backstory, not much of sootflower's life can be described as abnormal. both of her parents died when she was an apprentice, she was highly upset overall but she eventually was forced got over it. she's been fighting a bout of depression due to the very recent death of her brother, barkheart. he was brutally killed by a fox while the two were hunting by themselves. sootflower had managed to chase the fox off, but not before it had severely injured barkheart and herself. he later died in the midist of being dragged back to camp, sootflower had managed to survive, but it left her with a very slight limp in her right front leg due to her shoulder. to this day, she still holds herself accountable for his death, and so does her brother shadefeather. the two of them as of right now really just don't like each other, and most of the time when they're put together for anything shadefeather expresses his disgust for his littermate, but sootflower doesn't retaliate.

backstory, unlike sootflower, shadefeather was always the oddball in their family. he didn't understand why, but his parents didn't really show affection to him like they did to sootflower or barkheart. but his bond with barkheart was strong, these were two brothers that nothing could ever come between, not even sootflower herself. both of his parents died when he was an apprentice, but strangely he didn't mourn over them like his siblings did, which caused even more animosity between him and sootflower. this was about the time that barkheart started spending little more time with sootflower and less often with shadefeather. however, the breaking point was at barkheart's death. shadefeather mourned over the death of his beloved brother, and that's when his immense hatred for his sister stared becoming even more obvious. to this day, he still blames her for barkheart's death and will openly admit his animosity for her.
