To endure is to triumph. I am well aware
of the other, so-called virtues out there but,
for me, survival is the greatest priority. I am
a prey animal, after all. I'm personally
unconcerned with whatever deeper
qualities may exist. Love, bravery and
loyalty might be noble emotions, but they
aren't going to keep a horse alive. It is fear
that prolongs one's existence, and it is
aggression that places one above others.
I'm pleased to say that I possess both of
those qualities, particularly the latter. You
can disagree with my opinion if you like,
but you'll probably regret it.

Lechosław was the offspring of a Konik mare and a Mustang stallion. He was born and raised as a wild horse, his only home a medium-sized herd and the land upon which they travelled. Lech's sire never paid much attention to him, which was nothing unusual. The relationship between the colt and his sire was chilly, at best; the older stallion viewed Lech as nothing more than a threat. Lech was far closer to his dam, a gentle, kindly Konik who gave her colt his Polish name. The grulla colt was driven out of his birth herd by his sire when he turned two years of age. Lech initially missed his dam and his playmates, but told himself to toughen up and be a stallion. Caring stallions did not survive in the real world.┏

The first years of Lechosław's adult life were nothing exceptional. He occasionally claimed a mare or two, but they would inevitably be stolen from him by an older, more canny stallion. A few even managed to escape from Lech of their own accord. Unsurprisingly, Lech spent much of his first years of adulthood in bachelor bands. He learned much about life in general from the other stallions. This knowledge certainly paid off. When Lech reached his seventh year, he battled against a younger stallion for possession of his small herd. Lech won and defended his mares against rival stallions. He left the mares' hierarchy alone and they accepted him, allowing him to mate with them when they came into heat. Lech managed to keep that herd for almost two years, until one fateful autumn day.
The morning of that day was laced with drizzle and a mist so thick that Lechosław could barely see the horses who walked on in front of him. The herd was milling about, disoriented by the bad weather. The lead mare, a wise old Mustang, tried her hardest to drag the herd onwards, but to no avail. Lech was mentally cursing the late autumn fog when it happened. A drove of humans on horseback burst out from the mist, sending the horses into mayhem. Had Lech been human, he might have compared the riders to the horsemen of the apocalypse, for they spelt the end for his herd. Lech, along with most of his mares and foals, was captured by the humans. The stallion was trapped in captivity for several months. As winter passed, the humans managed to train the many of the mares to carry them on their backs, but Lech was fiercely opposed to suffering such humiliation. One evening in late winter, a young farmhand did not shut the door of Lech's stable properly, preoccupied as he was by avoiding the stallion's flailing hooves. That night, Lech took the opportunity to escape, bitterly aware that he was alone in the world once more.
