so I won't be online for as long as before. I'll finish his post asap.

@Laurara @Scarlit

Wait, if Scout is quitting, and his mare Ava is in Nero's herd(Nero is my horse), then Ava won't be counted into the herd anymore? Because Nero covered her already and she interacted with Amina's foals.

generally the player roleplays the final scene of their character of they are leaving. ie killing their character in the last post, but if unable usually the person last to interact with them plays out the characters death.
