History- Tanja had a very hard time growing up on the account of her mom's disappearance when she was only 10 years old, leaving her alone with her father and two younger sisters-ages 6 and 2. Though her dad struggled to provide for his daughters on his own, he managed to take care of his family for four years, but on the fifth anniversary of his wife's disappearance he, too, went missing. Tanja was left alone to care for her younger sisters for three weeks until the power was cut off in the height of the Texan summer: from there, they were forced to seek out their grandmother who called the authorities after hearing that the girls' father hadn't come home for nearly a month. Custody of Tanja and her sisters was awarded to their grandmother, but the home was far from warm. They were fed and clothed but hugs and "I love you"s were no where to be found.
When Tanja turned 18, she fought for the custody of her sisters-now aged 14 and 10-and won. She raised her younger sisters as she was attending college to become a fine arts teacher, and as soon as she got her degree she searched high and low for a position in a school. She taught at the same high school where her middle sister had graduated and where her youngest sister was still attending. After 10 years of working there, her debt was forgiven and she was able to take in a deep breath and breathe for the first time since she was 18. Within those ten years, she had put her sisters through college, they were both out of the house and holding down steady jobs, so what was she to do with her life now? Bored with her monotonous job of teaching ninth graders how to appreciate art, Tanja looked for out-of state jobs and found Saint George's where she secured a job where she could teach her students how to create art rather than look at it.
