lance was a troubled boy growing up; his parents
didn't seem to care about him much, leaving him
by himself most of the time while they dealt wit
h 'grown-up stuff' they told him. they shut him o
ut, in a way, and whenever he tried to talk to th
em, most of the time they shushed him or interr
upted him or just flat-out said 'go away'. this mad
e him quiet, he tried never to disturb anyone, an
d held in all the emotions swirling inside him. th
ey never dulled, just hungered for something to f
eed on; a passion. he found one in fifth grade, wi
th mr. peverell, a kind teacher who seemed to e
njoy him as a student more than his parents as a s
on. he taught him about mythology. all types, sta
rting with greek, roman, egyptian, on and on and
on. he studied on his own after grade five, and th
e teacher visited him often, even now after highs
chool. the unfed emotions stirred and picked up t
he many mythologies easily, deciding never to let
go, even when some gods appeared in his town.

diagnosed with lung cancer and told

had about a year to live. living beyon
